You've probably heard there's an accountant shortage, and for once the panic headlines are actually backed by the numbers. The accounting and auditing workforce has shrunk by more than 17% since 2020, with over 300,000 people leaving the profession, and the people sitting for the CPA exam have dropped more than 30% since 2016. The AICPA isn't calling it a shortage anymore, they're calling it a pipeline crisis. So I wanted to see what that actually looks like in live hiring data - not the think-pieces, the real postings - and map exactly where the pain is landing.
We track more than 81,000 accounting and finance postings over the last 90 days at Audit Friendly - data current through June 2026 - so here's where the demand is actually concentrated, and what it means for you if you're the one with the skills.
Ranked by posting volume over the last 90 days:
Now layer the shortage on top of that list and it gets interesting, because the demand isn't spread evenly - it's piling up worst at two very different ends of the career ladder.
Look at the number two spot. Controller - a senior role that takes years to grow into - is the second most-posted job in the entire field, ahead of Senior Accountant. That's not normal. In most professions senior roles are rare because few people reach them, but here employers are posting them in huge numbers because the people who can run a close are retiring faster than they're being replaced. Nearly three-quarters of CPAs are at or near retirement age, and when a 30-year Controller walks out the door, that knowledge is genuinely hard to replace.
At the same time Staff Accountant demand dwarfs everything, because the entry pipeline that's supposed to backfill the whole profession has thinned out. Fewer accounting grads, fewer CPA candidates, same number of books that need closing. So employers are fighting over juniors and desperate for seniors at the same time, and the middle is where most working accountants are sitting comfortably with more leverage than they probably realize.
Payroll Specialist and Accounts Payable Specialist both crack the top seven, and nobody writes career-advice posts about them. That's exactly why they're worth knowing about. These are stable, every-company-needs-them roles with thousands of openings right now, and far less competition than the prestige track because everyone's chasing the same Big 4 audit seat. If you want demand and stability over a logo on your resume, that's where it quietly lives.
If you're already in accounting, this shortage is the best leverage you'll have in your career, so use it. The data says employers are short on exactly the people who can own a close, and if that's you, you're negotiating from a position most professions never get. Don't undersell that.
If you're early in or thinking about getting in, the pipeline crisis is your way in. The barrier that's scaring people off - the 150-credit-hour requirement, the exam grind - is the same barrier keeping demand sky-high for everyone who pushes through it. That's not a reason to bail, it's the whole reason the leverage exists.
And if you're an AI skeptic worried the robots are coming for these jobs, look at the actual postings. Employers are hiring humans for these roles in enormous numbers right now. The smart move isn't to fear the shortage or the AI, it's to be the accountant who can do the close AND use the tools - that person is going to name their price for the next decade.
Whatever bucket you're in, you can see live openings for any of these roles on our job board, and our salary insights show what each one pays before you make a move.
Yes, and it's well documented. The accounting workforce has shrunk over 17% since 2020 with more than 300,000 professionals leaving the field, and CPA exam candidates are down more than 30% since 2016. The AICPA describes it as a pipeline crisis driven by retirements, fewer graduates, and licensure barriers.
By posting volume in Audit Friendly's data as of June 2026, Staff Accountant leads with 6,804 postings over 90 days, followed by Controller (4,317) and Senior Accountant (4,036). Demand is sharpest at the entry level and the senior leadership level at the same time.
Controller is the second most-posted accounting role in our data because experienced accountants who can own the month-end close are retiring faster than they're being replaced. Nearly three-quarters of CPAs are at or near retirement age, creating acute demand for senior talent.
For people willing to enter or stay, the shortage is leverage. High demand and a thin pipeline mean strong negotiating power, especially for those who can run a close and use AI tools. The barriers keeping others out are the same ones keeping demand high.
