Vertex is an enterprise indirect tax engine (O Series, run as Vertex Cloud, on-premise or at the edge) that calculates sales tax and VAT inside SAP, Oracle, Workday and other ERPs, with returns, exemption certificates and e-invoicing sold as modules.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
The platform page claims 20,000+ jurisdictions and 1 billion+ governed rules, and the About page cites 195+ countries and territories. Premium content covers leasing, telecom, healthcare, hospitality and oil and gas, and Returns supports 1,600+ U.S. and Canadian returns. The older O Series page still says 19,000 jurisdictions, so ask for the jurisdiction list that applies to you.
Vertex claims 150+ integrations (products page) with certified connectors for SAP including RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud (May 2025), Oracle, Workday, nine Salesforce AppExchange apps, Dynamics 365, NetSuite, Coupa, Ariba, Zuora and Shopify. Its partner directory lists no QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage Intacct connector; the Sage page covers Sage 100 and 300 only.
Vertex's trust center (trust.vertexinc.com, updated 8 April 2026) shows SOC 1 Type II and SOC 2 Type II badges plus GDPR, CCPA and EU AI Act, and its document list includes 2025 SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports and an E-Invoicing certification tagged ISO 27001:2022. The Returns product page lists role-based access, audit logs for Sarbanes-Oxley and two-factor sign-in on the hosted version. Avalara says its most widely used products are each attested under SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 and certified to ISO 27001, while the only ISO 27001 document Vertex lists covers E-Invoicing, which keeps this below the top band.
Vertex served 4,867 direct customers at 31 December 2025 (FY2025 10-K) and says more than 60 percent of the Fortune 500 use it. O Series runs in the cloud, on-premise or as edge containers on AWS, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or Azure (O Series page, checked 4 October 2026). No public API rate limits or transaction caps were found, so peak-season limits are a contract question.
Standard support covers phone weekdays 8am to 8pm Eastern and a 24/7 community portal (customer support page). The Premium Support data sheet adds Silver and Gold tiers with a Customer Success Account Manager and 40 or 80 hours of professional services a year, and only Gold includes 24/7 access to support. After-hours help on licensed software is billed at $1,500 per 24-hour period plus $310 an hour per call (license addendum), so peak-season coverage costs extra.
The Start Service data sheet (March 2026) sets packaged durations of 60 days (Bronze), 90 days (Silver, Gold) and 180 days (Platinum), and excludes SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft and Workday implementations. Vendr reports $50,000 to $200,000 or more for ERP integration work. A large partner bench (Big Four and ERP integrators) helps, but this is a services-led rollout.
In-product AI is real: Smart Categorization uses GPT-based models with human review, and the AI overview page lists configuration, product mapping, ERP workflow and text-to-tax agents. The external surface stops at REST APIs with OpenAPI specs on developer.vertexinc.com. There is no first-party MCP server in the official registry, GitHub or Vertex docs as of 4 October 2026.
No list prices appear on vertexinc.com. The FY2025 10-K describes a tiered, revenue-based pricing model, and the only published fees found sit in the license addendum for after-hours enhanced support: $1,500 per 24-hour period plus $310 an hour per call. Vendr's public page (47 purchases, median $40,297, checked 4 October 2026) is the main outside benchmark.

You are buying the O Series tax engine and the content behind it: rates and rules for 20,000+ jurisdictions in 195+ countries and territories, wired into your ERP through certified connectors. SAP and Oracle are home turf: Vertex counts 25+ years and 1,000 joint customers with SAP and 2,000+ shared customers with Oracle. Returns, Certificate Center and e-invoicing (built on ecosio, bought in August 2024) are separate modules.
The catch is cost and effort. Nothing is priced in public. The FY2025 10-K describes a tiered, revenue-based pricing model, and Vendr's median across 47 Vertex purchases was $40,297 a year when checked on 4 October 2026. Packaged implementations run 60 to 180 days and leave out SAP, Oracle and Workday projects, which are scoped separately. The AI work lives inside the product; there is no MCP server, so an outside agent needs custom code.
Before signing, get these in writing: the revenue or volume tier and what happens when you cross it, a renewal cap (Vendr reports 10 to 15 percent yearly increases on annual contracts), which content packs and countries are included, a fixed-fee statement of work for implementation, and your right to export transaction and returns history at exit.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
One O Series engine answers tax calls from the ERP, procurement, billing and e-commerce systems so every channel applies the same rules. SAP shops add Accelerator+, which gained SAP certification for RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud in May 2025.
Smart Categorization uses GPT-based models to propose a Vertex tax category and a confidence score for each product, and a reviewer approves or changes it. It is built for U.S. retailers and does not map VAT categories today.
Indirect Tax Returns turns engine or host-system data into signature-ready returns and e-files, including Puerto Rico and Canadian GST, HST, PST and QST. Express Returns adds an optional File and Pay service where Vertex submits and remits.
Vertex e-Invoicing runs on the ecosio network bought in August 2024 and links e-invoice clearance to periodic VAT reporting. Vertex says it has since acquired Brinta for Latin American e-invoicing (article dated 7 May 2026).
Certificate Center stores, validates and renews certificates and syncs them to the engine. Vertex's Siemens story says 7 SAP systems and 3.5 million certificates moved in under 6 months; that is the vendor's account.
Forget the 40-row feature grid. Pick a finance workflow and see how this tool and its closest peers actually do it, with our verdict on who wins for whom.
Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Tax determination for sales, use, VAT and GST with standard content. The 10-K describes tiered, revenue-based pricing.
U.S. and Canada returns and e-files; Express Returns adds an optional File and Pay service where Vertex submits and remits.
Cloud exemption certificate storage, customer self-service submission and renewals; a certificate collection service is an extra add-on.
E-invoice exchange, clearance and archiving plus VAT returns, ECSLs, Intrastat and SAF-T.
Industry content (leasing, telecom, healthcare, hospitality, oil and gas), address cleansing, lat/long, VAT ID validation, edge deployment.
Bronze 60 days, Silver and Gold 90 days, Platinum 180 days; SAP, Oracle, JDE, PeopleSoft and Workday are scoped separately.
Assigned Customer Success Account Manager, faster response and 40 (Silver) or 80 (Gold) hours of professional services a year.
Phone support outside standard hours with a 60-minute response target. The $1,500 is billed per 24-hour period whether or not you call, and each call adds $310 an hour with a one-hour minimum (license addendum, checked 4 October 2026).
Phone support weekdays 8am to 8pm Eastern plus the 24/7 Vertex Community portal for articles, docs and tickets.
Vertex's FY2025 10-K describes a tiered, revenue-based pricing model, so growth can move you into a higher tier. Vendr's public page showed a $40,297 median across 47 purchases on 4 October 2026, and it reports 10 to 15 percent yearly increases for buyers on annual contracts. Ask for tier thresholds, overage terms and a renewal cap in the order form.
The Start Service data sheet (March 2026) promises 60 to 180 day packages but excludes SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft and Workday implementations and current-customer migrations. Those run as separate statements of work with Vertex or a partner. Vendr reports $50,000 to $200,000 or more for ERP integration work, so get a fixed fee before kickoff.
As of 4 October 2026 Vertex has no MCP server in the official registry or its docs, so Claude or another agent can only reach Vertex through custom code on the REST APIs. Smart Categorization covers U.S. sales tax mapping only. Avalara, by contrast, lists hosted MCP servers for AvaTax and Returns.
Vertex's FY2025 10-K says its platform supports compliance across more than 20,000 jurisdictions, matching its platform, products and AI pages checked 4 October 2026. The O Series product page still cites 19,000 jurisdictions, the figure Vertex's annual reports used through FY2022, so treat 20,000+ as the current vendor claim. Premium industry content is licensed separately. Ask for the jurisdiction and content-pack list for your footprint as a contract exhibit.
Standard phone support runs weekdays 8am to 8pm Eastern, per the customer support page. Vertex's license addendum bills enhanced after-hours support at $1,500 per 24-hour period whether or not you call, plus $310 an hour for each call with a one-hour minimum. The Premium Support data sheet puts a Customer Success Account Manager in Silver and Gold but 24/7 support access in Gold only. Size this before quarter-end and peak filing months.
Christopher Young replaced David DeStefano as CEO on 10 November 2025, and a new Chief Product and Technology Officer joined in August 2026 under an AI-first plan. Net revenue retention fell from 108 percent (June 2025) to 105 percent (June 2026), and 2026 cloud growth guidance moved from 25 percent in February to 18 percent in August. Ask how roadmap commitments are written into your contract.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: No first-party MCP server exists for Vertex as of 4 October 2026. None is listed in the official MCP registry, none appears in the Vertex developer network docs, and the newsroom has announced none. GitHub has no community MCP server for Vertex O Series either.
Scope: There is no MCP scope to describe. The public surface is REST: the O Series APIs cover tax calculation, tax configuration, transaction synchronization, tax area lookups and online commerce, and separate APIs cover Certificate Center, Smart Categorization, e-Invoicing, VAT Compliance file upload, solution reporting and payroll tax, each with OpenAPI specs.
Turnkey: Not turnkey. A developer has to wrap those APIs and manage credentials before an agent can use them. For contrast, Avalara lists hosted first-party MCP servers for AvaTax, Returns, e-invoicing and exemption certificates with OAuth sign-in.
In-product AI: Vertex says its Vertex Cloud agents include a configuration agent, a product mapping agent, ERP and workflow agents and a text-to-tax agent that writes tax rules from plain language, and a Configuration Agent for Dynamics 365 is listed in Microsoft Marketplace (November 2025). Smart Categorization proposes U.S. sales tax categories with a confidence score for a human to approve. Accuracy and time-saved outcomes are the vendor's claims.
A Vertex article dated 7 May 2026 says it recently acquired Brinta, an AI-native e-invoicing provider built for Latin America. Terms were not disclosed in the article.
Vertex announced AI for plain-language work with tax data and configurations, earlier anomaly detection and shared intelligence across returns and certificates. Availability details were not given.
The O Series Tax Engine and Indirect Tax Accelerator for Oracle ERP can be bought through Oracle Marketplace and deployed on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
Vertex says the agent detects new entities, registrations and locations in Dynamics 365 and adjusts tax configuration ahead of issues.
The former Microsoft business development chief took over as President and CEO on 10 November 2025; DeStefano became non-executive chair.
A joint product with Kintsugi, in which Vertex holds a 10 percent stake, pairs Kintsugi's nexus, registration and filing automation with the Vertex engine.
Vertex does not publish prices. Its FY2025 10-K describes a tiered, revenue-based pricing model, and Returns, Certificate Center, e-invoicing and premium content are priced on top of the engine.
Vendr's public Vertex page showed a median of $40,297 a year across 47 purchases when checked on 4 October 2026. Vertex's own average annual revenue per direct customer was $142,997 at 30 June 2026, about three and a half times that median.
Budget implementation separately. Vendr reports $50,000 to $200,000 or more for ERP integrations, and Vertex's published consulting terms bill a quoted flat fee per statement of work. Smaller companies are steered to Kintsugi powered by Vertex, which has its own pricing.
Cloud deals are subscriptions; on-premise deals are licenses with maintenance, which Vendr reports at 18 to 22 percent of license fees. Vendr also reports that Vertex prefers two to three year terms and that annual contracts can see 10 to 15 percent yearly increases, so negotiate a renewal cap.
For data, the O Series engine offers standard reports and data extracts, Returns offers 100+ standard reports plus audit exports, and Vertex's trust center says it deletes customer data on request. Write the export format, the post-termination access window and who runs the final extract into the contract, and pull a full returns archive before the last filing period ends.
Vertex's Start Service packages run 60 days (Bronze), 90 days (Silver and Gold) or 180 days (Platinum). In Bronze your team leads and Vertex advises; in Platinum Vertex runs the project and tests the first month of reporting, while your team keeps all tax decisions.
Those packages exclude SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft and Workday, which are scoped as custom projects with Vertex Global Professional Services or partners such as the Big Four. Plan go-live at the start of a filing period and away from quarter-end.
Not out of the box. As of 4 October 2026 Vertex has no MCP server, so an agent cannot read transactions, change rules or run returns without custom code. The documented REST APIs (O Series, Certificate Center, Smart Categorization, e-Invoicing and more) give a developer a base to build on.
Inside the product, Vertex offers AI agents for configuration, product mapping and plain-language rule writing, plus Smart Categorization for U.S. sales tax mapping. Those run in Vertex Cloud with human review, and their outcome claims are the vendor's.
