The mid-market accounting stack in 2026: what 12 finance leaders are actually buying.

We surveyed 12 controllers and VPs of Finance at $50M-500M companies about what they're spending on, switching off, and waiting on. Here's the consolidated map...

→ Vendor deep dive: Numeric vs. FloQast vs. Trullion

Three close management platforms, one trial balance, four weeks of testing. The pricing math at the end is the part nobody else publishes.

→ Buy / build / wait: AI agents for AR

The category is moving fast. Here's the framework we're using for "should we adopt now or wait six months..."

What's inside

Four things in every issue.

Built around the actual decisions finance leaders are making: what to buy, what to skip, what to wait on, and what's about to change the math.

01

Vendor deep dives

Three vendors, one trial balance, four weeks of real testing. Side-by-side comparisons with pricing math, integration analysis, and the trade-offs nobody else publishes.

02

Stack architecture

How real teams structure their data flow. ERP to subledger to close to FP&A: the diagrams, the bottlenecks, and the integration choices that age well versus the ones that don't.

03

Buy / build / wait

The framework, applied to a real category. Should you adopt this AI agent now? Wait six months? Build internally? We'll work through the math out loud, every issue.

04

Industry shifts

The funding rounds, M&A, and platform moves that change the math. What just got acquired. What just raised. What's about to change pricing. With "what this means for your stack" attached.

Why I'm building Accounting Stack.

If you're a controller or VP of Finance evaluating tools right now, you've got two real options for research: vendor demos (with all the bias that comes with) and Gartner-style reports (with a 12-month delay and a six-figure paywall).

That's the gap. There's no neutral, current, finance-leader-written place to compare what's actually in your buying funnel. Forums are noisy. LinkedIn posts are sponsored content with hashtags. The good analysis exists in private group chats nobody outside finance leadership can access.

Accounting Stack is the attempt to bring that conversation into the open. Real vendor comparisons, real architecture decisions, real buy/build/wait math, and real intel on what's about to change the category. Twice a month. Free. Zero vendor influence in the editorial.

If you're making buying decisions in 2026, this is the inbox I want to be in for you.

Common questions

Questions before you sign up.

When does Accounting Stack actually launch?
We're targeting Q2 2026. Subscribers on the early list get Issue #1 the day it ships, plus a behind-the-scenes note on what categories we're researching next.
How is this different from Month-End Closers and Modern Accounting?
Closers is workflows for the people doing the close. Modern Accounting is the AI on-ramp for individual contributors. Accounting Stack is buying decisions for finance leadership: vendor comparisons, stack architecture, and the buy/build/wait math. Different audience, different depth, different content.
Are the vendor reviews actually independent?
Yes. Vendors don't see reviews before they ship. We don't accept money from vendors covered in vendor deep dives. Sponsorships exist (clearly marked, separate from editorial), but the vendor comparison content is paid for by Audit Friendly directly. If a vendor approaches us, we either decline or run their pitch publicly with our take attached.
What sized companies is this written for?
Primary focus is $50M-500M revenue companies: typically Series B through pre-IPO, or established mid-market. Some content applies up and down (especially stack architecture). We'll always note when a recommendation only makes sense at a specific size.
Can you cover specific vendors I'm evaluating?
Reply to any issue with the vendor names. I track requests and prioritize based on what's coming up most often. If we're already testing the category, I'll give you an early look before publication.
Is it really free?
Yes. No paywall, no premium tier. Eventually we may offer paid research reports (vendor RFP packets, custom comparisons) for finance teams who want deeper analysis. The newsletter itself stays free.
