Workday Adaptive Planning, renamed Adaptive from Workday in September 2026, is cloud budgeting, forecasting, workforce planning and consolidation software for mid-size and large finance teams, with native connectors for NetSuite, Sage Intacct and Workday.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
Standard, modeled and cube sheets support driver-based expense plans, top-down and bottom-up budgets, and rolling and zero-based forecasts, per the budgeting and scenario pages checked 30 September 2026. Workday markets unlimited what-if scenarios, but its limits reference (updated 13 March 2026) caps each user at 15 scenarios across versions and each instance at 5,000. Workforce, sales and operational plans share the model, and Close & Consolidation adds eliminations and currency translation. OfficeConnect covers Excel, PowerPoint and Word, and Workday says Google Workspace write-back became generally available in 2026.
Workday's G-Cloud 14 listing (checked 30 September 2026) cites ISO 27001, SOC 1, SOC 2, ISO 27017, 27018 and 27701 for the service, and the pricing page includes an audit trail plus a production and a non-production instance. Access rules, configurable approval workflows and the consolidation module's always-on audit trail cover plan governance, and an EU Sovereign cluster keeps data in Germany. The limits page keeps 12 months of audit trail data in the app and allows only 3 secured custom dimensions in access rules.
The limits reference (updated 13 March 2026) allows 120 billion intersections and 250 million facts per cube sheet, 1 million values per custom dimension and 100,000 levels. Workday's technology page cites a customer with 500 dimensions and one with 70,000 accounts. The ceilings that bite first are 10 custom dimensions per cube sheet, 1 million rows per modeled sheet and a 500,000-row export from Design Integrations.
Design Integrations lists native data sources for NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics GP and Workday HCM and Financials, plus Cloud Data Connect for Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric and Incorta (docs checked 30 September 2026). The Workday source can publish plans back to Workday, and NetSuite supports drill-through. QuickBooks Online, Xero, Business Central, SAP and Oracle have no named adapter and run through JDBC, spreadsheets, scripted sources or partners.
A first-party, Workday-hosted MCP server entered preview on 15 August 2026 with 7 read-only tools, and the 2026R2 release note sets production for 16 October 2026; an admin must register an OAuth client first. Planning Agent is metered at 8 Flex Credits per analysis request (rate card, 29 September 2026). Decision Intelligence went from early adopter on 27 May 2026 to generally available per Workday's 14 September 2026 blog.
Workday's support page lists 24/5 standard coverage with severity 1 cases handled 24/7/365, and full 24/7/365 only on paid Success Plans, while the Adaptive pricing page lists 24/7 support. The G-Cloud listing gives a 1-hour severity 1 response commitment. No independent review-site rating is cited here; the only customer quotes are ones Workday published.
Workday states an average deployment of 4.5 months, slower than Planful's stated 4-week average go-live and Vena's 8 to 12 weeks. Models are built with no-code sheets and the Data Designer, usually by Workday services or a certified partner. Sources without a native adapter need an On-Prem Data Connector or a JavaScript custom data source, which adds integration work.
The workday.com pricing page says Pricing varies for both packages and offers a 30-day free trial (checked 30 September 2026). Workday Limited does publish a UK G-Cloud price list per employee per year and a Flex Credits rate card, which is more than Anaplan, Planful or Vena show. US list prices and the dollar value of a Flex Credit are not published.

You are buying a finance-owned planning model on Workday's cloud: standard, modeled and cube sheets, driver-based budgets, rolling forecasts, headcount plans and an optional Close & Consolidation package. It has native data sources for NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics GP and Workday HCM and Financials, plus Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric and Incorta through Cloud Data Connect. Workday says more than 7,000 customers use it, and Workday reports being named a Leader in Gartner's 2025 Magic Quadrant for Financial Planning Software for the fourth year running.
The catch is price and paper. Commercial pricing is quote only, and the one price list Workday publishes, on the UK G-Cloud framework, charges per employee across the whole company on a 3-year term: £60.12 per employee per year at 1,000 to 1,500 employees, falling as headcount rises. The newer AI runs on Workday Flex Credits, with Planning Agent at 8 credits per analysis request, and Workday does not publish what a credit costs. The first-party MCP server is read-only and, on 30 September 2026, reached only preview environments; Workday's release note sets production for 16 October 2026, a date it has already revised once.
Before signing, get in writing: the pricing unit (employees, users or planners) and the renewal uplift cap; the Flex Credit allotment, overage rate and whether Decision Intelligence draws credits; whether you need a paid Success Plan for round-the-clock support, since Workday's support page says standard support is 24/5 with only severity 1 cases covered 24/7/365; how long you keep instance access after termination (the G-Cloud listing says up to 30 or 60 days, by contract); and how each of your source systems connects, since several common ERPs have no named adapter.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Driver-based and rolling forecasts pull actuals in on a schedule and recalculate in memory. Workday's 14 September 2026 blog says TX Group cut its rolling forecast cycle from 3 days to 4 hours; that is a vendor-published customer claim. Personal what-if scenarios let analysts test changes before sharing them.
The Workday data source pulls reports from a Workday tenant, and with Workday External Systems set up, plans can be published back to Workday and drilled into from Adaptive sheets. Hiring, transfer and retention plans carry driver-based cost assumptions. Other HR systems load through JDBC, spreadsheets or partners.
OfficeConnect links live Adaptive numbers into Excel, PowerPoint and Word, and Workday lists a cross-platform Mac and Windows version among its 2026 releases. Scheduled reports can burst to up to 250 users at a time, with 100 schedules per instance. Workday says Google Workspace reporting with write-back became generally available in 2026.
The Close & Consolidation package adds intercompany eliminations, currency translation, complex ownership rules and an always-on audit trail on the same model as the plan. Workday's documentation says the audit trail retains the last 12 months of data and user activity 30 days. If auditors need a longer record, schedule exports through the audits API before entries age out.
After an admin registers an OAuth client, Claude can list sheets, read definitions and formulas, and query dimensional or modeled data within the user's access rules. Every call lands in the audit log. Production availability is set for 16 October 2026.
Cube sheets allow 250 million facts and 10 custom dimensions each, with up to 1 million values per dimension. Workday cites a bakery manufacturer with 500 dimensions and a consulting firm with 70,000 accounts. Design the model around the 10-dimension cap per cube sheet.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
30-day access with a guided walkthrough of planning, reporting and dashboards.
Planning package, in Workday's wording: any ERP or GL, unlimited versions, what-if scenarios (15 per user per the limits reference), OfficeConnect, SSO, and a production and a non-production instance. The page lists 24/7 support, but Workday's support page says standard support is 24/5 with only severity 1 cases covered 24/7/365.
Planning plus close and consolidation: intercompany eliminations, currency translation and ownership rules on the same model.
Workday Limited's G-Cloud 14 list; 3-year term priced on full headcount; one production and one sandbox instance.
Same banding as Financial Planning, for headcount, compensation and skills plans.
Both planning products together; organizations of 1,000 to 1,500 employees pay the top rate.
Audit support for customers in highly regulated sectors, billed by the hour.
Annual bulk credit purchase for agents; complimentary allotment by company size; Planning Agent uses 8 credits per request.
Paid Accelerate Essentials, Accelerate and Accelerate Plus tiers add 24/7/365 support and guidance; Standard is included.
Listed as an add-on on the Adaptive pricing page.
Workday services or a partner; excluded from G-Cloud subscription fees. CFO Shortlist reports $50,000 to $300,000.
Workday Limited's G-Cloud 14 price list (document dated 23 June 2026, read 30 September 2026) charges per employee per year across the entire employee population on a 3-year term, and added employees cost extra per head. Commercial deals may use a different unit, since workday.com only says Pricing varies. Ask which unit your quote uses and what happens when headcount grows mid-term. Deployment, training and extra instances sit outside the subscription.
Workday's Flex Credits rate card (last updated 29 September 2026) lists Planning Agent data exploration at 8 credits per analysis request, and Core Platform API requests at 60 credits per 10,000 calls. Customers get a complimentary annual allotment sized to the company and buy more as usage grows. Decision Intelligence is not on the rate card, and the card does not say whether Adaptive API or MCP calls draw credits, so ask about both. Put the allotment, overage price and rate lock in the order form.
The 2026R2 release note (updated 4 September 2026) lists a preview date of 15 August 2026 and a production date of 16 October 2026, and documents 7 query-only tools. The configuration PDF lists only preview hostnames. Preview customers still on the older MSA must opt in to Workday's Universal Main Service Agreement. Writing data still needs the XML API or a person.
The Adaptive Planning limits reference (updated 13 March 2026) and Workday's audit trail reference (updated 14 June 2024) both say the audit trail retains the last 12 months of data, and user activity 30 days; printable audit reports stop at 50,000 rows. The pricing page's Unlimited audit trail line does not describe retention, so plan around the documented 12 months. SOX-bound teams should schedule exports through the audits API, which needs the Activity Auditing permission, before records age out.
Design Integrations names native data sources for NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics GP and Workday, plus Cloud Data Connect for Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric and Incorta (docs checked 30 September 2026). Other systems need JDBC through an On-Prem Data Connector installed behind your firewall, a JavaScript custom cloud data source, spreadsheet loads or a partner. Workday's claim that over 300 systems can connect does not say which are native.
The limits page caps each cube sheet at 10 custom dimensions, modeled sheets at 1 million rows and 200 columns, and access rules at 3 secured custom dimensions with 10,000 secured values each. Configurable workflows allow 15 definitions per instance and 15 scenarios per user. Test a complex enterprise design against these in the sandbox before sign-off.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: Yes. Workday's 2026R2 release notes document an Adaptive Planning MCP Server with a preview date of 15 August 2026 and a production date of 16 October 2026 (checked 30 September 2026), and the change log shows the production date has already been revised once. Until production, the configuration guide lists only preview hostnames, such as api-us.prvw.adaptiveplanning.com, for the US, Canada, Australia, Europe, India and Japan, and Workday's cluster reference says not every cluster has a preview environment. A search of the public MCP registry found no community or third-party Adaptive Planning server.
Scope: Read only. The 7 documented tools list sheets, read sheet definitions, run dimensional and modeled-sheet queries, search metadata by term or ID, and read account formulas. No tool writes data, changes versions or submits workflows. Each call follows the user's permissions and access rules and is recorded in the audit log.
Turnkey: No. An admin registers an OAuth client with the MCP-Basic scope in Adaptive (or a Workday API client for Workday-enabled tenants), and Workday's configuration PDF walks through PKCE token steps by hand. During preview, customers still on the older MSA must opt in to Workday's Universal Main Service Agreement. Writes still go through the XML API (v40), which can import data and create accounts, dimensions, levels and users.
Inside the product, Workday announced Adaptive Decision Intelligence on 27 May 2026 for early adopters and called it generally available on 14 September 2026; Workday says it answers plain-language questions, runs Monte Carlo ranges and commits a chosen scenario to the plan. Planning Agent costs 8 Flex Credits per analysis request on the 29 September 2026 rate card. Workday claims Planning Agent cut data exploration and analysis by 30 percent for early access customers, which no independent account confirms.
Who wins for whom: Teams running rolling and zero-based forecasts with workforce plans and OfficeConnect for Excel: Workday Adaptive Planning. Large enterprises planning all three statements across finance, workforce, sales and supply chain: Anaplan. Teams that want template budgeting and free-form models side by side with Workforce Pro: Planful.
Driver-based and rolling forecasts. Adaptive Planning runs driver-based, top-down and bottom-up budgets plus rolling and zero-based forecasts on standard, modeled and cube sheets, with workforce and sales plans in the same model and OfficeConnect for Excel.
Where it loses: Workday markets unlimited what-if scenarios, but its limits reference caps them at 15 per user and each cube sheet at 10 custom dimensions, so test complex designs in the sandbox.

Three statements in one model. Anaplan plans revenue, opex and capex across all three statements in its Integrated Financial Planning app, and the same platform carries workforce, consolidation, sales and supply chain models with scenario modeling and Forecaster ML forecasts.
Where it loses: Builds are mostly partner-led, Vendr says services often cost 50 to 150 percent of first-year subscription, and a workspace's Polaris or Classic engine cannot be changed later.

Two engines for budgets and scenarios. Planful pairs template and driver-based budgeting in Structured Planning with free-form multidimensional models in Dynamic Planning, adding rolling forecasts, scenarios, Workforce Pro headcount planning, cash flow forecasting and a Microsoft 365 add-in.
Where it loses: The two engines mean two modeling styles and two API families to learn, and CFO Shortlist reports input templates slow down beyond about 400 lines.

Who wins for whom: Workday, NetSuite or Sage Intacct customers that want native sources and NetSuite drill-through: Workday Adaptive Planning. Enterprises loading SAP, Salesforce and warehouse data through Data Orchestrator: Anaplan. Teams on Dynamics 365, Acumatica or QuickBooks that want a pre-built connector: Planful.
Native NetSuite, Intacct and Workday sources. Design Integrations lists native data sources for NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Salesforce, Dynamics GP and Workday HCM and Financials, plus Cloud Data Connect for Snowflake, Fabric and Incorta, with NetSuite drill-through and plan publishing back to Workday.
Where it loses: QuickBooks Online, Xero, Business Central, SAP and Oracle have no named adapter, so they connect through JDBC via an On-Prem Data Connector, scripted sources, spreadsheets or partners.

SAP and warehouse connectors built in. Anaplan's Data Orchestrator lists 14 import connectors, including SAP HANA, BW and ECC over OData v4, Salesforce, Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks and Oracle Database, with writeback pipelines to Snowflake, Databricks, Oracle and cloud storage.
Where it loses: There is no native NetSuite, Workday HCM or Sage Intacct connector, so those systems arrive through files, CloudWorks or an integration platform, and Data Orchestrator is sold in capacity packages.

Pre-built connectors across mid-market ERPs. Planful lists pre-built connectors for SAP S/4HANA and ECC, NetSuite, Oracle, Dynamics 365, QuickBooks, Acumatica and Sage Intacct, and its NetSuite connector pulls GL and transaction data on a schedule through SuiteAnalytics Connect and SuiteQL.
Where it loses: Xero is not listed, CFO Shortlist reports SAP integration is limited and needs a third-party iPaaS or custom API work, and a single data transfer over 40 MB returns an error.

Workday's rate card, last updated 29 September 2026, lists Planning Agent data exploration at 8 Flex Credits per analysis request; the dollar value of a credit is not published.
Workday renamed the product, said it had built a dedicated Adaptive business unit over the past year, and said Planning Hubs, Google Workspace, Slack and Teams integrations and Decision Intelligence are generally available.
Seven read-only tools for AI agents, with OAuth setup and audit logging; the release note sets production for 16 October 2026.
A natural-language workspace for questions, scenarios and Monte Carlo ranges that commits decisions to the governed plan; launched to an early adopter program.
Workday said it was named a Leader for the fourth consecutive year, citing Adaptive Planning customers including Spotify and Boston Scientific.
At Workday Rising, Workday introduced Flex Credits, a consumption model for its AI agents, and listed Planning Agent among agents already in early access, claiming a 30 percent cut in data exploration time for those customers (vendor-claimed).
Workday quotes it privately: workday.com shows Pricing varies for both the planning and the Close & Consolidation packages (checked 30 September 2026).
The only published list is Workday's UK G-Cloud 14 price list: £60.12 per employee per year for Financial Planning at 1,000 to 1,500 employees. The June 2026 copy also lists £53.53 for 900 to 1,000 employees, so a company of exactly 1,000 sits on the boundary: about £53,530 to £60,120 a year on a 3-year term (Audit Friendly estimate from the published rates). Adding Workforce Planning moves the rate to £90.17 at 1,000 to 1,500 employees. CFO Shortlist reports (24 September 2026) that mid-market teams of 200 to 500 users pay $80,000 to $300,000 a year, plus $50,000 to $300,000 of implementation.
Budget separately for Workday Flex Credits if the team will lean on Planning Agent, at 8 credits per analysis request.
Workday's published G-Cloud pricing assumes a 3-year term on Workday's own paper: a Master Subscription Agreement with security and data processing exhibits and order forms. The MCP preview requires customers on the older MSA to opt in to Workday's Universal Main Service Agreement.
On exit, Workday's G-Cloud listing says customers can export data and structure through export APIs, CSV, XLS, PDF and printable views, and can keep instance access for 30 or 60 days after the contract ends, depending on the contract. The exportData API returns 500,000 or 2 million rows per call depending on version and settings. Sheet definitions and account metadata export as XML through API methods such as exportSheetDefinition and exportAccounts; expect to rebuild the model logic in any new tool.
Workday states an average deployment time of 4.5 months, even for large companies. Workday Professional Services or a certified partner usually leads the build, with the FP&A team owning model design and data mapping.
NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Salesforce and Workday sources use native adapters. Sources without one need the On-Prem Data Connector or a JavaScript custom data source, which adds time. On the G-Cloud list, deployment and training are sold separately from the subscription.
Partly. Workday's Adaptive Planning MCP Server has been in preview since 15 August 2026, which means it runs against preview environments, not production tenants; production is set for 16 October 2026. Its 7 tools are read-only: list sheets, read definitions and formulas, search metadata, and query dimensional or modeled data.
An admin has to register an OAuth client with the MCP-Basic scope and point Claude at the regional endpoint. Every tool call respects the user's access rules and is written to the audit log. Writing plan data or running workflows still needs the XML API or a person in Adaptive.
