Zuora Review

Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.

The lowest-scoring dimension is the weak point. Read that one first.
Scalability
91
+

Zuora says Billing processes 400,000+ invoices an hour and that metering handles up to 3 billion usage events a day at a peak of 200,000 a second (vendor-claimed, billing page and 8 October 2025 release). The developer site publishes API limits of 50,000 requests a minute and 27 million a day per production tenant (checked 11 October 2026). Multi-entity support, multiple currencies and account hierarchies are listed on the platform and billing pages, and named customers include Zoom and Box.

Order-to-cash coverage
89
+

The product list covers quoting (Zuora CPQ), subscription, usage and hybrid billing, payment orchestration, collections with cash application and revenue recognition through the separate Zuora Revenue product (zuora.com, checked 11 October 2026). E-invoicing and tax run through pre-built Sovos and Avalara connectors or the native tax engine. Credit applications, credit scoring and deductions management are not in the product list.

Compliance depth
86
+

The zuora.com security page names PCI DSS, HIPAA and SOC 1, 2 and 3, and the legal page links a 2026 ISO 27001, 27018 and 27701 certificate and shows a SOC 2 Type II seal (checked 11 October 2026). Zuora announced ISO/IEC 42001 certification for AI management on 4 May 2026. The platform has an audit trail, OneID single sign-on and separate North America, Europe and Asia Pacific production clouds on its status page. Points come off because the zuora.com security and legal pages give no SOC 1 report type, report period or PCI level, so a buyer has to request the reports.

AI / agent readiness
84
+

Zuora ships a first-party MCP server with remote and local installs; AI tools are read-only by default and a OneID admin can enable write access (developer.zuora.com, checked 11 October 2026). The 16 April 2026 release opened Zuora AI to all customers with agents for contract changes, ASC 606 allocation comparisons, collections and audit requests. Milo and the agent skills are new, the skills carry a use-at-your-own-risk notice, and outcome figures are the vendor's own.

Integrations & data flow
80
+

The Integration Hub page lists pre-built connectors for NetSuite, Salesforce, Workday Financials, HubSpot, SAP and Snowflake, and the billing page cites 40+ payment gateways (checked 11 October 2026). The Workday connector was described as certified on 27 August 2025, feeding the Workday general ledger through Accounting Center. The REST API has SDKs in Java, Node.js, Python and C#. Sage Intacct, QuickBooks and Xero are not on the connector list.

Support
66
+

The security page describes follow-the-sun operations and support, and Zuora sells Technical Account Managers and Managed Services as add-on service offerings (zuora.com, checked 11 October 2026). The MSA points to service level agreements kept in the Knowledge Center, and no plan names or response times appear on the public marketing pages. Vendr says premium support tiers add 10 to 20 percent to annual platform fees (reported).

Implementation
52
+

Zuora's 28 July 2026 release says billing and revenue systems often take more than six months and a dedicated team to go live. Catalog, price book, open subscriptions, gateway tokens, CRM and ERP mappings all have to move. Milo, announced the same day, drafts configuration and migration from contracts and invoices, and the 'weeks' and '80 percent fewer resources' figures are the vendor's claims from early customer testing. Sandboxes and built-in deployment tools exist.

Pricing transparency
35
+

There is no price list: zuora.com/pricing redirects to a product page (checked 11 October 2026). The only public anchor is Vendr's median of $170,000 a year across 149 purchases (reported). The public MSA lets Zuora change renewal fees on 30 days notice and requires 90 days notice to stop an auto-renewal, and Vendr reports 5 to 12 percent standard renewal increases.

The verdict

Broad and proven at enterprise volume; quote only, slow to implement and priced for large contracts.

Written by the Audit Friendly research team. No vendor edits, no sponsored placement.

Zuora is a billing system of record for companies whose contracts are too complicated for a mid-market tool. Zuora Billing handles recurring, usage, milestone and one-time charges on one account, with a product catalog, account hierarchies and multi-currency invoicing. Around it sit Zuora CPQ on Salesforce, payment orchestration across 40+ gateways, Zuora Collections with cash application, and metering that the vendor says handles up to 3 billion usage events a day. Zuora Revenue covers ASC 606 and IFRS 15 and is a separate product with its own review.

The catch is cost and effort. Zuora publishes no prices, and Vendr reports a median contract of $170,000 a year across 149 purchases (reported, checked 11 October 2026). Zuora's own 28 July 2026 release says billing and revenue systems often take more than six months and a dedicated team to go live. Its answer is Milo, an implementation agent announced that day, and the savings figure attached to it comes from early customer testing. Native ERP connectors are listed for NetSuite, SAP and Workday; Sage Intacct, QuickBooks and Xero are absent from the Integration Hub page.

Before signing, get four things in writing. First, a line-item Order Form that prices each product, the volume entitlements and the overage path, because the public MSA treats use above entitlements as a breach if it is not cured in 30 days. Second, a renewal cap: the MSA lets Zuora change renewal fees on 30 days notice, and non-renewal needs 90 days notice. Third, a data export window after termination, which the MSA text does not state. Fourth, the current SOC 1 Type 2 report, the PCI attestation and the support plan with its response times.

Best for
  • A subscription or usage business with enterprise contracts, ramps and mid-term amendments that has outgrown a mid-market billing tool.
  • A multi-entity company on NetSuite, SAP or Workday that wants billing, collections and subledger data from one vendor.
  • An AI or consumption-priced product that needs metering, prepaid credits, commitments and revenue recognition tied together.
Not for
  • A company that wants a published price and a self-serve start this month.
  • A finance team on QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage Intacct that expects a listed native connector.
  • A distributor that needs credit applications, credit scoring or deductions management.
What it solves for finance

The jobs a finance team actually hires Zuora for

Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.

Billing

Bill recurring, usage and one-time charges on one account

Zuora Billing combines subscription, consumption, milestone and one-time charges with account hierarchies and multi-currency invoicing. Pricing changes mid-cycle flow to invoices without a separate system. The billing page puts volume at 400,000+ invoices an hour (vendor-claimed, checked 11 October 2026).

Usage

Meter and rate high-volume usage for AI and consumption pricing

The mediation engine ingests raw events, turns them into billable metrics and rates them against prepaid credits, commitments, tiers and overages. Zuora announced the 3 billion a day figure on 8 October 2025 and added flexible commitments and metered entitlements on 4 June 2026. Togai, the metering company Zuora agreed to buy on 30 April 2024, was announced as joining this suite.

Quoting

Quote ramps and amendments in Salesforce and pass them to billing

Zuora CPQ quotes new deals, upsells, renewals and multi-year ramps inside Salesforce and sends the order to Zuora Billing. Connectors also exist for Salesforce CPQ and HubSpot CPQ. The ConstructConnect figure comes from Zuora's billing page (checked 11 October 2026).

Payments

Route and retry payments across gateways

Zuora Payments sits above the gateways: it routes transactions, screens for fraud and retries failed charges. The vendor claims retries recover up to 20 percent more subscription revenue on one page and up to 50 percent more failed payments on another. Processing fees stay with the gateway.

Collections

Run collections and cash application next to billing data

Zuora Collections, introduced 20 May 2025, scores accounts, automates outreach and gives collectors a dashboard; the product page now adds cash application that matches payments to invoices. It reached Europe on 12 March 2026 with a data center in Germany. Deductions management is not listed.

AI agents

Let an AI agent query and change billing data under tenant controls

The Zuora MCP server lets Claude, Cursor or Codex query objects, run reports, preview billing and, once write access is on, create catalog items and subscriptions. Actions run under the signed-in user's roles and land in the audit trail (developer.zuora.com, checked 11 October 2026).

Annual subscription priced by quote. Vendr reports a $170,000 median across 149 purchases and says monthly subscription, invoice or transaction volume is the main driver (reported). Billing, Revenue, Collections, CPQ and Payments are separate products.

Implementation and professional services
20 to 40% of annual fees (Vendr)

Vendr's guidance for a mid-complexity implementation; its FAQ says complex deployments can reach 50 to 75 percent of annual platform fees (reported, checked 11 October 2026). Professional services are ordered on a statement of work under the MSA.

Premium support
10 to 20% of annual fees (Vendr)

Vendr says premium support tiers add this much to annual platform fees (reported). Zuora also sells Technical Account Managers and Managed Services.

Late payment interest

Things to watch for
01
Pricing
No price list, and the public benchmark is wide

Zuora has no pricing page; zuora.com/pricing redirects to a product page (checked 11 October 2026). Vendr reports a median of $170,000 a year from 149 purchases, a low of $26,883 and a high of $696,804 (reported, page updated February 2026). Vendr does not label the low and high as percentiles or extremes. Services and premium support are extra, which Vendr puts at 20 to 40 percent and 10 to 20 percent of annual fees.

01
Contract
Renewal terms favor the vendor unless negotiated

The public MSA (U.S., rev May 2025, read 11 October 2026) renews each Order Form automatically unless either party gives 90 days written notice. Zuora may modify fees for the renewal term by notifying the customer 30 days before the term ends, and the customer then has until 20 days before term end to decline. Use above the entitlements on the Order Form must be cured within 30 days of notice by buying more or upgrading, or it counts as a material breach. Ask for a renewal cap and an overage rate card.

01
Implementation
Implementation is measured in months

Zuora's 28 July 2026 release says billing and revenue systems are among the most complex enterprise implementations, often taking more than six months and a dedicated team. Milo, announced that day, is meant to shorten this, and the 'up to 80 percent fewer resources' figure is footnoted as based on early customer testing. The Fullsteam case study describes faster data migration with Milo and gives no go-live duration. Ask for a reference customer of similar size that went live after July 2026.

01
Coverage
Revenue recognition, credit and deductions sit outside Zuora Billing

ASC 606 and IFRS 15 schedules come from Zuora Revenue, a separate product on the Order Form. Zuora's product list (Billing, Revenue, Payments, Collections, CPQ and AI Paywalls, checked 11 October 2026) has no credit application, credit scoring or deductions product. E-invoicing and tax rely on pre-built Sovos and Avalara connectors or Zuora's native tax engine, so those partner contracts may be separate.

01
Integration
Listed ERP connectors skew enterprise

The Integration Hub page lists pre-built connectors for NetSuite, Salesforce, Workday Financials, HubSpot, SAP and Snowflake (checked 11 October 2026). Sage Intacct, QuickBooks and Xero do not appear there. A finance team on one of those ledgers should plan for the REST API, middleware or a partner build, and should ask what journal grain posts to the general ledger.

01
AI
MCP writes execute immediately once enabled

The zuora-mcp package notes for version 1.0.0 (22 May 2026) say the approval process was removed and all operations execute immediately. Zuora's developer site says tenants are read-only for AI tools until a OneID administrator enables read-write access, and that its agent skills are provided on a use-at-your-own-risk basis and must be tested in a sandbox (checked 11 October 2026). Give agents a low-privilege user and keep write access off in production until controls are agreed.

How Claude & agents work with it

Agent readiness

Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.

First-party Zuora MCP, remote or local, read-only by default and write-enabled per tenant by a OneID admin; public REST API with four SDKs.
Chargebee
Stripe Billing

Exists: Yes. Zuora ships a first-party MCP server. The developer site links a remote MCP server installation guide and a local one, and the zuora-mcp package on npm (version 1.1.0, published 24 June 2026 from a zuora.com maintainer account) lists production endpoints such as https://na.zuora.com/mcp. Zuora's 16 April 2026 release says Zuora AI, which includes Zuora MCP, is available to all customers. Zuora has no entry in the official MCP registry (searched 11 October 2026).

Scope: Read and write. The developer site says tenants restrict AI tools to read-only access by default and that a OneID administrator must enable read-write access. The npm changelog names tools for object queries, product and rate plan creation, subscription create, renew and cancel, account summaries, billing previews, billing documents, reports, workflows and Zuora Revenue reports. Access is limited to the signed-in user's roles, and AI-initiated changes are written to the standard audit trail under that user.

Turnkey: Admin-configured. An administrator reviews AI enablement for the tenant and creates OAuth client credentials for the MCP client; write access is a separate switch. Since version 1.0.0 (22 May 2026) the package has no approval step, so permitted operations execute immediately, and the tool list is discovered from the tenant's permissions. Zuora's published agent skills carry a use-at-your-own-risk notice and an instruction to test in a sandbox first.

In-product AI: Zuora AI, announced 16 April 2026, adds a chat prompt, account summaries and agents that explain contract modifications, compare ASC 606 allocations side by side, prioritize collections accounts and draft follow-ups, and assemble audit responses. Milo, announced 28 July 2026, builds a draft configuration and migration from contracts and invoices; according to Zuora it cuts implementation resources by up to 80 percent, a figure footnoted as based on early customer testing. Zuora announced ISO/IEC 42001 certification on 4 May 2026.

Claude can
With the Zuora MCP connected and tenant AI access on, Claude can query accounts, subscriptions, invoices and payments, run reports and preview billing. With write access enabled it can create catalog items and create, renew or cancel subscriptions within the user's role.
Claude can't
Claude cannot go beyond the connected user's Zuora roles, and cannot change anything until a OneID admin enables read-write AI access. Tools are discovered per tenant, so confirm the live list in a sandbox before planning payment or revenue close work around it.

Zuora FAQ

What does Zuora cost for an enterprise subscription business?
−

Zuora does not publish prices. Vendr's marketplace page reports a median contract of $170,000 a year across 149 purchases, with a low of $26,883 and a high of $696,804 (reported, page last updated February 2026, checked 11 October 2026). Vendr says the number of subscriptions, invoices or revenue transactions processed each month is the main pricing driver.

Budget services on top. Vendr suggests 20 to 40 percent of annual platform fees for a mid-complexity implementation and 10 to 20 percent for premium support (reported). Zuora Revenue, Collections, CPQ and Payments are separate products, and gateway processing fees are paid to the gateway.

What are the contract terms, and how do you get your data out?
+

The public MSA (U.S., rev May 2025) sets the term on the Order Form and renews it automatically unless either party gives 90 days written notice. Fees are invoiced annually in advance and due in 30 days, with late interest of 1.5 percent a month. Zuora may change renewal fees on 30 days notice. A customer that terminates for Zuora's uncured breach gets a pro rata refund of unused prepaid fees.

Customer Data stays the customer's property. Data comes out through the REST API, the Data Query SQL API, reports and the Snowflake connector. Zuora's API policy says deleted data can be retrieved for 30 days. The MSA text states no post-termination export window, so write one into the Order Form and pull invoices, usage and payment history before the term ends.

How long does implementation take, and who does it?
+

Plan for months. Zuora's 28 July 2026 release says billing and revenue systems often take more than six months and a dedicated team to go live. Zuora Professional Services or a systems integrator partner does the build, working with the customer's billing, revenue accounting, Salesforce and integration staff.

Milo, an implementation agent announced on 28 July 2026 and offered for every Zuora deployment, drafts the catalog, tenant configuration and data migration from contracts and invoices. The vendor claims go-live in weeks with up to 80 percent fewer resources, based on early customer testing. Vendr suggests budgeting 20 to 40 percent of annual platform fees for a mid-complexity implementation (reported).

Can Claude or another AI agent operate Zuora?
+

Yes, within limits a tenant admin sets. Zuora ships a first-party MCP server with remote and local installs for Claude, Cursor, Codex and other MCP clients. AI tools are read-only by default; a OneID administrator can enable read-write access. Named tools cover object queries, reports, billing previews, billing documents, workflows, catalog creation and subscription create, renew and cancel (developer.zuora.com and the zuora-mcp package, checked 11 October 2026).

Every action runs under the signed-in user's roles and is recorded in the audit trail. From version 1.0.0 of the package there is no approval step, so permitted writes execute immediately. Start in a sandbox with a low-privilege user.

Zuora sells by quote, so ask sales for a draft Order Form that prices Billing, Revenue, Collections, CPQ and Payments on separate lines with the volume entitlements and overage rates. Ask for a renewal cap, a post-termination export window, the support plan with response times and a reference customer that went live with Milo.
