Avalara is a sales and use tax platform (AvaTax calculation, Managed Returns filing and exemption certificate management) for growing and mid-market companies that collect tax in many U.S. states, with VAT, 1099 and property tax sold as separate products.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
Avalara lists 1,400+ signed partner integrations and publishes connector pages for NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks Online, Xero, Business Central, SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Cloud ERP, Workday, Acumatica, Salesforce, Shopify and Stripe (checked 4 October 2026). The catch is packaging: the published Core plans support only 18 systems, so ERP connectors mean a Custom quote.
AvaTax covers 900K+ tax rules across 12,000+ U.S. jurisdictions and 190+ countries (AvaTax page, checked 4 October 2026), and Select plans cover Canadian GST/HST, PST and QST. Coverage extends to consumer use tax, communications, excise, lodging and 1099 through separate products. Product taxability depth comes from a tax code catalog plus AI tax code recommendations exposed in the API and MCP server.
Hosted MCP servers at mcp.avalara.com cover AvaTax, Returns, exemption certificates, e-invoicing, registrations and tax content, with write tools such as calculate_tax, create_certificate and approve_filings_returns (developer docs, checked 4 October 2026). OAuth with dynamic client registration makes most of them turnkey. Aviator agents were unveiled on 23 September 2026 and reach existing customers at renewal, so in-product agent claims remain vendor-claimed.
Avalara says it processed 54B+ transactions in a year and runs active-active across AWS, Azure, GCP and OCI (Aviator and Returns pages, checked 4 October 2026). Multi-entity management and high volumes move to the Custom plan. For most buyers the first pressure point is cost, because fees scale with states, transactions and products.
The Avalara Trust Center lists product-level SOC 1 Type 2 reports (AvaTax period to 30 April 2026, bridge letter dated 10 July 2026), a SOC 2 Type 2 report and ISO 27001, checked 4 October 2026. As one of five SST Certified Service Providers, Avalara says it takes liability for calculation errors in participating SST states. The general terms cap liability at 12 months of fees, and Aviator's audit log claims are still the vendor's own.
Standard Implementation is included and Guided Implementation or Managed Support are paid upgrades (support plans page). Avalara says many QuickBooks Online users go live the same day, and a NetSuite customer quoted on its site was live within a week. Vendr reports implementation fees of $20,000 to $50,000 or more for complex ERP deployments, and product tax code mapping is customer work unless Managed Support is bought.
Avalara now publishes per-state prices for sellers under $50M revenue ($79 or $69 per state a month) plus set fees for registration ($403 per location) and license guidance (from $119), checked 4 October 2026. Everything above $50M, ERP connectors and add-on products are quoted. The terms allow renewal increases with 60 days' notice, and Vendr reports overage rates of 2 to 3 times the base per-transaction rate.
The support plans page lists Standard support as online cases with a 24-hour first response; live chat and phone start at Priority (8 hours), and a 1-hour 24/7 SLA, a technical account manager and a sandbox need Enterprise Support (checked 4 October 2026). The Trustpilot profile at avalara.com is listed as Avalara Europe, based in Brighton, United Kingdom, and showed 3.1 from 506 reviews from several countries, so it is not a clean read on U.S. support. Anrok's site claims about 40 percent of its mid-market customers switched from Avalara, citing support among the reasons; that is a competitor's claim.

You are buying three things that work together: AvaTax for calculation across 12,000+ U.S. jurisdictions, Managed Returns for preparing, filing and paying returns, and exemption certificate management. Sellers under $50M in revenue can now buy published plans at $79 per state a month, or $69 with Streamlined Sales Tax services (checked 4 October 2026). Above $50M, or on an ERP like NetSuite, it is a Custom quote, and Vendr reports a $16,869 median annual contract across 756 purchases (page updated February 2026). The engine sits behind 1,400+ signed partner integrations and a product-level SOC 1 Type 2 report.
The catch is how the bill grows. Published plans charge per state, so a seller registered in 12 states pays $9,588 a year on Core Compliance before add-ons (Audit Friendly estimate). The published plans connect to 18 systems; NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Business Central, SAP and Oracle sit in the quoted Custom plan. Avalara's terms let it raise fees at every renewal with 60 days' notice, and the notice can arrive as an invoice. Standard support is online cases with a 24-hour first response; phone and chat cost extra. Public review evidence on U.S. service is limited: the Trustpilot profile at avalara.com is listed as Avalara Europe, based in Brighton, United Kingdom, and showed 3.1 from 506 reviews from several countries on 4 October 2026.
Before signing, get in writing: a renewal increase cap, the overage rate per transaction compared with your base rate, which connector and plan covers your ERP, the support tier and whether a sandbox is included, how Returns is charged per state and filing frequency, and the export format and fee for your transaction and filing history after termination. If you sell remotely into SST states, ask Avalara to confirm eligibility state by state, since state funding only covers qualifying volunteer sellers.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
AvaTax uses address geolocation to find the jurisdictions on each line and applies product tax codes and exemptions in real time. It also calculates on credit memos. Through connectors such as the QuickBooks integration, results write back to the source system.
Managed Returns prepares returns from AvaTax data, files them, remits the tax and handles state notices. Customers grant filing authority and add registration details per location. Avalara claims 99.95 percent accuracy on those filings; no independent figure was found.
Exemption Certificate Management requests certificates from customers by email, mail or a web portal, then scans them for missing or wrong fields. Expired or invalid certificates are flagged by jurisdiction. In a Forrester study Avalara commissioned, the composite customer cut certificates filed with errors by 95 percent.
Avalara is one of five SST Certified Service Providers. Qualifying volunteer sellers can have calculation, filing, remittance and certificate services paid by participating states, and Avalara takes liability for calculation errors there. Eligibility depends on physical presence, payroll and property in each state.
Nexus monitoring tracks transaction activity against each state's thresholds and alerts before a new registration is needed. It is included in both published Core plans. Registration itself is a separate set-fee service at $403 per location.
The AvaTax MCP server exposes tools for calculating tax, reading transactions and companies, reading and creating nexus records, validating addresses and recommending tax codes. It authenticates with OAuth against an Avalara account. A sandbox environment is available for testing.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
For sellers under $50M revenue. AvaTax calculation, Managed Returns filing and remittance, nexus monitoring in 50 states, AvaTax Exemptions, 18 supported systems.
For sellers under $50M revenue that qualify as SST volunteer sellers. Everything in Core Compliance plus state-funded services in up to 25 SST states, with Avalara as audit liaison.
For $50M+ revenue, multi-entity or advanced needs. Full product range, all 1,400+ signed partner integrations, and access to support levels up to a 1-hour SLA; confirm whether the quote includes them.

Avalara says it is initially delivered at no additional cost, reaching existing customers at their next AvaTax or Returns renewal after general availability.
Core Compliance costs $799 per state a year on annual billing (published, checked 4 October 2026). A seller registered in 12 states pays $9,588 a year before registrations, extra support or add-on products (Audit Friendly estimate). The SST plan lowers the rate to $699, but state funding only applies to qualifying sellers in participating states. Model the bill on next year's expected registration footprint.
Avalara's pricing FAQ lists 18 systems for the Core plans, including QuickBooks Online, Shopify, Amazon, Stripe and Sage 50 (checked 4 October 2026). NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Business Central, SAP, Oracle and Workday connectors are not on that list, so ERP buyers need a Custom quote. Ask for the connector, its license and any premium connector fee as separate order lines. Vendr reports premium connector fees of $5,000 to $15,000 a year for custom or legacy systems.
Avalara's general terms (legal.avalara.com, checked 4 October 2026) let it raise fees at each renewal if it gives 60 days' notice, which may be an invoice. Subscriptions auto-renew, and non-renewal needs 30 days' written notice. Expiring discounts do not count as a fee increase. Vendr reports renewal increases of 3 to 10 percent as common, so negotiate a cap at signing.
The support plans page lists online case submission only on Standard, with live chat and phone from Priority (8-hour response) and a 1-hour 24/7 SLA, technical account manager and sandbox on Enterprise Support (checked 4 October 2026). Prices for those tiers are not published. If month-end filing deadlines matter, price Priority or Enterprise Support into the first year.
The general terms give customers ten days after termination to retrieve data at no cost. After that, a written request within 60 days gets limited access or an export file in a format Avalara chooses, subject to its standard export fees. Avalara has no obligation to return data requested later. Export transaction, liability and filing history before the term ends.
Avalara's NetSuite FAQ says usage is measured annually and unused transactions do not roll over (checked 4 October 2026). The terms make customers either pay an overage charge or move up a tier when they exceed a usage tier. Vendr reports overage rates of 2 to 3 times the effective base rate. Size the tier with seasonal peaks in mind.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: Yes. Avalara runs hosted MCP servers at mcp.avalara.com for AvaTax, Returns, Exemption Certificate Management, E-Invoicing and Live Reporting, Tax Registrations and Business Licenses, Tax Content, Cross-Border and its developer docs. The AvaTax server was published to the official MCP registry on 11 June 2026, and the endpoint is live behind OAuth sign-in through Avalara Identity (checked 4 October 2026). The docs server only searches documentation and the Cross-Border server looks up Avalara's tariff library; the others reach customer data.
Scope: Read and write. The AvaTax server can calculate tax (which creates a transaction), read transactions and companies, read and create nexus records, validate addresses and return AI tax code recommendations. The certificate server can create and update certificates and customers and upload certificate images. The Returns server reads filings, liability reports and filing calendars, submits filing calendar requests and can approve or reject a period's filings.
Turnkey: Mostly. AvaTax and certificate servers use OAuth sign-in with an Avalara account, and Avalara's identity server publishes a dynamic client registration endpoint, so an MCP client can connect without an admin building an app. Two servers are exceptions: Returns needs a JWT generated from the account license key plus a header that picks one tax domain per request, and Tax Registrations and Business Licenses needs client credentials issued by Avalara partner support. An active subscription is required, and the docs show setup for Cursor, VS Code and Claude Code.
In-product AI: Avalara unveiled Aviator, an agent hub led by the Avi orchestrator agent, on 23 September 2026. Avalara says Aviator maps products to tax codes, validates certificates, drafts custom tax rules and simulates them on past transactions, with human approval before filings or rule changes. Existing customers get it at their next AvaTax or Returns renewal after general availability, and the Trust Center lists an Aviator beta document. Avalara's claim of 99.95 percent accuracy on 6.6M+ returns filed in 2025 is the vendor's own.
Announced at the CRUSH conference: Avi orchestrates lead agents for research, certificates and returns, with human approval for critical actions. Avalara says existing customers get it at no additional cost.
Avalara published hosted MCP servers for AvaTax, then Returns, Tax Content, Business Licenses, Classification, Cross-Border and E-Invoicing between June and July 2026. Most use OAuth sign-in; Returns needs a JWT and Business Licenses needs client credentials from Avalara partner support.
Sarrazin previously ran Udemy and was chief product and technology officer at UKG. The release puts Avalara's annual revenue above $1.3 billion.
Versori builds connectors with agentic AI workflows and now operates as Versori by Avalara. Deal terms were not disclosed.
All proceeds bought shares from existing shareholders, and Vista Equity Partners remains majority owner. No new money went to the company.
Reuters reported the filing, three years after Vista Equity Partners took Avalara private in an $8.4 billion deal including debt. No pricing or listing appears in Avalara's newsroom as of 4 October 2026.
Under $50M in revenue, Avalara publishes per-state plans: $79 per state a month for Core Compliance or $69 with SST services, or $799 and $699 per state a year (checked 4 October 2026). A company registered in eight states would pay about $6,392 a year on annual Core Compliance (Audit Friendly estimate).
Above $50M, or if you need an ERP connector outside the 18 supported systems, Avalara quotes a Custom plan. Vendr reports a $16,869 median annual contract across 756 purchases (page updated February 2026). A Forrester study Avalara commissioned modeled $274,000 in total costs over three years for a $300M revenue composite customer.
Agreements run 12 months by default and renew automatically for the same length. Non-renewal needs at least 30 days' written notice, and Avalara may raise fees at each renewal with 60 days' notice (legal.avalara.com, checked 4 October 2026).
After termination you get ten days to retrieve data at no cost. A written request within 60 days gets limited access or an export file in a format Avalara chooses, subject to its standard export fees. Pull transaction detail, liability reports and filing confirmations before the term ends; the Returns MCP server and API can also download liability reports and filing attachments.
Avalara does not publish a single timeline. It says many QuickBooks Online users validate sample invoices and go live the same day, and a NetSuite customer on its site was live within a week. ERP projects with product tax code mapping, certificate migration and returns setup take weeks to a few months (Audit Friendly estimate).
Standard Implementation is self-led with implementation agents available weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Guided Implementation adds configuration review and test validation, and Managed Support has Avalara configure and maintain the setup. Complex ERP projects often use a Certified Implementer; Vendr reports $20,000 to $50,000 or more in fees for those.
Yes, through Avalara's hosted MCP servers. With OAuth sign-in, an agent can calculate tax, read transactions, read and create nexus records, validate addresses, get tax code recommendations and manage exemption certificates and customers. The Returns server, connected with a JWT from the license key, can read filings and liability reports and approve or reject filings.
Keep approvals with people. Filing approval and certificate changes are write actions with compliance consequences, and Avalara's own Aviator design requires explicit human sign-off for return submissions and exemption approvals.
