Payroll should be one of the easiest accounting jobs to do from a kitchen table, because the work already lives in software - ADP, Workday, UKG - and the deadlines land the same whether you hit them from an office or your couch. So I went into our postings data expecting remote payroll to be everywhere, and the numbers caught me off guard: of the 2,614 payroll postings live on the Audit Friendly job board as of August 2026, only 239 are remote. That's about 1 in 11, which makes payroll one of the least remote-friendly corners of the profession we track, and I think that's a damn shame, because the remote ones pay better.
Around 9% of live payroll postings in our data are fully remote, and another 375 (about 14%) are hybrid, so the honest picture is that three out of four payroll jobs still expect you in a building most of the week. And the pattern gets sharper when you slice by level: payroll specialists sit at roughly 10% remote (157 of 1,597 postings), payroll managers at 11%, directors at 12%, while payroll administrators and coordinators - the entry rungs - drop under 5%. Seniority buys flexibility here, same as we found across the rest of the profession in our piece on whether remote accounting jobs pay less. The junior payroll seats are where employers still want a body in a chair, which is frustrating if you're early-career and hunting remote, and I get why - payroll touches paper checks, garnishment mail, badge systems, all the physical shit nobody puts in the job ad.
Better than the field, in our data. Across the 110 remote payroll postings that publish an annual range, the median advertised midpoint is $81,250, against $77,285 for all payroll postings with a range. For context, payroll specialist postings overall carry a median midpoint of $67,750 and payroll manager postings sit at $107,500, so the remote premium is partly a mix effect - remote skews senior, and senior pays more - but even accounting for that, remote payroll is clearly a step up from the government's picture of the occupation. BLS wage data via O*NET puts the median for payroll and timekeeping clerks at $47,070 as of May 2024, and the gap between that number and what our board shows tells you the remote-friendly end of this market is a different job than the clerk role the statistics describe. One more honest note: a chunk of payroll postings quote hourly rates instead of salaries, and those annualize to a median closer to $58K, so the floor is real too.
Multi-state complexity, mostly. 106 of the 239 remote postings - 44% - explicitly mention multi-state payroll, which makes sense once you think about who hires remote payroll people: companies with employees scattered across the country, dealing with a different tax registration in every damn state. The complexity that makes the job hard is the same complexity that makes it remote, because a distributed workforce is exactly what creates the need. Certification shows up too - 74 of the remote postings (31%) mention the CPP, the Certified Payroll Professional credential from PayrollOrg - and that's a much higher hit rate than we see for most certifications in most roles. On systems, ADP leads the remote postings at 73 mentions, Workday close behind at 68, then UKG (29), Dayforce (28), and Paylocity (20). And here's a wrinkle I enjoyed: some of the most active remote payroll employers in our data are payroll companies themselves - Dayforce hiring remote payroll people to run payroll for Dayforce customers, HCM consultancies staffing up implementation teams. The industry eating its own cooking.
Partly habit, partly the physical residue I mentioned - checks, garnishments, onboarding paperwork - and partly trust, because payroll errors are the one accounting mistake every single employee notices immediately. I hold two things at once here: the operational case for remote payroll is airtight, the work is systems work, AND employers are rational to be cautious with the function where one bad Friday torches company-wide goodwill. Both are true. What tips it over time, I think, is the multi-state reality - once your workforce is distributed, insisting your payroll person sit in headquarters is a policy running on inertia, and inertia loses eventually. We're already seeing hybrid (14%) outrun fully remote (9%) as the compromise position, which mirrors hybrid quietly becoming the default across accounting hiring.
If you're in payroll and want remote, get loud about multi-state experience - it's the single most common requirement in the remote postings and most payroll people undersell it on the resume. Sit the CPP if you've got the experience hours, because a credential mentioned in a third of remote postings is a screening signal worth owning. Learn one of the big systems deeply rather than five shallowly, and if you get to pick, our data says ADP or Workday give you the most doors. And bluntly: if you're an administrator or coordinator, the fastest route to remote is a level up, because the flexibility lives at specialist and above. Browse what's live on our work-from-home accounting jobs page - every listing links straight to the employer's career page, no recruiter maze - and if you're weighing whether the machines are coming for this role, read our take on what AI should and shouldn't touch in payroll, because the answer shapes which payroll skills stay valuable.
Harder than most accounting roles. About 9% of the payroll postings we track at Audit Friendly are fully remote - 239 of 2,614 as of August 2026 - versus another 14% hybrid, so remote payroll roles exist but you're fishing in a small pond and competition per posting runs high.
The median advertised midpoint across remote payroll postings with published ranges is $81,250 in Audit Friendly's data, above the $77,285 median for payroll postings overall. Payroll managers advertise around $107,500 at the midpoint, specialists around $67,750.
Audit Friendly's data says it helps: 31% of remote payroll postings mention the CPP, one of the highest certification hit rates we see for any role. It reads as a trust signal for employers hiring someone they'll rarely see in person.
ADP and Workday lead the remote postings in our data, followed by UKG, Dayforce, and Paylocity. Deep skill in one major platform beats surface familiarity with several.
Some - 25 of the 239 remote payroll postings on our Audit Friendly board are Canadian, with the rest overwhelmingly US-based. Canadian remote payroll exists but it's a thin market, so set up alerts rather than refreshing listings.
Payroll people run the most unforgiving deadline in the building fifty-two times a year, and the market is slowly conceding they can do it from anywhere. Get the multi-state reps, get the credential, and go take one of those 239 seats - somebody's going to.
