Tax1099 is Zenwork's e-filing service for US information returns: 1099, W-2, 94x, 1095, 1042-S and 40+ forms in all, with W-9 collection, TIN matching and recipient delivery, sold pay per form to small businesses, accounting firms and enterprise AP teams.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
Per-form tiers, add-on fees and both annual plans are on the public pricing page, with a calculator (10 October 2026). Quotes start only above 1,000 forms, and the SSO implementation fee is unpublished. Two blemishes: the $0.72 headline is the marginal rate for forms 501 to 1,000, and the page's own 600-form worked example does not match its tier table.
Sign-up is free with no credit card, and filing is a three-step create, validate and e-file flow (home page, 10 October 2026). Data arrives by Excel template, a user's own spreadsheet with on-the-fly field mapping, or a connector. Heavier work appears only at the top end: SSO carries a one-time implementation fee, and API access needs a developer account. The vendor offers a migration specialist to teams leaving another 1099 tool.
The site lists 40+ forms: the 1099 series including 1099-DA, 1098 forms, W-2 and W-2C, 94x payroll returns, ACA 1095-B and 1095-C, 1042 and 1042-S, Puerto Rico 480 forms, 5498, 3921, 3922, the 990 series and extensions (all-forms page, 10 October 2026). State pages cover 1099, W-2 and ACA rules for every state, and the vendor says it transmits through IRIS for tax year 2026. Coverage stops at the US border: no CARF, DAC7 or CRS reporting is offered.
A vendor-hosted MCP server answers at mcp.tax1099.com with OAuth and a version 1.0.0 health check (10 October 2026), and its docs list 64 read and write tools. Submit-to-IRS tools exist for 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC only, and setup is documented for Cursor alone. The in-product AI Tax Assist can file those two forms in chat for up to 50 recipients, per the vendor. The REST API reference sits behind a developer login, which holds the score down.
The same account files one form or thousands, and the enterprise quote form offers volume bands up to 1,000,001 forms and above. The About page cites 30 million+ transactions and $413 billion of income reported for tax year 2022 (vendor figures). Bulk TIN matching runs 10,000 records a batch. What is missing is public detail: no API rate limits are published, and the 99.99 percent uptime commitment applies only as stated in a quote.
Tax1099 states it is an IRS-authorized e-file provider and SOC 2 Type 2 certified (enterprise page), and Zenwork's data processing addendum offers SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports on written request (read 10 October 2026). Audit trails, two-factor sign-in and four years of storage are on every plan, while the enter, review and approve workflow and SSO need the Scale plan. The terms disclaim penalties and inaccurate submissions, and no accuracy guarantee or audit defense is published.
Two-way 1099 sync is documented for QuickBooks Online, Xero and BILL, with one-way imports from QuickBooks Desktop, Sage Intacct, Zoho Books, FreshBooks, Entrata, Tipalti and CustomBooks (integrations page, 10 October 2026). The Oracle NetSuite entry is a CSV process, and no SAP, Oracle Fusion or Workday connector is listed. Enterprise accounts can feed data by API or SFTP, and Zapier covers triggers and actions.
Channels are email, live chat and an AI assistant on chat and phone; live chat runs weekdays 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM Central and around the clock in tax season (contact page, 10 October 2026). The service level agreement commits to a response within a commercially reasonable time. Trustpilot shows 4.4 out of 5 from 488 reviews with 12 percent one star, and the Xero App Store shows 3.25 from 4 reviews, where a one-star review faults support (reported).

Tax1099 is a self-serve filing service for US information returns. Sign-up is free, no card is needed, and the price list is public: $2.99 a form for the first 20 federal e-files, falling to $0.72 for forms 501 to 1,000 (published, checked 10 October 2026). It covers 40+ forms, syncs both ways with QuickBooks Online, Xero and BILL, and bundles W-9 requests, TIN matching, e-delivery, print and mail, and state filing. Zenwork, the parent, has run it since 2010 and added a hosted MCP server in December 2025.
The catch is everything around the filing engine. The listed phone number reaches an AI assistant, live chat keeps weekday hours outside tax season, and the service level agreement promises a response within a commercially reasonable time. Trustpilot shows 4.4 out of 5 from 488 reviews with 12 percent at one star (reported, 10 October 2026). Approval workflow, user management, API access and SSO all sit on the $349 a year Scale plan. The REST API reference is behind a developer login. The terms disclaim liability for penalties and late or inaccurate submissions. TaxBandits' published tiers come out cheaper at every volume up to 1,000 forms (Audit Friendly estimate).
Before signing a quote for more than 1,000 forms, get the per-form rate by tier, the price-adjustment clause and the expiry date of any prepaid credits in writing; the standard terms expire credits after 12 months with no refund. Ask for the SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports, which the data processing addendum says are available on written request. Confirm the one-time SSO fee, whether MCP and API access need the Scale plan, the support hours that apply to the account, and how long data stays retrievable after the contract ends.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Vendors and payments import from the accounting system, edits made in Tax1099 sync back, and the forms go to the IRS in a create, validate and e-file flow. The first 20 forms cost $2.99 each and the rate steps down with volume (published). For tax year 2026 the vendor says it transmits through IRIS, so the filer does not manage a separate IRS connection.
The W-9 and W-8 manager emails requests and stores the completed forms; request packs run from $1.00 for one to $95.00 for 1,000. TIN and name pairs are checked against IRS records one at a time or in batches of up to 10,000. Teams and Scale plans include 250 match credits, and a help note on the pricing page presents bulk matching as a benefit for those two plans (checked 11 October 2026).
One login holds every client payer. On Scale, data entry goes to a member user, review to a supervisor and approval and e-file to the admin, with action tracking behind it. The pricing page does not say whether forms filed for different clients count toward one set of volume tiers, so ask sales before assuming a firm reaches the lower per-form rates sooner than a single client would (checked 11 October 2026).
The eDelivery portal requests each recipient's consent, tracks the election and posts the copy in a password-protected portal; recipients can reach the current and prior two tax years. Print and mail goes by USPS, and foreign mail is $4.99 a form. Orders in the last five days of filing season add a $1 rush fee per piece.
An agent signed in through OAuth can create payers and recipients, import and validate forms, fetch PDFs and submit 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC filings with payment. The docs recommend human confirmation of tool calls. Other forms can be prepared through the agent and filed in the web app.
States in the combined federal/state program are covered by the federal e-file price. For the rest, Tax1099 files directly with the state at $2.99 a form and prepares state reconciliation forms at $4.99 a payer. Its state pages list requirements and tax year 2026 deadlines for every state and the District of Columbia.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
No annual fee. Core e-filing with the IRS, SSA and combined federal/state program, corrections, scheduling, USPS address checks, integrations, audit trails and four years of storage. No team creation.
Everything in Essential plus multi-user access, team creation and 250 TIN match credits. Renews automatically each year.
Everything in Teams plus API access, workflow management, user management, action tracking and notice management. SSO is available for a one-time implementation fee.
Per-form tiers stop at 1,000 forms; above that the pricing page says to contact sales. The enterprise quote form offers volume bands from 501 forms to 1,000,001 and above.
First 20 forms $2.99 each, 21 to 150 $2.59, 151 to 250 $1.99, 251 to 500 $1.42, 501 to 1,000 $0.72. Each tier is billed at its own rate.
First 25 forms $3.10 each, 26 to 150 $2.99, 151 to 500 $1.99, 501 to 1,000 $0.72.
First form $5.99, forms 2 to 10 $5.24, 11 to 100 $4.99, 101 to 500 $3.99, 501 to 1,000 $1.99.
Withholding returns for payments to foreign persons. Above 1,000 forms by quote.
Puerto Rico informative returns. Above 1,000 forms by quote.
Form 990 and 990-T $99.99 each, 990-EZ $59.99, 990-PF $129.99. Form 990-N is free.
Flat pricing with no volume tiers.
Paper filing for US Virgin Islands and Guam wage statements.
The home page advertises prices as low as $0.72 per form (checked 10 October 2026). The tier table bills each band at its own rate, so 1,000 Forms 1099-NEC cost about $1,311, or $1.31 a form (Audit Friendly estimate). The pricing page's own worked example for 600 forms totals $1,235.00, while its tier table and calculator script give $1,022.50 for the same volume. Run the calculator for the exact count and keep a screenshot. Above 1,000 forms the price is a quote.
The terms (read 10 October 2026) say the Teams or Scale subscription renews automatically each year and the renewal fee is charged to the saved payment method. Cancelling means emailing support at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Prepaid credits expire 12 months after purchase and are non-refundable, and Zenwork states it has no duty to warn before they lapse. Fees in a quote can change once every 12 months on 30 days notice, and for inflation at any time on written notice.
The contact page (10 October 2026) lists email, live chat on weekdays from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM Central with 24/7 cover in tax season, and a phone number labelled Zenwork AI Assist. The service level agreement promises a response within a commercially reasonable time and sets no time target. On Trustpilot, 12 percent of 488 reviews are one star (reported), and Trustpilot's own review summary notes difficulty reaching a real person and problems with the online chat (checked 11 October 2026). The vendor's site shows 4.9 out of 5 from 23,416 reviews without naming where those reviews were collected.
The developer portal at developer.tax1099.com opens on a sign-in screen (10 October 2026), and the marketing page offers a demo request in place of documentation. The API license agreement describes test accounts and a key assigned to each integrated application, and lets Zenwork revoke a key that puts undue technical stress on the platform; no numeric rate limit is published. The pricing page lists API access only on the $349 a year Scale plan. TaxBandits, by comparison, publishes its API docs, a free sandbox and SDKs.
The MCP documentation (10 October 2026) lists validate, import and edit tools for twelve form types and submit tools for two. The 11 December 2025 launch release describes full support for 94x, W-2, TIN checks and W-9 handling by prompt, which the tool list does not show. Setup is written for Cursor only. The submit tools take payment and send a return to the IRS, so keep human confirmation switched on, as the docs advise.
Zenwork's terms (read 10 October 2026) state that it does not guarantee error-free service, that the customer is solely responsible for the accuracy of its data, and that Zenwork is not liable for penalties or interest from late or inaccurate submissions during a delay or investigation. The vendor's own compliance page repeats that the IRS holds the filer accountable. After termination, access to retrieve data may be allowed for up to 60 days, after which data may be irretrievably deleted. Export payer and recipient copies before cancelling.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: Yes. Zenwork announced the Tax1099 MCP server on 11 December 2025, and the documentation at tax1099.com/ai/mcp gives the endpoint https://mcp.tax1099.com/mcp. On 10 October 2026 that endpoint answered with an OAuth challenge and published authorization metadata, and its public health check reported version 1.0.0. The server is absent from the official MCP registry, and a GitHub organization named Zenwork Inc shows no public repositories.
Scope: Read and write. The docs list 64 tools. Twelve form types (1099-NEC, MISC, INT, DIV, B, G, K and R, plus 1042-S, 1095-B, 1095-C and 1098) each get validate, get, import and edit tools. Payers and recipients get save, validate, get and delete tools. Four tools return PDFs, including W-8 and W-9 copies and the 1096 or W-3 summary. Two tools pay for and submit a filing to the IRS, for 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC. The launch release also names 94x and W-2 forms and TIN checks, which the published tool list does not show.
Turnkey: Close. The server is vendor-hosted and signs the user in through OAuth with a Tax1099 account, so nothing is installed. The setup guide covers Cursor only. The server metadata advertises a client registration endpoint, which other MCP clients rely on, yet Tax1099 documents no Claude or ChatGPT setup. The pricing page puts API access on the $349 a year Scale plan and does not say whether the MCP server follows the same rule. The REST API reference sits behind a developer login.
In-product AI: Zenwork AI Tax Assist is a chat and phone assistant that answers filing questions from IRS publications and, per the vendor, files 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC for up to 50 recipients inside the chat window. The vendor also describes an AI Co-Pilot that pre-fills forms and a Diagnostic AI that flags risks before submission, and says customer data is not used to train models. No independent account confirms how accurate these tools are, so treat their output as a draft for a reviewer.
Tax1099 began briefing auto lenders on vehicle loan interest reporting and lists a 1098-VLI e-file page; its own video notes the IRS form was still a draft.
A readiness checker shows where a 1099 process stands before the IRS retires FIRE; Tax1099 says it is IRIS-compliant and supports IRIS filing for tax year 2026 returns filed in 2027.
Practice management vendor Qount said firms can run the 1099 workflow from enrollment to submission inside Qount through Zenwork Tax1099.
Zenwork announced a partnership with the Council for Electronic Revenue Communication Advancement, the industry group that works with the IRS on e-filing, as IRIS replaces FIRE.
The vendor presented an AI Co-Pilot for form filling, a Diagnostic AI for risk checks, the MCP server and AI Assist as one package; outcome claims are the vendor's own.
Zenwork released a Model Context Protocol server so AI agents can manage, validate and file information returns by prompt, with Cursor named as the supported client.
The federal e-file price is published: $2.99 a form for the first 20, $2.59 for forms 21 to 150, $1.99 for 151 to 250, $1.42 for 251 to 500 and $0.72 for 501 to 1,000 (checked 10 October 2026). Audit Friendly estimate from those tiers: about $267 for 100 Forms 1099-NEC, $596 for 250 and $951 for 500.
Add-ons move the total. A team of two or more needs the Teams plan at $249 a year, which includes 250 TIN match credits. E-delivery is $0.50 a form and US print and mail is $1.95. A 250-form filer on Teams with e-delivery lands near $970 for the season (Audit Friendly estimate). Direct state filing, where a state needs it, adds $2.99 a form.
Above 1,000 forms the price is a quote. Vendr reported a median of $13,052 a year for Zenwork contracts across all its products, with no sample size shown, as captured on 10 October 2026 (low confidence). That is only a loose guide for an enterprise Tax1099 deal.
The Essential plan has no contract: forms are paid for as they are filed. Teams and Scale renew automatically each year, renewal fees are non-refundable, and cancelling means emailing support at least 24 hours before the renewal date (terms read 10 October 2026). Prepaid credits expire 12 months after purchase with no refund. Quoted fees can change once every 12 months on 30 days notice, and for inflation at any time on written notice.
Filed forms stay in the account: four years of storage is included on every plan, and payer and recipient copies download as CSV or PDF. After a contract ends, Zenwork may allow up to 60 days to retrieve data and may delete it after that. Arkansas law governs, with venue in Fayetteville.
Most accounts are live the same day. Sign-up is free and self-serve, with no credit card, and the finance team does the work: an admin sets up payers, imports vendors from QuickBooks, Xero, BILL or a spreadsheet, and files. Allow one to two weeks if W-9 collection and TIN matching still need doing (Audit Friendly estimate).
IT is involved only for SSO, which is a Scale feature with a one-time implementation fee, or for an API or SFTP feed. The vendor says a dedicated specialist handles migration for teams switching from another 1099 product. Start before January: the e-file deadline for 2026 Forms 1099-NEC is 1 February 2027, and mail ordered in the last five days of filing season costs an extra $1 a piece.
Yes, within limits. Tax1099 hosts its own MCP server at mcp.tax1099.com, announced on 11 December 2025. It signs the user in through OAuth and, per its docs, exposes 64 tools to create payers and recipients, import, validate and edit forms, fetch PDFs, and pay for and submit 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC filings (checked 10 October 2026).
The limits matter. Setup is documented for Cursor only. The tool list has no W-9 request, TIN match or filing-status tool and no W-2 or 94x forms. A submit call spends money and sends a return to the IRS, so run the agent with human confirmation on every tool call, as the docs recommend. Ask sales whether MCP access requires the Scale plan; the pricing page does not say.
