CCH Axcess Tax is Wolters Kluwer's cloud tax preparation software for CPA firms, covering 1040, 1065, 1120, 1120-S, 1041, 990, 5500 and 706/709 returns, sold in packages by users and return volume, with published prices only for small firms.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
The packages page lists 1040/1040-NR, 1065, 1120, 1120-S, 990, 1041, 5500 and 706/709, plus a power pack of nine specialty corporate forms and consolidated returns. The fact sheet cites thousands of calculating forms for federal, state, county and city entities. In 2026, 85.9 percent of its users said it had every form they needed, behind UltraTax CS at 92.1 percent.
The packages page (January 2026) runs from 1 to 99+ users and 75 to 10,000+ returns, with consolidated returns and nine specialty 1120 forms in packages of 1,000+ returns. Wolters Kluwer says 94 of Accounting Today's Top 100 firms use CCH Axcess (its tax product page says 95). One cloud database avoids per-office server sprawl, though the firm depends on Wolters Kluwer uptime at deadlines.
It shares one database with CCH Axcess Document, Workstream, Practice, Client Collaboration, iQ and Engagement, and links to ProSystem fx Planning, Fixed Assets and Scan AutoFlow (fact sheet, packages page). Open Integration APIs and the CCH Marketplace reach outside tools. Users still rated integration with other software 3.2 of 5 and data import 3.4, both at the survey average.
The fact sheet (March 2026) lists on-screen review with tick marks, reviewer notes, complexity scores and diagnostics, and the product page lists real-time e-file status tracking and CCH eSign for Form 8879. The vendor's Tax API page adds e-file status monitoring and return unlock controls. No SOC 1 or SOC 2 report is described on the product, packages, features or fact sheet pages, and a May 2019 malware attack took CCH cloud platforms offline for days (Accounting Today, 7 May 2019).
The features page describes a self-service online data conversion, with paid Xpitax help for harder conversions. Essentials comes with a setup wizard and self-guided e-learning; Complete includes web consulting; larger firms pay separately for coordinated implementation (packages page). Users report a steep start: 26.3 percent named the learning curve a top dislike and ease of use scored 3.6 of 5 (2026 survey).
No MCP server exists for CCH Axcess, and none is listed in the official MCP Registry (checked 4 October 2026). Documented Tax APIs cover return creation, bulk retrieval, e-file status and roll-forward, but the Developer Portal requires a login and the advanced kit is licensed separately. In-product AI (Scan, Intelligence, Advisor) is real but sold as modules, and accuracy figures are vendor-claimed.
The eStore publishes Essentials prices ($2,814 for 100 returns, $60.55 per extra return, $535 for unlimited states) but sells them only to new customers and aims Essentials at firms with four or fewer tax professionals. Complete, Pro and Solutions packages are quote only, and add-ons such as Premier support, Scan and Tax Advanced APIs carry no public price. 64.2 percent of its users named price a top dislike in 2026.
Standard phone, chat and email support is free, and paid Premier tiers target first response in 1 to 4 business hours (vendor page). In the 2026 Tax Adviser survey its users rated ease of getting support 3.3 and quality 3.4, the lowest of seven products, and rated vendor training 3.4, also the lowest. 34.6 percent named support a top dislike.

You are buying the tax engine at the center of Wolters Kluwer's CCH Axcess suite. It prepares every major federal return type in Wolters Kluwer's cloud through the CCH Axcess application installed on each computer, with thousands of calculating federal, state, county and city forms, and it shares one client database with Axcess Document, Workstream, Practice and Client Collaboration. Wolters Kluwer says 94 of Accounting Today's Top 100 firms use CCH Axcess (its tax product page says 95). In the 2026 Tax Adviser survey, 92.3 percent of its users said they run it in the cloud.
The catch is the daily experience. In that survey (published 31 August 2026) CCH Axcess Tax users rated it 4.0 of 5 overall against a 4.2 average, 3.6 for ease of use, and gave it the lowest marks of seven major products for getting support (3.3) and support quality (3.4). Only the small-firm Essentials packages, sold to new customers, carry a published price, and 64.2 percent of its users name price a top dislike. The AI pieces (Scan, Intelligence, Advisor) are separate modules, the advanced Tax APIs are licensed separately, and there is no MCP server.
Before signing, get in writing: the return volume, user count and states in your package, and the per-return and per-state overage rates; which modules are included (Scan, Intelligence, Tax Advanced APIs, Premier support); the renewal price for the next two seasons; who runs the data conversion from your current package and by what date; and how long you keep read access to prior-year returns if you leave.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Scan classifies source documents, extracts K-1, W-2 and 1099 data and flows it into the K-1 Manager, where staff reclass and map it to Schedule E. Scan is a separate module. Test it on your own messiest K-1 packages before you count on the claimed accuracy.
Packages of 1,000+ returns add 1120-F, 1120-FSC, 1120-IC-DISC, 1120-L, 1120-PC, 1120-POL, 1120-REIT, 1120-RIC and 1120-SF plus consolidated returns. Common data entered at the parent level pushes down to subsidiaries, per the fact sheet.
Essentials covers 1040, 1065, 1120, 1120-S and 990 in up to 5 states with a setup wizard and free support. Trust, estate, gift and 5500 returns cost extra per return ($53.90 each on Wolters Kluwer's Essentials pages, June 2026), so price that work before choosing Essentials over a bigger package.
Firms with developers or a Marketplace partner can batch e-file extensions, roll returns forward in bulk and split print sets into Document folders. The core Tax APIs are included; the advanced kit is an extra license.
Reviewers use tick marks, preparer and reviewer notes, complexity scores and diagnostics, and a dashboard routes notes back to the exact field. CCH eSign captures Form 8879 signatures without paper.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
100 return authorizations a year for 1040, 1040-NR, 1065, 1120, 1120-S and 990 in up to 5 states; 1041, 5500 and 706/709 cost extra per return. Aimed at firms with four or fewer tax professionals; new customers only.
Same scope as Essentials 100 with 200 return authorizations.
Same scope with 400 return authorizations. Unlimited or pay-as-you-go return options are also listed.
1 to 9 users, 75 to 1,000 returns, all states, specialty returns (1041, 5500, 706/709) and web-based consulting.
1 to 19 users, 500 to 3,000 returns, all states; consolidated returns and the corporation power pack at 1,000+ returns.
1 to 99+ users and 75 to 10,000+ returns; implementation and live training billed separately.
Returns beyond the Essentials allowance.
Essentials covers 5 states. The eStore sells an Unlimited States add-on for $535 and shows no single-state price (checked 4 October 2026).
Paid tiers with first-response targets of 1, 2 or 4 business hours and a dedicated support representative on the top two tiers (Premier support page, August 2025); Wolters Kluwer does not guarantee the targets.
Tax Transfer, e-File, Print, Rollforward and DataScan APIs, sold separately from the included core Tax APIs.
Return creation, bulk retrieval, e-file status and unlock APIs, included for CCH Axcess Tax users per the March 2026 fact sheet and Wolters Kluwer's API page (May 2026).
Email, chat and phone support at no additional charge.
The eStore lists Essentials at $2,814 to $5,264 for 100 to 400 returns, for new customers only and aimed at firms with four or fewer tax professionals (checked 4 October 2026). Complete, Pro and Solutions packages, Premier support, Scan and the Tax Advanced APIs are quote only. 64.2 percent of CCH Axcess Tax users named price a top dislike in the 2026 Tax Adviser survey. Ask for a multi-year renewal cap before tax season pressure sets in.
In the 2026 Tax Adviser survey (published 31 August 2026), CCH Axcess Tax users rated ease of getting support 3.3 and its quality 3.4, the lowest of seven products. 65.5 percent received vendor training, the highest share of the seven, yet rated it 3.4, also the lowest. Faster response targets of 1 to 4 business hours come only with paid Premier tiers, and Wolters Kluwer says it cannot guarantee those targets.
Users rated ease of use 3.6 of 5 against a 4.2 average, 23.3 percent named ease of use and 26.3 percent the learning curve as top dislikes, and only 58.9 percent would recommend it to someone starting a practice (2026 Tax Adviser survey). Plan real training time for seasonal staff before January.
A malware attack on 6 May 2019 led Wolters Kluwer to take CCH platforms offline, and Accounting Today reported CCH Axcess back online only on 8 May (Accounting Today, 7 May 2019, updated 8 May). On 15 September 2020, the extension deadline, CCH Axcess e-filing failed for some users and was working again by the next afternoon (Accounting Today, 16 September 2020). Ask for the uptime commitment, status page and deadline contingency plan in the contract.
Wolters Kluwer claims Scan averages 97.5 percent K-1 extraction accuracy and cut K-1 processing time by as much as 91.7 percent (press release, 11 June 2026); no independent test confirms either. Wolters Kluwer told Accounting Today on 13 May 2026 that CCH Axcess Advisor has no agents today. There is no MCP server, and the Tax Advanced APIs that an agent would need for e-file and print work are licensed separately.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No. Wolters Kluwer documents no MCP server for CCH Axcess, and the official MCP Registry lists none as of 4 October 2026. Its API page frames agents as a future use, saying autonomous systems "could one day use these APIs".
Scope: The agent surface today is the CCH Axcess Open Integration APIs. Core Tax APIs, included with CCH Axcess Tax per the March 2026 fact sheet, create and manage returns, retrieve returns in bulk, monitor e-file status and unlock returns. Tax Advanced APIs (Tax Transfer, e-File, Print, Rollforward, DataScan) are sold separately and add import, extraction, release and print work.
Turnkey: No. A firm needs an integrator key from the login-gated Developer Portal, OAuth setup, and a mandatory getting-started consulting session, per the vendor's API page. Any agent connection is custom code or a CCH Marketplace partner.
In-product AI runs on Wolters Kluwer's Expert AI layer: CCH Axcess Scan extracts K-1, W-2 and 1099 data, CCH Axcess Intelligence is a chat assistant grounded in CCH AnswerConnect, and CCH Axcess Advisor surfaces advisory leads. The vendor claims Scan averages 97.5 percent extraction accuracy and cut K-1 processing time by as much as 91.7 percent; no independent test confirms either. Wolters Kluwer told Accounting Today in May 2026 that Advisor has no agents today.
Wolters Kluwer demonstrated Scan, Intelligence, Advisor and agentic audit features and claimed Scan cut K-1 processing time by as much as 91.7 percent (vendor-claimed).
Wolters Kluwer announced that OpenAI models will power agentic workflows embedded in CCH Axcess, such as gathering client data and classifying documents; the announcement gave no release date.
The advisory module that mines CCH Axcess Tax data for planning opportunities became generally available; Wolters Kluwer said it has no agents today.
Wolters Kluwer's CCH Axcess Tax fact sheet, dated March 2026 with no day given, says users now get core APIs included, with optional Tax Advanced APIs for more complex automation.
Wolters Kluwer embedded its Expert AI layer across the suite; Intelligence is a chat assistant for research and Q and A over returns and workpapers, with Scan, Advisor and Workflow modules announced alongside.
New customers can buy Essentials on the eStore: $2,814 for 100 returns, $4,039 for 200 and $5,264 for 400, with extra returns at $60.55 each and unlimited states for $535 above the five included (checked 4 October 2026). The eStore aims Essentials at firms with four or fewer full-time tax professionals, and Wolters Kluwer describes each package as a yearly allowance of returns.
Firms that need more users, more returns or specialty returns buy Tax Complete (1 to 9 users), Tax Pro (1 to 19) or Tax Solutions (1 to 99+) by quote, priced on users, return volume, states and modules. No public benchmark isolates CCH Axcess Tax contracts, so get a competing quote: Lacerte publishes a $599 a year pay-per-return license (marked down from $813 on 4 October 2026) plus $105 per 1040, and UltraTax CS quotes on users, returns and states.
Wolters Kluwer does not publish contract length, renewal caps or exit terms for CCH Axcess Tax; eStore packages carry their own terms and conditions. Ask for the term, the renewal uplift cap and the notice period in writing.
Return data lives in Wolters Kluwer's cloud. The Return Manager shows seven years of returns, and the Tax Advanced APIs support extracting return data and printing returns in bulk, but those APIs are an extra license. Negotiate read-only access to prior-year returns, or a bulk PDF and data export, for at least one season after termination.
Essentials orders are processed in 24 to 48 hours and use a setup wizard and self-guided e-learning. Tax Complete adds web-based consulting, Tax Pro uses coordinated implementation services, and Tax Solutions bills implementation and live training separately.
Data conversion from a prior package is self-service through an online tool, with paid Xpitax help for harder conversions. Audit Friendly's estimate for a multi-office firm is one off-season: convert and train between May and November so staff are not learning the software in March.
Not out of the box. No MCP server for CCH Axcess Tax, first-party or community, appears in the official MCP Registry or in a GitHub repository search as of 4 October 2026.
A firm can license the CCH Axcess Open Integration APIs, get an integrator key from the Developer Portal and write code that lets an agent list returns, check e-file status and, with the Tax Advanced APIs, run exports, print sets and roll-forwards. The return input screens and reviewer sign-off stay with people.
