The typical accounting job posting advertises a salary range about $20,000 wide, which works out to roughly 22% of the midpoint. We measured that across 32,617 postings carrying a real disclosed range in Audit Friendly's data, current through July 2026, and the spread swings hard depending on who posted it - a tax manager ad runs 40% of midpoint, a staff accountant ad runs 18% - and the widest ranges usually start at a lower floor than the tight ones, which is the part nobody warns you about.

I got curious because every pay conversation in accounting starts with a range somebody read off a job ad, and almost nobody stops to ask how much information is actually sitting inside that number. Sometimes it's a real offer band. Sometimes it's a shrug with two dollar signs on it.

The typical band is $20,000, or 22% of the midpoint

Across all 32,617 postings with a disclosed range in our salary data, the median band is $20,000, or 22.2% of the midpoint. About 21.7% of postings run a band 40% of midpoint or wider, and 13.3% run tighter than 10%, which is close to a fixed number with a rounding allowance stapled on.

Climbing the ladder buys you dollars, not much percentage

The dollar spread grows a lot on the way up - accounting clerk $6,240 (14.0% of midpoint, n=426), staff accountant $10,586 (18.2%, n=2,762), senior accountant $18,000 (19.9%, n=1,819), accounting manager $20,000 (20.0%, n=1,275), controller $25,900 (21.6%, n=1,513), director of accounting $31,000 (21.5%, n=360), CFO $41,500 (22.2%, n=452). As a share of pay though it barely budges, and that surprised me.

A CFO ad with a $41,500 spread sounds like a lot of room until you notice it's the same 22% slice of a much bigger number, and the percentage is what you're actually negotiating inside of. The medians underneath all this live in our salary insights tool.

Tax and public accounting post ranges roughly twice as wide

This is where it stops being a smooth ladder. Tax manager postings run a median band of 40.0% of midpoint ($49,200 across 1,068 postings), tax senior manager 50.0% ($85,800, n=364), tax partner 53.8% (n=63). Audit is right there, with audit manager at 36.0% (n=307) and audit senior 37.7% (n=116).

Compare that to a controller, who gets paid about the same as a tax manager - median midpoint $132,573 versus $140,000 - and gets a 21.6% band instead of a 40% one. Same money, double the fog. By industry it holds too: public accounting posts a 40.0% median band (n=2,204) and consulting 38.3%, while real estate posts 16.2% and staffing agencies 18.2%.

Half of all tax manager postings (51.2%) carry a band 40% or wider, against 15.0% for controllers and 9.8% for staff accountants. So on the tax and audit track you're reading much vaguer ads than your corporate friends are, and the number on the screen is a conversation starter rather than a plan.

The wide postings start lower

This next one surprised the hell out of me. Within the same role, postings with a very wide band (40% of midpoint or more) advertise a lower floor than postings with a tight band (under 20%), and a much higher ceiling.

RoleWide postings (band 40%+)Tight postings (under 20%)
Controller$100,000 - $165,000 (n=227)$125,000 - $140,000 (n=700)
Tax manager$103,600 - $191,000 (n=547)$120,000 - $130,000 (n=232)
Accounting manager$96,000 - $160,000 (n=209)$101,301 - $120,000 (n=620)
Senior accountant$70,000 - $117,650 (n=223)$80,000 - $90,000 (n=911)
Staff accountant$52,350 - $85,000 (n=271)$62,892 - $70,000 (n=1,556)

A wide band mostly means the employer hasn't decided what level they're hiring, so they've posted two jobs in one ad and they'll price you once they've met you. That controller ad spanning $100k to $165k is fishing for an assistant controller who'll take $105k and a real controller they'd stretch for, and if you walk in mid-level you land nearer the bottom than the middle. The tight $125k-$140k ad is a band somebody actually approved, so it's a lower ceiling and a much safer floor. Both are fine, they just deserve different homework, and treating the top of a wide range as your number is how people end up damn disappointed at offer stage.

Some postings skip the range entirely

About 1.9% of postings (611 of 32,617) list one number with no range at all, and they cluster where you'd guess - accounting intern 9.3% (n=204), accounting clerk 8.7% (n=426), tax intern 6.6% (n=106), AP clerk 6.3% (n=254). At the entry level plenty of employers are just telling you the rate, take it or leave it, which is a little bullshit coming from a firm that posts $103,600 to $191,000 for the tax manager job upstairs.

What to do with the range in front of you

Measure the band before you anchor on anything. Top minus bottom, divide by the middle, and if you're over about 30% you're looking at an employer who hasn't picked a level, so your first call is a scoping conversation about which job this actually is. Under about 15%, the number is basically real and your leverage sits in the offer details rather than the base.

Then go build your own comparable. Roughly 4 in 10 of the 66,604 live postings on our job board disclose pay, so you can stack up the same role in the same market instead of trusting one ad, and a good specialist recruiter will tell you flat out where a posted range really sits - one of the honest reasons to keep a couple of them around. Our interview prep tool is a decent place to rehearse asking the level question without sounding like you're negotiating on day one.
