Blue J is a generative AI tax research tool that answers US federal, state, Canadian and UK tax questions with cited sources and drafts memos, mainly for accounting firms. A US federal and state seat costs $1,498 a year per user (published, 4 October 2026); Canada and UK seats are sold separately.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
There is little to implement. A 7-day trial needs no credit card, Blue J says most users get an answer on first login (Why Blue J page), and the Individual plan checks out online through Stripe. Team rollouts add guided onboarding and training. There is no data conversion, mapping or tax-season cutover.
Coverage spans US federal and all 50 states (June 2025), Canada and the UK, each sold as a separate seat on Blue J's purchase pages (4 October 2026), plus OECD Pillar Two rules (March 2025), case law, Tax Notes news and commentary, and IBFD content on 220+ jurisdictions, live 25 March 2026. Blue J says its primary-source database updates daily. Reading a cited Tax Notes article in full needs a separate Tax Notes subscription, and Blue J's editorial depth trails Checkpoint Edge's 680+ editors, outside practitioners and contributors.
The Individual price is published at $1,498 a year per user, with 'No add-ons. No extra fees.' on the pricing page. Team and Enterprise pricing is quote only. The Subscriber Agreement (updated 13 February 2025) allows fee increases at renewal on 14 days' notice, auto-renews unless cancelled 14 days before term end, and lets Blue J accelerate remaining fees on termination.
Blue J says it serves more than 6,000 firms (about page, September 2026), and Oak HC/FT named KPMG, RSM and Crowe among its customers in August 2025. Seats include unlimited questions, so usage does not raise the bill. The weak point is model supply: the status page logged 'Questions failing' incidents on 28 and 30 September 2026, one tied to slow OpenAI responses, about two weeks before the 15 October individual extension deadline.
Blue J lists a toll-free number and a support email on its site, and every plan gets the online help center. The Team plan adds a dedicated customer success manager, guided onboarding, personalized prompt training and usage reporting (pricing page, 4 October 2026). No paid support tier or response-time commitment is published, so a sole practitioner relies on self-service.
Blue J keeps an annual SOC 2 Type 2 report, shared under NDA, encrypts data at rest with AES-256 and deletes uploaded files after 24 hours (security page, checked 4 October 2026). Signed agreements bar OpenAI and Google from training on Blue J data. SSO and custom access controls are Team-plan only, all data sits in AWS us-east-1 with no other region, and the terms disclaim accuracy and cap liability at $10.
The in-product AI is the product: conversational answers with inline citations, suggested follow-ups, file analysis and memo or email drafting (pricing page). Accuracy figures such as a disagree rate under 0.2 percent are vendor-claimed (April 2025 blog). Outside the app there is nothing for an agent to call: no public API, no MCP server and terms that ban automated access. Oak HC/FT reported APIs on the roadmap in August 2025.
Answers leave Blue J as PDF or DOCX downloads, copy or print (pricing page). Users can upload client files into a thread, and those files are deleted after 24 hours. No connector to tax prep software, Word, Outlook or practice management is documented, the January 2025 Karbon partnership describes customer benefits with no technical link, and there is no API.
Written by the Audit Friendly research team. No vendor edits, no sponsored placement.
You are buying a research assistant. Blue J takes a tax question in plain English and returns an answer with inline citations to primary law, Tax Notes commentary and, since March 2026, IBFD international content. It drafts the memo or client email from the same thread. It does not prepare, review or file returns. The Individual plan costs $1,498 a year per user for US federal and state content (published; Canadian and UK seats are priced separately), and Blue J says more than 6,000 firms use it, checked 4 October 2026.
The catch is everything around the answer. There is no public API, no MCP server and no add-in for Word, Outlook or the tax software, so research leaves Blue J as a PDF, a DOCX or a copy and paste. The terms ban automated access and cap Blue J's liability at $10. Answers run on OpenAI and Google models, and the status page logged two 'Questions failing' incidents in late September 2026, one tied to slow OpenAI responses. Editorial depth comes from partners such as Tax Notes and IBFD; Checkpoint Edge, by comparison, cites 680+ editors, outside practitioners and contributors.
Before signing, get in writing: the Team price per seat and what a multi-year term buys, which country seats the firm needs (Blue J's purchase pages sell US, Canadian and UK content as separate seats, checked 4 October 2026) and whether IBFD content is included, the renewal notice window (14 days in the standard Subscriber Agreement) and a cap on renewal increases, whether early termination accelerates the remaining fees, and how the firm exports thread history if it leaves. Ask for the SOC 2 Type 2 report under NDA and confirm data residency, since all data sits in AWS us-east-1.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
A partner or senior asks in plain English and gets an answer with in-line citations and a source list to verify. A Sorren tax partner told Blue J that work taking 4 to 5 hours now takes 15 minutes; treat that as vendor-claimed until the firm's own trial confirms it.
Blue J's multi-state surveys return charts for economic nexus thresholds, sales and use tax rates, estate tax and the Finnigan and Joyce rules. Useful for a quick multistate read before a nexus study. It does not calculate tax or file returns.
The thread that holds the research can draft a memo or client email, then download it as PDF or DOCX. A reviewer still has to check every citation before it goes out, and the draft does not flow into the firm's document system on its own.
IBFD treaty and country content now sits behind answers on permanent establishment, transfer pricing and Pillar Two. Confirm which plans include IBFD content before relying on it for international clients.
Staff can attach returns or operating agreements to a thread for answers grounded in the client's facts. Blue J deletes uploaded files older than 24 hours, so the firm keeps its own copy in its document system.
Blue J's homepage quotes a senior accountant at Pearce, Bevill, Leesburg, Moore praising its results on challenging tax issues, and claims 3 hours saved per user each week (checked 4 October 2026). Both are vendor-claimed; measure time saved, and how many questions still reach seniors, during the 7-day trial.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
For sole practitioners. US federal and SALT database, unlimited questions, drafting and file uploads, in-line citations and source lists, SOC 2 Type II. Published on bluej.com, checked 4 October 2026.
Canadian Income Tax and Excise Tax database, per Blue J's Canadian purchase page, checked 4 October 2026. The page does not state the currency.
UK tax database, per Blue J's UK purchase page, checked 4 October 2026. The page does not state the license term.
Everything in Individual plus dedicated customer support, guided onboarding and training, firm-wide usage insights, SSO and custom access controls.
Mentioned in the pricing FAQ as offering more options. No feature list or price is published.
No credit card required. Trial access is confirmed by email.
Charged on past-due amounts under the Subscriber Agreement, or the highest rate allowed by law if lower.
The Subscriber Agreement, last updated 13 February 2025, renews for an equal term unless the subscriber gives written notice 14 days before the end. Blue J can raise fees at renewal on 14 days' notice, fees are non-refundable, and late amounts carry 1.5 percent a month. If the subscriber terminates, Blue J may accelerate all remaining fees for the contracted term. Negotiate these clauses on any multi-year Team deal.
Blue J's security page says it uses LLM technology from OpenAI and Google. Its status page logged 'Questions failing' incidents on 28 September 2026, while awaiting a vendor fix, and on 30 September 2026, citing slow responses from OpenAI's servers, checked 4 October 2026. Both were resolved the same day. Keep a fallback research source for deadline weeks such as the 15 October extension deadline.
No public API, MCP server, or Word, Outlook or tax software add-in is documented, checked 4 October 2026. The terms of use (updated 6 February 2026) prohibit accessing the platform with robots, spiders, scrapers or other automated means. Oak HC/FT said in August 2025 that APIs are on the roadmap. Until they ship, connecting Blue J to an agent or a workpaper system is manual.
The terms of use provide the platform as is and disclaim warranties of accuracy, completeness and reliability. Total liability is capped at ten US dollars. Blue J's disagree rate under 0.2 percent, reported in April 2025, is vendor-claimed. Keep a review step for every answer that supports a filed position or client advice.
Blue J's security page says all data is stored and processed in the United States in AWS us-east-1, with no other region and no on-premise option, checked 4 October 2026. Canadian and UK firms with client-data residency rules need to clear this before uploading client files. Uploaded files are deleted after 24 hours.
Blue J's purchase pages, checked 4 October 2026, sell single-country seats: US federal and SALT at $1,498 a year per user, the Canadian Income Tax and Excise Tax database at $1,999 a year per user (currency not stated) and the UK tax database at £1,500 per license. The Canadian and UK pricing pages still show the $1,498 US plan card, priced in US dollars in the page markup. None of the purchase pages lists IBFD content, and Team and Enterprise pricing is quote only. Reading cited Tax Notes articles in full requires a separate Tax Notes subscription, per Blue J's February 2024 announcement. Get the content scope per seat in writing.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No. Blue J publishes no public API, developer documentation or MCP server, and nothing under its name appears in the official MCP registry, checked 4 October 2026. Oak HC/FT, which co-led the Series D, wrote in August 2025 that APIs are on the product roadmap; treat that as a plan until documentation ships.
Scope: None today. There is no read or write surface for threads, answers, uploaded files or usage data outside the web app. The terms of use (updated 6 February 2026) prohibit accessing the platform with any robot, spider, scraper or other automated means, which rules out browser agents as well.
Turnkey: Not applicable. A firm that wants Claude or another agent in its research flow has to copy answers out of Blue J or export a PDF or DOCX and hand that file to the agent.
In the product, Blue J answers questions conversationally with inline citations, suggests follow-up questions, analyzes uploaded files and drafts memos and emails. It runs on OpenAI and Google models and does not train its own. Blue J reports a user disagree rate under 0.2 percent and about 3 hours saved per user each week; both figures are vendor-claimed.
IBFD content became available in Blue J for questions on permanent establishment, transfer pricing and Pillar Two. Blue J said it had answered more than 6 million tax questions to date.
CSEA members get Blue J at an exclusive rate. It is one of several association deals extending Blue J to enrolled agents and state CPA societies.
IBFD content covering 220+ jurisdictions was set to enter Blue J in beta in late 2025, with general availability planned for Q1 2026 in the US, Canada and UK.
Intrepid Growth Partners, Ten Coves Capital and CPA.com joined the round. Blue J said revenue and customers more than doubled in the first half of 2025.
Blue J added federal, state and local government sources for all 50 states and its first multi-state survey charts, including economic nexus thresholds and sales and use tax rates.
Blue J switched from GPT-4o to GPT-4.1 and reported lower error rates in its own testing. It also claims a user disagree rate under 0.2 percent.
A sole practitioner pays $1,498 a year per user for US federal and state content, published on bluej.com and checked 4 October 2026. Blue J's Canadian purchase page lists $1,999 a year per user for Canadian content (currency not stated), and its UK page lists £1,500 per license. Blue J publishes no add-ons or extra fees.
A firm with several tax professionals goes on the Team plan, which is quote only. At the US Individual list price, ten seats would cost about $14,980 a year; that is an Audit Friendly estimate, and the Team price may land higher or lower after negotiation.
Oak HC/FT reported in August 2025 that more than half of Blue J's ARR sits on multi-year contracts, so expect a multi-year proposal and ask what discount it buys.
The standard Subscriber Agreement runs one year unless the order says otherwise and auto-renews unless cancelled in writing 14 days before the end. Fees are non-refundable, can rise at renewal on 14 days' notice, and can be accelerated if the subscriber terminates.
Answers and drafts download as PDF or DOCX, or can be copied and printed. No bulk export of thread history is documented, and the terms bar scraping, so save what matters as the work happens. Uploaded files are deleted after 24 hours, and any customer, present or past, can ask Blue J's security team to erase its data.
For one user, setup is self-serve: sign up, start the 7-day trial with no credit card, and ask a question. Blue J says most users get an answer the first time they log in.
For a firm, the Team plan adds guided onboarding and training from Blue J's customer success team, SSO and access controls, and usage reporting. There is no data conversion or mapping. The real work is a review rule so staff verify citations before advice goes out.
No. Blue J has no public API and no MCP server, checked 4 October 2026, and its terms of use forbid robots, scrapers and other automated access.
An agent can work only with what a user exports: a DOCX or PDF memo, or copied text. Oak HC/FT wrote in August 2025 that APIs are on Blue J's roadmap; ask for a date and scope in writing.
