Tropic is SaaS and AI procurement for US scale-up and mid-market finance teams: price benchmarks from what Tropic says is $23 billion in managed spend, plus renewal and quote-review agents, on a headcount-priced subscription; intake and expert-run negotiations are add-ons.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
Tropic hosts a first-party MCP server at app.tropicapp.io/mcp that has been generally available as an Anthropic-verified Claude connector since 22 April 2026, with 14 listed tools (claude.com directory, read 27 September 2026). The tools read benchmarks, playbooks, contracts and insights, and the only writes are benchmark requests. A public OpenAPI spec adds read and write access to contracts, suppliers, requests, tasks and users, and in-product agents cover renewal triage, quote review, policy checks and invoice matching.
The pricing FAQ says setup typically takes 4 to 6 weeks with Tropic's in-house team and no third-party implementer, and benchmarks work on day one before any contract upload. The published onboarding plan runs six steps from contract upload to go-live (help center, March 2026). NetSuite needs a support ticket to unlock the connector, and Sage Intacct needs a Web Services developer license bought from Sage.
The pricing FAQ lists in-app support, email and a help center, with an implementation consultant during onboarding and an account manager afterward. Support runs Monday to Friday and closes on US holidays (help center, updated 20 January 2026), and Advisory Consult answers from commercial executives typically take 1 to 3 days. Tropic displays G2 badges for mid-market support, and no response-time SLA is published.
Tropic publishes a starting price of $3,083 a month based on employee count and says it charges no per-user fee (pricing page, checked 27 September 2026). Intake and Orchestration and Full Service Negotiation are listed as add-ons without prices, and the implementation fee is unpublished. Vendr shows a $42,500 median, but from only 3 purchases.
Dynamic approval routing sends requests to IT, legal or security by policy, AI compliance checks validate contracts against a company's own rules, and audit logs record every change to requests, contracts and POs (help center, read 27 September 2026). AI Invoice Match compares forwarded invoices with contracts and requests. Tropic announced a SOC 2 report in July 2023, but its trust portal was bot-blocked, the MSA says the platform is not HIPAA compliant, and it offers no 1099, VAT or e-invoicing handling.
Tropic reports 500+ customers and $23 billion in spend under management, and says its enterprise base grew more than 40 percent year over year (release of 28 July 2026, vendor-stated). Multi-currency contracts and requests, and NetSuite OneWorld subsidiaries, are supported per the help center. What limits it first is scope: the intelligence covers SaaS, AI and technology suppliers only, G2 data puts about 86 percent of users in mid-market companies, and every listed subprocessor is US-hosted.
NetSuite gets a SuiteApp that pulls transactions by subsidiary and GL account and creates POs with department and GL coding, though suppliers match by name only (help center, updated 22 September 2026). QuickBooks Online asks only for read permissions on journal entries, invoices, POs and accounts, and Sage Intacct syncs spend data one way. Coupa receives requisitions, and Xero, Business Central and SAP ERP do not appear on the integration list.
Tropic does not move money, issue cards or pay suppliers. It hands work off: approved requests become NetSuite POs or Coupa requisitions, and AI Invoice Match emails its results to the AP inbox for payment in another system (help center, read 27 September 2026). Its only money-adjacent controls are the invoice-to-contract check and a sender allowlist for forwarded invoices.
Written by the Audit Friendly research team. No vendor edits, no sponsored placement.
You are buying pricing intelligence plus people. The subscription bundles price benchmarks, negotiation playbooks and supplier insight that Tropic says come from $23 billion in managed spend, a contract repository that tracks renewals, and AI agents that triage renewals and score vendor quotes. Tropic's commercial executives advise on deals, and for an add-on fee they run the whole negotiation. Tropic reports 500+ customers and says it takes no supplier kickbacks or referral commissions.
The catch is scope. Tropic covers software, AI and technology suppliers, and it moves no money: POs go to NetSuite or Coupa, and payment happens in another system. Only NetSuite gets a two-way connector; QuickBooks Online and Sage Intacct are read-only, and Xero, Business Central and SAP are not on the integration list. The published $3,083 a month is a floor, and intake workflows and full-service negotiation are unpriced add-ons. Vendr's public figures are thin: its marketplace page shows a $42,500 median from 3 purchases, and its older buyer guide shows a $20,000 average from 2 deals (checked 27 September 2026). Vertice, a direct competitor, announced on 1 June 2026 that it had acquired Vendr.
Get these in writing before signing: the headcount band your quote uses and the price at the next band, the cost of each add-on and the implementation fee, how many full-service negotiations are included, a cap on renewal increases, and a data-return clause, which the public MSA lacks. Ask for the current SOC 2 report, since the public note on it dates from July 2023, and confirm the sync scope for your ERP and the support hours your team will get.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
The Proposal Review Agent extracts line items from an uploaded order form, compares them with Tropic's benchmark network and returns a savings estimate, a negotiation difficulty rating and a step-by-step script (blog, 11 March 2026). It works only for suppliers Tropic classes as global. Accuracy and savings outcomes are vendor claims.
Purchase Prep ranks contracts worth negotiating, benchmarks their prices, flags auto-renewal traps and surveys stakeholders on usage (release of 8 October 2025). A lean finance team gets a shortlist in place of a full calendar. The renewal count and savings rates are Tropic's own figures.
AI Consumption Management reads usage through read-only admin keys, refreshes daily and compares consumption with the contracted commitment by model, user and API key (19 August 2026). Alerts go out by email or Slack when spend runs off pace. Other AI suppliers are promised later.
Full Service Negotiation puts a category-specialist commercial executive on the deal, who handles supplier communication, documents and terms. Under the MSA, Tropic acts only as a limited agent and cannot sign on the customer's behalf. Savings totals such as $33 million in H1 2026 are vendor-claimed.
Once an admin enables the connector, users can ask Claude for a benchmark, a supplier playbook or every contract with an auto-renewal clause, and answers draw on their own Tropic data. The tools read and analyze; they do not create requests or approve tasks. Tropic reports that 63 percent of customers have several people using it inside Claude or ChatGPT (vendor-stated).

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Benchmarks, negotiation strategies, proactive insights, Renewal and Proposal agents, expert advisory, APIs, MCP and integrations; priced by employee count.
Vendr describes a data and contract tier without intake or workflows that includes unlimited advisory and a fixed number of full negotiations (reported).
Adds intake, workflows and approvals and workflow integrations to the Basic tier, per Vendr's listing (reported).
Purchase intake portal, dynamic approval routing and request workflows, listed as an add-on on the pricing page.
Tropic's commercial executives run the supplier negotiation end to end; listed as an add-on on the pricing page.
One-time fee listed as a SKU by Vendr and waived in Tropic's Brex and J.P. Morgan partner offers.
Listed as included on the pricing page; the help center says Advisory Consult buttons appear only when that add-on is enabled for the organization.
The pricing FAQ says Tropic does not charge per user license, so any number of users can be added.
Vendr's Tropic Technologies page shows a median of $42,500 a year with a $24,500 to $64,500 range, and its page data records 3 purchases (checked 27 September 2026). Vertice announced on 1 June 2026 that it had acquired Vendr, so the benchmark now sits with a direct Tropic competitor. Tropic's own published floor of $3,083 a month, about $37,000 a year, is the firmer anchor. Ask for a quote at your exact headcount.
The pricing page lists Intake and Orchestration and Full Service Negotiation as add-ons with no price, and partner pages confirm an implementation fee by offering to waive it. Vendr's listing says the Basic tier bundles a fixed number of full negotiations, while the help center says Advisory Consult needs its own add-on (read 27 September 2026). Packaging differs by plan, so get the count of included negotiations and each add-on price in the order form.
The NetSuite SuiteApp pulls transactions by subsidiary and GL account and publishes POs with department and GL lines, but Tropic matches suppliers by name only and maps no NetSuite internal IDs (help center, updated 22 September 2026). The QuickBooks Online connector requests read permissions only, and Sage Intacct needs a Web Services developer license from Sage. Xero, Business Central and SAP ERP are not on the integration list, so spend data there arrives by CSV or API.
The public MSA bills annually in advance, makes order forms non-cancelable and fees non-refundable, and lets unused services expire at the end of the term. It has no clause on returning or exporting data at termination; the in-app Exports page covers contracts, suppliers and requests but is limited to organization Owners. Tropic may use de-identified client data for any business purpose, including AI training, and may show your logo until asked to stop. New York law governs (read 27 September 2026).
Tropic's OpenAPI spec says API keys are organization-scoped and grant owner-level permissions, and only Admins manage them (api-docs and help center, read 27 September 2026). A key used for a simple read job can also update contracts, suppliers and users. There is no API endpoint to create a purchase request, only to update one. Keep keys in a vault and rotate them after staff changes.
Tropic's company story page shows 23 percent average savings and $380 million delivered, the Vertice comparison page and platform FAQ say 21 percent, and the July 2025 release reported a 15.5 percent rate for H1 2025. Press releases from May 2026 onward cite $425 million in savings. All are vendor claims with no independent audit, so benchmark your own renewals before counting on a rate.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Inside Tropic, Purchase Prep (October 2025) ranks renewals, benchmarks prices and drafts negotiation plans, and the Proposal Review Agent (March 2026) reads an uploaded quote and returns a savings estimate, a difficulty rating and a script in about two minutes, according to Tropic. Compliance checks validate contracts against a company's own policies, AI Invoice Match compares forwarded invoices with contracts and requests, and AI Consumption Management (19 August 2026) pulls read-only usage data from OpenAI, Anthropic and Cursor each day. Savings figures such as $33 million in H1 2026 are vendor claims. The MSA says client data is not used to train AI models, but places no such limit on de-identified aggregates.
Exists: yes, first-party and vendor-hosted at app.tropicapp.io/mcp. The endpoint answers with an OAuth challenge that names app.tropicapp.io as its authorization server, which supports dynamic client registration (probed 27 September 2026). Tropic announced early access built with design partner Gusto on 19 December 2025, open to existing customers on request, and the Claude connector became generally available on 22 April 2026. It is not listed in the official MCP registry.
Scope: Claude's directory lists 14 tools: supplier intelligence, negotiation playbook, run, list and get price benchmarks, supplier products, list contracts, contract document search, expert insights, market insights, redundant spend, a manual benchmark request and a status check. Only the benchmark tools create anything; no tool submits a purchase request, approves a task or edits a contract. Below MCP, the public OpenAPI spec at app.tropicapp.io/api-docs reads and writes contracts, suppliers, requests, tasks, users and comments, but its API keys are organization-wide with owner-level permissions.
Turnkey: yes in Claude, where a workspace owner enables the directory connector once and each user signs in with a Tropic login; a paid Claude plan is required. Tropic announced a ChatGPT marketplace app on 22 May 2026, while its help article (updated 3 July 2026) still describes a Developer Mode custom app that an admin publishes to the workspace.
Who wins for whom: A NetSuite company whose requests are mostly software and AI, routed to IT, legal or security before a coded PO: Tropic. A team on Business Central, QuickBooks Online or Xero that wants Slack or Teams intake with POs pushed to the ERP: Vertice. A team that needs finance, legal, IT and security sign-off before a PO exists, then a NetSuite sync or an Ariba requisition: Zip.
Software requests, POs to NetSuite. The Intake and Orchestration add-on routes software and AI purchase requests to IT, legal or security by policy, the NetSuite SuiteApp creates POs with department and GL coding, and Coupa customers receive a requisition.
Where it loses: Scope stops at software, AI and technology suppliers, QuickBooks Online and Sage Intacct connections are read-only, suppliers match by name only, and Xero, Business Central and SAP are not on the integration list.

Chat intake, POs pushed to ERP. Requests start in a form, Slack, Teams or conversational intake and route through finance, legal, IT and security approvals, then POs with line-level GL codes push to listed ERPs including NetSuite, Business Central, QuickBooks and Xero.
Where it loses: Dimension mapping and sync frequency are not documented, procure-to-pay only launched on 24 September 2026, and goods-receipt matching is still planned, so three-way match is not yet available.

Front door that feeds the ERP. Zip routes each request through the finance, legal, IT and security steps it needs before a PO exists, then syncs vendors, POs and spend categories to NetSuite or creates the SAP Ariba requisition.
Where it loses: QuickBooks Online and Xero are not on the integration list, and sync depth for ERPs other than NetSuite is not documented publicly.

Who wins for whom: A finance team buying software and AI that wants each new vendor's contract checked by AI against its own policies, with audit logs: Tropic. A team that wants TPRM and compliance agents, with OneTrust, Vanta or Drata connected, screening a new vendor before approval: Vertice. A team that wants TIN, VAT, OFAC, D&B and bank checks plus a scored risk review before a new vendor is approved: Zip.
Policy review before software purchases. Tropic handles the review side of a new software supplier: requests route to IT, legal or security by policy, AI compliance checks test contracts against the company's own rules, and audit logs record every change.
Where it loses: Tax and payment steps fall outside its scope: Tropic moves no money, offers no 1099, VAT or e-invoicing handling, and its public SOC 2 note dates from July 2023.
Source: AF score rationale: Compliance depth 66; Tropic not-for list and verdict.
Watch: Intelligent Procurement | Tropic 1:21 · Official demo · Tropic on YouTube (official)
TPRM agents screen new vendors. Intake-to-Procure includes vendor and risk management, compliance, legal and TPRM agents check each request against policy, OneTrust, Vanta and Drata appear on its integrations page, and Vertice states SOC 2 Type 2.
Where it loses: No 1099 or e-invoicing features are described, and Vertice moves no money, so supplier bank details and payment setup belong to the ERP or AP tool that pays.
Source: AF score rationale: Compliance depth 70; Vertice pricing tiers and use cases.
Watch: Vertice | Intelligent Procurement 1:13 · Official demo · Vertice on YouTube (official)
TIN, OFAC and bank checks automated. Supplier onboarding automates TIN, VAT, OFAC, D&B and bank account checks, and AI Risk Orchestration pre-fills questionnaires from supplier data and scores each supplier against the company's own framework before approval.
Where it loses: No 1099 filing is described on the pages read, e-invoicing mandates are handled through a Sovos partnership, and Supplier Onboarding is sold as a separate quote-only module.
Source: AF score rationale: Compliance depth 82; Zip use cases and pricing tiers.

Tropic's MCP-based connector reached general availability in Claude's directory, bringing benchmarks, playbooks, compliance checks and contract insights into Claude.
Quote scoring in about two minutes, automated stakeholder surveys before renewals, and auto-generated savings logging tasks.
Tropic publishes a starting price of $3,083 a month, based on employee count, which is about $37,000 a year (Audit Friendly estimate). There is no per-user fee, and the MSA bills annually in advance (checked 27 September 2026).
Intake and Orchestration and Full Service Negotiation are add-ons without published prices, and a one-time implementation fee applies unless a partner offer waives it. Vendr shows a $42,500 median from only 3 purchases, and Vendr's Basic-to-full upgrade figure is $10,000 a year (reported).
Under the public MSA, order forms are non-cancelable, fees are non-refundable and invoiced annually in advance, and unused services expire at the end of the subscription term. Renewal terms live in each order form, so negotiate a renewal cap there.
The MSA has no data-return clause. Organization Owners can export contracts, suppliers, requests, tasks, policies and users from the Exports page, and contract documents can be exported where that feature is enabled. Add a written commitment to return all documents and extracted data at termination.
Tropic's pricing FAQ says 4 to 6 weeks end to end, with each step taking a few hours of customer time, run by Tropic's in-house implementation consultants. Benchmarks and supplier intelligence work on day one without a contract upload.
The six-step plan covers contract upload, integrations, users and departments, procurement policies and approval routing, request workflows, and launch. NetSuite requires a Tropic support ticket first, and Sage Intacct requires a Web Services developer license from Sage.
Partly. Tropic's hosted MCP server is an Anthropic-verified connector in Claude's directory, generally available since 22 April 2026. After a workspace owner enables it and users sign in, Claude can run and read price benchmarks, pull negotiation playbooks and supplier intelligence, search contract documents and list redundant spend.
The 14 listed tools do not create or approve purchase requests or edit contracts. The public REST API can edit contracts, request fields and task statuses with keys that carry owner-level permissions across the organization, but it has no endpoint to create a purchase request (API spec, read 27 September 2026). ChatGPT access runs through a Tropic app or a Developer Mode custom app, depending on which Tropic page you read.
