TaxWise is Wolters Kluwer's tax preparation software for high-volume 1040 offices and service bureaus: browser-based TaxWise Online plus a Windows desktop program, sold in published packages from $429 to $4,249 a year with bank products, Spanish forms and AI document intake.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
All four packages, the Limited per-return rates and the main add-ons (TaxWise Mobile, Expert Services and Return Retrieval) carry a public price in the Wolters Kluwer shop (checked 10 October 2026). Points come off for fees that sit outside the shop: a one-time $83 processing fee and $5 per e-signature envelope, both from the vendor's page as archived on 29 September 2026, and e-file fees the license lets the vendor change on 30 days' notice. The shop and that archived comparison table also disagree on whether UltraPro is unlimited.
TaxWise Online runs in Chrome, Edge or Safari, the trial account does not expire, and a training site offers practice returns (vendor support pages, captured May and June 2026). Expert Services at $131 to $379 covers setup and prior-year conversion from eight named packages (shop, 10 October 2026). TaxWise Desktop adds a Windows 11 install and an authenticator app.
Per the vendor's 2026 support hours article (updated 31 August 2026, read 10 October 2026), phone support runs weekdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in season, with chat 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and support cases around the clock; off season, phone drops to weekdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends close. Hours change by season, so confirm them before buying. Bilingual support in Spanish is a stated feature. Independent review evidence is thin: Techjockey shows 4.7 of 5 for support across 12 ratings.
TaxWise covers the 1040 plus Forms 1120, 1120S, 1065, 1041, 706, 709 and 990 with federal and state returns and prior-year e-file in every package (vendor page as archived on 29 September 2026). TaxWise Online itself is narrower: 1040s plus Forms 1065 and 1120-S, added in November 2024. More than 60 forms and schedules are in Spanish. The full forms and state list sits behind the support login, and no form count is published.
Every package covers unlimited users at one office and includes TaxWise Desktop (vendor page, captured 29 September 2026). Central Office Manager and a white-label program serve multi-office operators and service bureaus. What breaks first: the comparison table caps UltraPro at 2,500 returns before a $2 per-return charge, each office needs its own package, and Online and Desktop do not share returns.
The TaxWise 2025 system requirements (October 2025) require an authenticator app for multi-factor authentication in TaxWise Desktop, and the IRS lists Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting, the parent business, among the industry members of its Security Summit (IRS overview dated 2018). Hyperlinked diagnostics check e-file errors before submission. The April 2026 license supplies the software as is, with no accuracy guarantee and liability capped at twelve months of fees, and no SOC 1 or SOC 2 report appears on the public TaxWise pages checked 10 October 2026.
The connected pieces are Wolters Kluwer's own or resold: TaxWise Mobile intake, a client portal, e-signature, CCH AnswerConnect, TheTaxBook, Textellent texting and refund transfers through four bank partners. No public API, no ledger or trial balance import and no practice management connector are documented on the pages checked 10 October 2026, and returns do not move between TaxWise Online and TaxWise Desktop.
In-product AI is real: W-2 and 1099 extraction, ID scanning and in-app CCH AnswerConnect search launched 25 November 2025, and agentic review-ready drafts were announced 5 October 2026 (CPA Practice Advisor). The outside surface is empty. The MCP registry returned no TaxWise or Wolters Kluwer server on 10 October 2026, there is no public API, and the license bars sharing online account access with third parties.
Written by the Audit Friendly research team. No vendor edits, no sponsored placement.
TaxWise is the product Wolters Kluwer files under tax preparer software, apart from CCH Axcess Tax and CCH ProSystem fx Tax for accounting firms. The purchase is a per-office annual package: 100 returns for $1,849, 400 for $3,899 or UltraPro for $4,249, each with unlimited users and both TaxWise Online and TaxWise Desktop (published, checked 10 October 2026). Around the return engine sit the things a storefront office lives on: refund transfers through four bank partners, more than 60 forms and schedules in Spanish, a client intake app and a white-label program for service bureaus.
The catch is the seams. TaxWise Online prepares 1040s plus Forms 1065 and 1120-S; the vendor's page, as archived on 29 September 2026, describes the 1120, 1041, 706, 709 and 990 as part of TaxWise Desktop and states that the two programs do not share returns. The shop calls UltraPro unlimited, while the comparison table on that archived page says it includes 2,500 returns and bills $2 for each one after that. There is no public API, no MCP server, no SOC report on the public pages checked and no accuracy guarantee: the license supplies the software as is and caps liability at twelve months of fees. Fewer than 1 percent of the 1,808 CPAs in the 2026 Journal of Accountancy survey used it, so peer evidence from CPA firms is thin.
Before signing, get four things in writing. First, whether UltraPro is unlimited or 2,500 returns. Second, every fee outside the package: the $83 one-time processing fee and $5 per e-signature envelope shown on the vendor's page as archived on 29 September 2026, add-ons such as TaxWise Mobile at $589, and any e-file or per-filing fee, which the license lets the vendor change on 30 days' notice. Third, whether AI document intake requires the TaxWise Mobile add-on. Fourth, how long online returns stay retrievable after the subscription ends on the last day of November, because the license promises only reasonable efforts for one year.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
UltraPro puts every preparer in the office on one package with federal and state returns and e-file included. Interview mode suits seasonal staff and forms mode suits veterans. Confirm the 2,500-return line in the vendor's comparison table (archived 29 September 2026) before counting on unlimited volume.
Preparers can display forms and diagnostics in Spanish and print the client copy in the client's preferred language. The vendor also lists bilingual support and a Spanish-language Learning Portal for TaxWise Online.
Refund transfers run through Santa Barbara Tax Products Group, Republic Bank, Refund Advantage and EPS, with refund advances and pre-acknowledgement loans available in TaxWise. The vendor's refund transfer page, as archived on 29 September 2026, describes PayLater through Pathward as the lower-cost route at $15 per return and says it cannot be combined with refund transfer products.
A custom link sends taxpayers through an interview and document upload, and the data lands in TaxWise Online. Since November 2025 the vendor says Expert AI extracts W-2 and 1099 data and scans IDs from those uploads. The preparer reviews each suggested value before it posts.
Limited costs $429 a year and bills $39 per individual return and $61 per business return. By Audit Friendly's arithmetic the 100 Package becomes cheaper at about 37 individual returns. Limited does not bundle CCH AnswerConnect research.
Service bureaus can white-label TaxWise Desktop or TaxWise Online, set their own resale price and manage sub-offices in the cloud-based Central Office Manager, according to the vendor's service bureau page as archived on 26 August 2026. The training figure is one customer's quote on that page and has no independent measurement behind it. Reseller status is arranged through the vendor's service bureau team, and terms are by quote. The standard license on its own forbids service bureau use.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Pay-per-return package for occasional and seasonal preparers. No CCH AnswerConnect research is bundled.
100 individual 1040 returns with unlimited users at one office. Business returns are billed per return; the shop states the $61 rate only on the Limited package, so confirm the rate for this one. Includes CCH AnswerConnect Master Tax Guide Online, per the vendor's package table as archived on 29 September 2026.
400 federal and state returns in any mix of individual and business, unlimited users at one office. Includes CCH AnswerConnect Master Tax Guide Online.
The shop says unlimited individual and business returns (checked 10 October 2026). The vendor's package table, as archived on 29 September 2026, said 2,500 total returns, then $2 per return, and listed Master Tax Guide Plus. Get the return limit in writing.
Listed on every package in the vendor's package table as archived on 29 September 2026; the shop pages did not show it on 11 October 2026, so confirm the amount on the order confirmation. The refund policy treats shipping and processing fees as non-refundable.
The April 2026 license says every package can use e-signature, for 1040 returns only, billed weekly for each envelope sent rather than for each return or signature. The $5 amount comes from the vendor's page as archived on 29 September 2026, so confirm it; an envelope can hold one or more documents.
Client intake by link: taxpayers answer an interview and upload documents that flow into TaxWise Online. The shop ties automated document extraction and referral links to this add-on.
A scheduled session with a TaxWise representative for installation or online setup plus prior-year return conversion. Excluded from the refund policy.
Assisted conversion of prior-year returns from Drake, CrossLink, Lacerte, ProSeries, UltraTax, TaxSlayer Pro Classic, TaxAct or ATX.
Assisted installation of TaxWise Desktop or setup of TaxWise Online, without conversion.
Backup service that restores the current and two prior years of returns. The license describes it as a product for TaxWise Desktop customers.
Fee-from-refund option described on the vendor's refund transfer page as archived on 29 September 2026: Pathward deducts $15 from the preparer's fee on each return, and it cannot be combined with refund transfer products. Confirm the current fee at bank enrollment.
The shop page for UltraPro describes unlimited federal and state individual and business returns (checked 10 October 2026). The package table on the vendor's TaxWise page, captured 29 September 2026, says UltraPro includes 2,500 total returns and charges $2 per return above that. For an office filing 4,000 returns that would be $3,000 on top of the $4,249 package (Audit Friendly arithmetic). Ask which statement the order confirmation follows, because the refund policy ranks the order confirmation above the license and the policy itself.
The vendor states that returns e-filed in TaxWise Online stay in TaxWise Online, returns e-filed in TaxWise Desktop stay in Desktop, and the two do not share access to returns (vendor page, captured 29 September 2026). TaxWise Online gained Forms 1065 and 1120-S in November 2024; the vendor describes the 1120, 1041, 706, 709 and 990 as part of TaxWise Desktop, which needs Windows 11. A mixed practice ends up with two client lists, two backups and two places to look during an IRS inquiry.
The CCH Small Firm Services Refund Policy (version 04/2026) refunds the annual license fee only if the request arrives within seven calendar days of the software being made available. No refund is given if the software has been used to create or e-file a return or the registration code has been used. Expert Services, third-party products and processing fees are excluded, and purchases under a multi-year agreement follow that agreement instead. Use the free trial, which does not expire, to test before paying.
Section 8.3 of the April 2026 license provides the products, support and electronic filing as is, without warranty, and says the customer bears the entire risk as to quality and performance. Section 8.4 caps total liability at the fees paid in the twelve months before a claim. No calculation accuracy guarantee or penalty reimbursement appears in the license. Firms that want that cover need their own professional liability policy to carry it.
The vendor's comparison table, as archived on 29 September 2026, lists a one-time $83 processing fee on every package, and a 2025 promotion cited processing fees of up to $135. The same archived page puts e-signature at $5 per envelope sent, and the license confirms it is billed per envelope. The license says e-file and other per-filing fees can change at any time on 30 days' notice and are charged at the rate in force when a return is filed. Late payments can draw 1.5 percent per 30 days and a fee to reinstate access. Get the full fee list on the order confirmation.
Section 2.5.3 of the April 2026 license says the vendor will use reasonable efforts to retain data submitted to its online servers for at least one year after the year of submission, then follows its internal practices. It makes the customer responsible for backing up, and retrieval on request can carry a fee. The subscription itself ends on the last calendar day of November of the following tax year. Keep PDF copies of every filed return and ask how prior-year TaxWise Online returns are reached after a lapse.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No. Wolters Kluwer publishes no MCP server for TaxWise. The official MCP registry returned zero servers for a search on taxwise and zero for wolters kluwer on 10 October 2026, and GitHub repository searches for a TaxWise or Wolters Kluwer MCP server returned nothing. The Wolters Kluwer developer portal describes CCH Axcess APIs behind a login and does not name TaxWise.
Scope: There is nothing for an outside agent to read or write. The vendor's November 2024 release says TaxWise Online uses integrations and APIs with additional vendors, which describes partner plumbing such as texting, payments and bank products. No documentation, keys or sandbox are offered to customers. The April 2026 license also bars sharing online account access information with third parties, which is the clause to raise before any outside tool signs in.
Turnkey: Not applicable for agents. The in-product AI is turnkey in a narrower sense: it ships inside TaxWise Online and TaxWise Mobile and needs no configuration project.
In-product AI: Wolters Kluwer launched TaxWise Online powered by Expert AI on 25 November 2025 with W-2 and 1099 extraction from TaxWise Mobile, ID scanning and CCH AnswerConnect search inside the return. On 5 October 2026 it said agentic preparation is available: the product classifies documents, maps the data and produces a review-ready draft, and the preparer accepts or rejects each suggestion. The vendor claims client data collection falls from 30 to 60 minutes to roughly 5 to 15 minutes on a common 1040; no independent account confirms that.
Wolters Kluwer said TaxWise now organizes client documents, extracts and maps tax data, flags issues and produces a review-ready draft return, with the preparer approving every return before filing.
The CCH Small Firm Services license (PDF file dated 4 May 2026) and refund policy (PDF file dated 18 May 2026) both carry version 04/2026; neither states a publication day. The refund window is seven calendar days and the liability cap is twelve months of fees.
The description of an official product video posted 7 January 2026 says every TaxWise Online package includes TaxWise Desktop at no extra cost with unlimited users, and names built-in Payroc client payments. It does not say when the bundling began.
The release added W-2 and 1099 extraction from TaxWise Mobile, AI ID scanning, in-app CCH AnswerConnect search, a Visual Line Guide and referral links. Time savings in the release are vendor claims.
The TaxWise 2025 system requirements list Windows 11, end TaxWise support for Windows 10 as of 14 October 2025 and require an authenticator app for multi-factor authentication in TaxWise Desktop 2025.
TaxWise publishes its prices. On 10 October 2026 the shop listed four packages per office per year: Limited at $429 plus $39 per individual return and $61 per business return, the 100 Package at $1,849, the 400 Package at $3,899 and UltraPro at $4,249.
A solo preparer filing 60 individual returns would pay about $2,769 on Limited (Audit Friendly estimate: $429 plus 60 returns at $39), so the 100 Package is cheaper from roughly 37 returns upward. An office filing 300 returns fits the 400 Package, and UltraPro costs $350 more than that.
Budget for the extras: TaxWise Mobile at $589 and optional Expert Services at $131 to $379 in the shop, plus a one-time $83 processing fee and $5 per e-signature envelope, both from the vendor's page as archived on 29 September 2026. That archived comparison table also says UltraPro includes 2,500 returns and bills $2 per return beyond that, so confirm all three on the order confirmation.
The subscription is annual and tied to the tax season. Under the April 2026 license it runs from the order date to the last calendar day of November of the following tax year, for one designated office. The 2026 refund policy gives seven calendar days from when the software is made available, and nothing once a return is created or e-filed.
On data, the license says the vendor will use reasonable efforts to keep what you submit to its online servers for at least one year after the year of submission, and that backing up is the customer's responsibility. Retrieval on request can carry a fee. TaxWise Desktop stores returns on your own machine, and Return Retrieval ($178) restores the current and two prior years.
A practical exit plan: save a PDF client copy of every return each season, keep Desktop backups, and check the converter of the product you are moving to. Drake Tax, for example, lists TaxWise among the packages whose 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120 and 1120S data it converts (conversions page, read 11 October 2026).
Days for most offices. TaxWise Online runs in Chrome, Edge or Safari, so setup is mostly users, office defaults, bank enrollment and EFIN details. New customers receive a Client ID and a registration code by email and log in as the admin user.
TaxWise Desktop needs a Windows 11 PC and, for the 2025 program, an authenticator app for multi-factor authentication. TaxWise support for Windows 10 ended on 14 October 2025.
An office can do it alone with the Learning Portal in English or Spanish, a training site with practice returns and a trial that does not expire. Or it can buy Expert Services: $131 for setup, $262 for conversion or $379 for both. Conversion covers prior-year returns from Drake, CrossLink, Lacerte, ProSeries, UltraTax, TaxSlayer Pro Classic, TaxAct and ATX.
No. TaxWise has no public API and no MCP server. On 10 October 2026 the official MCP registry returned nothing for TaxWise or Wolters Kluwer, and the Wolters Kluwer developer portal describes CCH Axcess APIs only.
The AI that exists is inside the product. Expert AI reads W-2s, 1099s and IDs, searches CCH AnswerConnect and, per the 5 October 2026 announcement, assembles a review-ready draft return. The preparer accepts or rejects each suggestion before it posts.
Claude can still help around the edges: reviewing PDFs a preparer exports, drafting client letters or checking a draft against source documents. The license bars sharing online account access with third parties, so ask Wolters Kluwer before pointing any outside tool at a live login.
