About 1 in 6 US accounting jobs that disclose pay quotes an hourly rate instead of a salary - 4,856 of the 29,002 live postings that state a pay figure, per Audit Friendly data as of August 2026. The median quoted rate is $26.20 an hour, roughly $54,500 a year at 2,080 hours. Hold the job title constant and the hourly version pays 9% to 30% less than the salaried version of the same role, everywhere above clerk level.

What surprised me is that these aren't gigs. 4,049 of those 4,856 hourly postings, so about 83%, are tagged full-time. Same desk, same close, same damn month-end - just priced by the hour.

How many accounting jobs are paid hourly?

16.7% of pay-disclosing accounting and finance postings quote an hourly rate, based on our Audit Friendly job-board data covering 62,224 active postings from 20,552 companies as of August 2026. The share is wildly uneven by role, and that's where it gets interesting. 65.5% of accounts receivable specialist postings are quoted hourly, 64.5% of accounting clerk, 61.7% of billing specialist, 55.1% of bookkeeper. Then it falls off a cliff - staff accountant 18.6%, financial analyst 8.0%, senior accountant 6.2%.

So in AR or billing, hourly is just how that part of the market talks. A senior accountant looking at an hourly posting is looking at something unusual.

What is the median hourly rate for an accounting job?

The median quoted rate across 4,651 US hourly accounting postings is $26.20 an hour, with a quarter of postings under $22.88 and a quarter over $31.37, per Audit Friendly data as of August 2026. At 2,080 hours that median works out to $54,496 a year before any overtime.

Does the same job pay less by the hour?

Yes, and this is the part worth reading twice. I annualized every hourly rate at 2,080 hours and put it against the median salaried posting for the same role, every cell carrying 60+ postings a side.

Why the discount grows as you go up

Look at the order. At the bottom of the ladder hourly is fine - accounting clerks quoted hourly annualize to $48,069 against $41,800 for salaried clerk postings, 15% MORE, and bookkeepers land at $49,920 either way, dead flat. The gap opens up once you get into roles that are normally salaried, and it keeps widening all the way to procurement specialist, where hourly postings annualize to $55,432 against a $79,410 salaried median.

My read is that hourly pricing follows the work in the roles where it's the norm, and signals something else in the roles where it isn't - a temp-to-perm setup, a backfill, a headcount req somebody couldn't get approved. The title says senior accountant. The pay structure says we're not sure you're staying. That's a hell of a thing to leave for you to figure out on your own.

The benefits data leans the same way. 41.6% of hourly postings mention a 401(k) against 46.0% of salaried ones, and 8.2% of hourly roles are remote against 10.3%. Small gaps, both pointing down.

What to do when a posting quotes a rate

Do the annualization before you get on the phone. Rate times 2,080 is your number, and check it against what the same title pays on salary in your market with our job market explorer, which runs on this same posting data. If the hourly figure lands 15% or 20% light, that's a real cut you're being asked to eat quietly.

Then ask two things. Is there overtime, actually paid, at time and a half - non-exempt work over 40 hours is the one place hourly genuinely beats salary and it can close a chunk of the gap. And is this temp-to-perm, meaning what does conversion look like and when. Get a month, not a someday.

Plenty of these are good jobs at fair money, especially in AP, AR and billing. Be careful with the analyst and senior seats quoted by the hour, because that's where our data says the discount is biggest.
