Intuit ProConnect Tax is browser-based professional tax preparation software for small and mid-size accounting firms, sold per return plus a yearly user license, with QuickBooks Online data import, IRS transcripts and Intuit Tax Advisor planning built in.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
There is nothing to install: ProConnect runs in a browser on Mac, Windows, Linux and mobile devices, and the free trial has no time limit, though it will not e-file or print (FAQ and trial page, checked 9 October 2026). Conversion is free from 11 named packages and Easy Start lays out five setup steps. The gaps: 1041 data converts only from Lacerte and ProSystem fx, CCH Axcess is absent from the conversion chart, and Intuit tells firms to review converted data before filing.
Per-return list prices, volume tiers at 50, 100 and 200 returns, four bundles and the User Access fee are all published (pricing page, checked 9 October 2026). The picture gets muddier at the edges: 400+ returns are quoted, promotions are stacked on every page, and Intuit's own pages disagree, with a large-firm page still showing tax year 2025 rates and an overview footnote quoting the old $1,049 User Access cap. The 7 percent renewal cap is published only in an overview page footnote, for new customers through year two, and is missing from the tax year 2026 pricing page.
Intuit's FAQ lists 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, 1120-S, 990 and 709 for federal and all states, with unlimited state, multi-state and municipal forms inside each return price (checked 9 October 2026). The pricing and features pages cite 5,700+ forms and 21,000+ diagnostics against Lacerte's 7,200+ and 25,000+, and the FAQ lists no Form 706 or 5500. Coverage is US only, and in early 2026 community users reported waiting on North Carolina and FBAR e-file availability.
The native path is Intuit's own stack: Prep for Taxes brings a mapped QuickBooks Online trial balance into the return, Intuit Link collects client documents, IRS transcripts pull into the return, and QuickBooks Online invoices can be raised from ProConnect (features and setup pages, checked 9 October 2026). The integrations hub lists Karbon, Ignition, SmartVault, Dropbox and Google Drive. There is no documented public API for anything else, and a long-time Lacerte firm that switched says it misses Lacerte's data filtering and CSV export (Intuit Tax Pro Center, modified 27 July 2026).
Intuit lists 21,000+ diagnostics, review checkmarks with a change report, automatic locking of e-filed returns and Advanced, Standard and custom user roles (features page and user help article, checked 9 October 2026). Intuit Sign adds KBA identity checks and timestamped audit trail reports, and an EFIN must be verified with Intuit before e-file. No ProConnect-specific SOC 1 or SOC 2 report is public: Intuit's compliance page sends SOC requests to a separate portal, and a February 2024 community thread found reports for QuickBooks products only. Intuit keeps the current tax year plus six prior years and tells firms to archive files locally.
Support runs through a 24/7 digital assistant plus phone callback and chat, weekdays 6 AM to 5 PM PT with longer weekday hours and weekend openings around filing deadlines (contact article, checked 9 October 2026). Easy Start onboarding, free data conversion and live CPE webinars are included. The pricing footnote lists support among the features that need a paid User Access license, while the help article lists it for Standard users, so confirm which applies. ProConnect was not among the seven products rated for support in the 2026 AICPA survey, so there is no independent score.
The cloud model removes servers, several users can work at once, and Advanced User Access is capped at a flat $2,100 for 10 or more users (pricing page, checked 9 October 2026). Pricing above 400 returns is quoted, and an older Intuit page still shows large-firm tiers up to 2,000+ returns. Intuit's own menu positions Lacerte for complex returns and multiple preparers, and only 4.4 percent of respondents to the 2026 AICPA survey used ProConnect Tax, so public evidence of it running large multi-office firms is thin.
No ProConnect MCP server was listed in the official MCP registry or on GitHub on 9 October 2026, and Intuit closed a customer request for a ProConnect API on 29 April 2025 as not chosen for implementation. The Intuit Developer portal shows a ProConnect Tax app scope but publishes no ProConnect API documentation. In-product AI is real but narrow: SmartReturn imports documents and drafts low to medium complexity 1040s for review, a client onboarding agent drafts checklists and questionnaires, and Intuit Assist suggests strategies in Intuit Tax Advisor. Time-saving figures are vendor claims.

You are buying Intuit's cloud tax engine, which Intuit says is built on Lacerte technology, in a browser with nothing to install. Each return bought covers federal plus unlimited state, multi-state and municipal forms, amended returns and extensions for that client. Advanced User Access adds e-file, printing, IRS transcripts, the Intuit Link client portal, K-1 delivery and Intuit Tax Advisor planning, and Intuit Sign signatures come with the software license (FAQ, pricing page and Intuit Sign page, checked 11 October 2026). The pitch to QuickBooks firms is the books-to-tax path: Prep for Taxes moves a mapped trial balance into the return, and since 26 May 2026 the Tax Prep feature in Intuit Accountant Suite, launched as a beta, runs on ProConnect.
The catch is depth and lock-in. Intuit's FAQ lists 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, 1120-S, 990 and 709 returns, with no Form 706 or 5500, and Intuit's own menu steers complex returns and multiple preparers to Lacerte. There is no documented public API: Intuit closed a customer request for one on 29 April 2025 as not chosen for implementation. The mandatory Advanced User Access fee doubled from $105 per user on Intuit's tax year 2025 pages to $210 for tax year 2026, and Intuit now keeps only the current tax year plus six prior years of returns online. In the 2026 AICPA survey 4.4 percent of respondents used ProConnect Tax, too few for it to be rated beside the seven major products (reported, 1 September 2026).
Before signing, get three things in writing: the per-return rate for the firm's exact mix of individual and business returns, the number of Advanced users, and the renewal terms. The 7 percent cap on per-return increases appears only in an overview page footnote worded for firms that did not use Lacerte or ProSeries in tax year 2024, covers new customers through their second year only and is missing from the tax year 2026 pricing page (checked 11 October 2026); User Access is excluded from discounts. Confirm that every form and state the firm files appears in the supported forms finder, check which return types convert from the current software, and decide how PDFs will be saved before returns age out of the seven-year window. If Client Insights matters, ask what Intuit Accountant Suite Accelerate will cost once its free beta ends on 19 January 2027.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Prep for Taxes previews the trial balance from QuickBooks Online Accountant, lets the preparer adjust and document book-to-tax differences, then imports the mapped data into the return. Intuit says customers reported saving more than 40 minutes per return on average; no independent account confirms it.
SmartReturn batch-imports client documents, tracks what is still missing on a checklist and shows each imported figure beside its source document for review. Intuit limits it to low to medium complexity 1040 returns, and the preparer reviews everything before filing.
A firm buys returns as needed at $109.95, or prepays for volume tiers at 50, 100 and 200 returns. Every return includes all states, extensions and amendments for that client, and unused returns stay usable for that tax year for up to three calendar years while User Access is renewed.
Intuit Tax Advisor reads the return, suggests strategies from its library and produces client-ready reports with projected savings, quarterly estimates and QBI analysis. Each user who builds plans needs a paid Advanced User Access license, and Intuit labels the output as informational only.
ProConnect emails each partner or shareholder a secure link to their K-1 package and can import K-1 data into the individual returns the firm also prepares. The 19-minute average comes from an Intuit customer survey compiled in July 2024.
Intuit converts 1040 data from ATX, CrossLink, Drake, Lacerte, ProSeries, ProSystem fx, TaxAct, TaxSlayer, TaxWise, TurboTax and UltraTax CS. Partnership and corporate returns convert from eight of those, 1041 returns only from Lacerte and ProSystem fx, and converted data should be reviewed before filing.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.

ProConnect has required a paid User Access license to e-file or print since 1 January 2025. Intuit's large-firm pricing page, still showing tax year 2025 terms on 9 October 2026, lists the fee at $105 per user, and an overview footnote for calendar 2025 lists a $1,049 flat fee for 10 or more users. The current pricing page and FAQ list $210 per user and a $2,100 cap for tax year 2026. The fee is exempt from discounts and promotions, so model it separately from the per-return price.
An Intuit help article says that from tax year 2025 ProConnect supports the current tax year plus the preceding six, and that older returns are removed from Intuit's systems (checked 9 October 2026). The FAQ adds that Intuit does not guarantee indefinite storage or take on data-retention liability, and that closing the account removes access. Firms with longer retention policies need a routine for saving PDFs outside ProConnect.
The request sat on Intuit's idea exchange from 2 December 2022 and drew 55 likes and comments from firms wanting links to SurePrep, GruntWorx and Excel. A moderator reply on 29 April 2025 said it had been reviewed and was not chosen to be implemented, and the thread is closed, although its status label read Implemented on 11 October 2026. Intuit's developer portal lists a ProConnect Tax scope but publishes no documentation for it. One commenter wrote in August 2024 that the firm was considering CCH Axcess because it has APIs. Integrations are limited to what Intuit ships: QuickBooks Online, Intuit Link, Google Drive, Dropbox and hub partners such as Karbon, Ignition and SmartVault. Ask Intuit in writing whether any API access is open to the firm.
The ProConnect FAQ lists 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, 1120-S, 990 and 709 returns. It leaves out Form 706 and the 5500 series, both of which Intuit lists for Lacerte, and a community reply from November 2024 states that ProConnect does not do 706. The ProConnect overview page cites 7,200+ forms while the pricing and features pages cite 5,700+ (all checked 9 October 2026), so check each needed form in the supported forms finder before buying.
On 9 October 2026 the main pricing page listed individual returns at $109.95 and User Access at $210. The large-firm pricing page still listed a $104.95 list price, tiers from 300 returns at 15 percent off and a $105 User Access fee, which are tax year 2025 terms. The bundle cards carried a banner saying current pricing ends 3/1, with no year, and new-customer promotions ended on different dates (15 October and 5 November 2026). Ask sales to quote from the tax year 2026 price list and to put the expiry date in the quote.
Tax Prep, powered by ProConnect Tax, became the only tax software integrated in Intuit Accountant Suite on 26 May 2026 and was labeled beta in Intuit's May 2026 feature list. Client Insights requires the Accelerate plan, which Intuit says is free during a beta that runs through 19 January 2027 and charged after that. CPA Practice Advisor reported a planned Accelerate price of $149 per month in February 2026; Intuit's ProConnect pages state no price. New customers should also allow up to 48 hours for the first data sync.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No first-party MCP server for ProConnect Tax was listed in the official MCP registry or on GitHub when checked on 9 October 2026. Intuit's public MCP work covers QuickBooks: an open-source QuickBooks Online MCP server on GitHub that runs locally, and a Developer MCP on developer.intuit.com that helps developers set up QuickBooks API apps against a sandbox. Neither reaches ProConnect returns.
Scope: There is no documented public API either. A customer request for a ProConnect API, opened on 2 December 2022 and liked by 55 people, drew a moderator reply on 29 April 2025 saying it had been reviewed and was not chosen to be implemented. The thread is closed, yet its status label read Implemented when checked on 11 October 2026, so Intuit's own page is inconsistent. The Intuit Developer portal's app settings do show a ProConnect Tax product, described as giving access to the API for the ProConnect app, with a scope named com.intuit.proconnect.taxreturns, yet the portal's 651-page documentation sitemap had no ProConnect page on 11 October 2026. Audit Friendly reads that scope as plumbing for hub partners such as Karbon, Ignition and SmartVault; that reading is an estimate from public pages.
Turnkey: No. A firm admin has nothing to switch on for an outside agent. Third parties work around the gap by driving the browser: TaxGPT says its agent logs into ProConnect, and small GitHub projects automate form filling with bots. Those tools run on the firm's own sign-in, and Intuit publishes no documentation for that route.
In-product AI: SmartReturn batch-imports client documents, builds a checklist and shows each figure beside its source for low to medium complexity 1040 returns. The client onboarding agent turns an uploaded prior-year 1040 into a document checklist and questionnaire that the preparer reviews before sending; quotes are marked coming soon. AI Client Briefing, labeled an experiment, summarizes a return from 60 data points, and Intuit Assist suggests strategies inside Intuit Tax Advisor. One customer quoted by Intuit says SmartReturn halves return time; that is a vendor-supplied testimonial.
The 2026 Journal of Accountancy and Tax Adviser survey of 1,808 AICPA members put ProConnect Tax at 4.4 percent of responses, up 0.6 points in a year and just behind the seven products it rates.
Intuit's fiscal 2026 results, for the year ended 31 July 2026, put ProTax revenue at $647 million. Intuit does not break out ProConnect Tax within that group.
After IRS Alert 2026-19 of 24 June 2026, Intuit's Tax Pro Center set out how ProConnect's onboarding agent and SmartReturn draft work that the preparer must review and approve before anything is sent or filed.
Intuit made ProConnect Tax the only tax software integrated in Intuit Accountant Suite, with one sign-in for QuickBooks Online and tax clients. Intuit's May 2026 feature list labels it beta.
CPA Practice Advisor reported that QuickBooks Online Accountant will be discontinued in December 2026, with firms moved to the free Core plan of Intuit Accountant Suite. Prep for Taxes users should plan for the change.
A moderator reply said the idea-exchange request for a ProConnect Tax API, open since December 2022, had been reviewed and was not chosen to be implemented. The thread's status label read Implemented when checked on 11 October 2026.
Pricing is per return plus a user fee. List prices are $109.95 per individual return and $129.95 per business return bought one at a time, with prepaid volume tiers at 50, 100 and 200 returns, plus Advanced User Access at $210 per user a year, capped at $2,100 for 10 or more users (published, checked 9 October 2026).
A firm with 2 Advanced users that prepays 100 individual returns at $54.95 and 50 business returns at $84.85 would pay about $10,158 at list before promotions (Audit Friendly estimate). The Plus bundle, with 2 users and 200 individual returns, was shown at $5,868 a year for new customers on the same date, with business returns extra.
Each return includes all states, extensions and amendments for that client. Quick Employer Forms ($370 list), Protection Plus ($15 per 1040 at firm level) and a SmartVault portal ($65 a month for the one-user ProConnect plan) cost extra.
Returns are bought for a specific tax year and User Access runs for a calendar year. Refunds are available only within five business days of the software release date or the payment date, used returns are never refunded, and unused returns stay usable for that tax year for up to three calendar years while User Access is renewed. An overview page footnote gives new customers a cap of 7 percent a year on per-return renewal increases through their second year; the tax year 2026 pricing page does not repeat it (checked 11 October 2026), so ask for it in the quote.
Getting data out means PDFs and reports. Intuit's FAQ says return copies can be saved as PDFs, and it recommends archiving files locally because it does not guarantee indefinite storage and closing the account removes access. ProConnect keeps the current tax year plus six prior years online. Drake Software lists data conversion from most competitor software, so ask the next vendor what it can read from ProConnect before leaving.
Most of it is self-service. ProConnect runs in a browser, so setup is an Intuit account, EFIN registration, two-step verification, user roles and firm print settings, following Intuit's five-step Easy Start program. Intuit converts prior-year data from 11 named packages at no charge after the firm uploads a backup, and emails when it is done.
Plan on one to two weeks from sign-up to a first live return (Audit Friendly estimate), longer if 1041 clients have to be re-keyed, since fiduciary data converts only from Lacerte and ProSystem fx. A firm admin and one preparer can handle it without IT.
No documented interface allows it today. ProConnect Tax had no MCP server and no public API documentation when checked on 9 October 2026, and Intuit closed a customer request for an API on 29 April 2025 as not chosen for implementation. Intuit's public MCP projects cover QuickBooks Online.
Claude can help around the software: reading exported PDF returns and CSV reports, drafting client letters and review notes, and preparing import spreadsheets. Inside the product, Intuit's own AI handles document import for simpler 1040s, onboarding checklists and planning suggestions, with the preparer approving each step.
