Numeral is a sales tax and VAT compliance service for e-commerce, software and distribution sellers: it tracks nexus, registers, calculates, files and remits, at $75 per return and $150 per state registration (published).
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
The pricing page and help center publish $75 per return, $150 per registration, $150 per backfiling and $450 per account closure, with no platform fee and month-to-month terms (checked 4 October 2026). Deactivation and handing registrations back are free per the fee article. Enterprise, global coverage and tax engine usage are quote only.
A first-party hosted MCP server at mcp.numeralhq.com is documented with 14 read tools, a tool reference, auth and limits pages and a public demo app, and it answered a live probe on 4 October 2026. Write tools for filing approval, product recategorization and certificate upload exist but are off by default. In-product AI covers product classification, certificate validation and portal monitoring, all vendor-described.
The docs list native connectors for NetSuite (a SuiteTax SuiteApp plus a read-only data sync), Business Central (AppSource extension), Acumatica, QuickBooks Online, Xero, Sage Intacct, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, Salesforce, Stripe, Shopify and marketplaces. The Sage Intacct setup authorizes Rutter as a sender alongside Numeral. Calculation writes tax back to invoices in Xero, QuickBooks and Sage Intacct, and HR systems feed physical nexus.
The help center maps five stages (onboarding, nexus study, registrations and transfers, go-live preparation, autopilot) and says most clients finish within about 30 days of kickoff. Numeral's team does the registrations and transfers, and the customer supplies documents, bank details, portal access and approvals. API integrators are told to run in test mode for at least two weeks, and NetSuite calculation requires the SuiteTax feature.
Numeral covers all US states and local jurisdictions and claims 90+ countries; its coverage map listed 91 live entries, with Brazil coming soon, on 4 October 2026. The docs list 401 product tax categories in 14 groups, and the vendor says its certificate pipeline classifies 500+ certificate types. It files through SST in most member states but is not a certified service provider, per its own help article and the SST list.
The Series C release (23 September 2026) cites 327 percent year-over-year growth in transaction volume and an expectation of 80 million+ engine transactions. The pricing page cites 140ms p95 calculation latency and the API page says rate limits can be removed on request. Platform and marketplace merchant endpoints arrived in API version 2026-01-01, though multi-entity handling is not documented in depth.
The Oneleet-hosted trust center lists SOC 2 Type 2 as compliant, with the report on request and no SOC 1 report (checked 4 October 2026). Filings move through statuses such as pending_client_approval before submission unless Autofile is on, and the guarantee page promises on-time filing and accuracy cover capped at 2x the prior 12 months of fees. Numeral is not on the SST certified service provider list, and by default its team holds the two-factor login on portals it opens for you.
The June 2026 support update states about one business hour response by chat or email, 9am to 5pm Central on weekdays, and the help center says there is no dedicated phone line. Trustpilot rates Numeral 4.2 from 116 reviews, but 17 percent are 1-star, citing slow replies, late registrations and filing errors (checked 4 October 2026). Positive reviews often name individual support staff.

What you are really buying is a managed filing service with software attached. Numeral's team registers you, files and remits your returns, and handles state mail through a virtual mailbox. The software tracks nexus, calculates tax through 40+ connectors and an API, and validates exemption certificates. Pricing is flat: $75 per return and $150 per state registration (published, checked 4 October 2026), with no platform fee and month-to-month terms on the standard plan.
The catch is service consistency. Trustpilot shows 4.2 out of 5 from 116 reviews, yet 17 percent are 1-star, and the 2026 ones describe late registrations, wrong or late filings and slow replies (checked 4 October 2026). Support runs through chat and email with a stated one business hour response in weekday Central hours, and there is no dedicated phone line; calls are booked through the chat widget. The trust center lists SOC 2 Type 2 only, and Numeral is not on the Streamlined Sales Tax certified service provider list.
Before signing, get in writing: the tax engine usage rate (the pricing FAQ names it as a cost driver but publishes no number), the SOC 2 report and any SOC 1 plan, a named contact with a response commitment for filing week, and an exit plan for portal logins, two-factor settings and filing history. Read the guarantee: accuracy cover is capped at 2x what you paid in the prior 12 months, and other liability is capped at 6 months of fees.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
Connect Shopify, Stripe, Amazon or an ERP and Numeral measures sales and transaction counts against each state's thresholds, plus physical presence from HR systems. The study also flags historical exposure, though Numeral notes that open periods often have to be confirmed in each state portal.
Numeral prepares, files and remits returns and can run on Autofile, or hold each return for client approval in the dashboard. Late periods cost $150 per backfiling, and the on-time guarantee covers penalties when a late filing is Numeral's fault.
Uploaded certificates go through an AI validation pipeline and apply to calculations for the mapped customer. The vendor claims 30 to 40 percent of migrated certificates fail validation. Budget time to re-collect certificates during the move.
A SuiteApp registers Numeral as a SuiteTax provider in NetSuite, and an AppSource extension calculates on Business Central sales documents. NetSuite calculation needs the SuiteTax feature turned on; the separate data sync is read-only.
Point Claude Code or Cursor at the hosted MCP server with a secret key and ask which filings are pending approval or which states are near nexus. Approving filings by agent needs Numeral to switch on the gated write tools.
On the Enterprise plan Numeral registers, files and remits abroad and validates VAT IDs at checkout. Its global page discloses that payment services for US customers are provided by Airwallex, a licensed money transmitter (checked 4 October 2026). Brex is the published reference for multi-country use.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Free nexus study from connected stores or billing platforms, physical and economic nexus monitoring, threshold alerts and a historical exposure audit.
Registrations, filings and remittance with Autofile and Autoregister, virtual mailbox, AI product classification, exemption certificates and native integrations, in all US states.
Everything in Professional plus coverage in 90+ countries, tax engine and API access, consults with tax lawyers and advanced reporting.
Charged when a filing deadline has already passed and Numeral files the late period.
Closing a state account on business closure, sale or loss of nexus; deactivating Numeral itself is free.
Real-time calculation through the engine and API is priced on usage; no public rate.
Collection, AI validation, expiration tracking and renewals; pricing beyond 50 certificates is not published.
Numeral's Oneleet-hosted trust center lists one framework, SOC 2 Type 2, with the final report available on request (checked 4 October 2026). A tax engine that feeds the general ledger is usually in scope for financial statement auditors, who look for a SOC 1 Type 2. Avalara and Anrok both state SOC 1 Type 2 on their own pages. Ask Numeral for a SOC 1 timeline or a bridge letter before signing if your auditors require one.
The help center says that when Numeral registers new accounts, its team is set as the two-factor contact by default, and credentials for agent accounts used in some states cannot be shared. Rhode Island and Maryland allow only one two-factor setup. Ask for forwarding of codes to your own address from day one, and a written list of every portal login to be handed back at exit (help.numeral.com, checked 4 October 2026).
Numeral's SST help article (dated 2 August 2024) says it is in the process of obtaining certified service provider status and files through SST in most member states except Vermont, Nevada and Georgia. The SST governing board list on 4 October 2026 named AccurateTax, Avalara, Avior, Sovos and TaxCloud, with Exactor listed separately, and not Numeral. Small sellers that qualify for state-funded CSP service in SST member states cannot get it through Numeral today.
Trustpilot showed 4.2 out of 5 from 116 reviews, with 74 percent 5-star and 17 percent 1-star (checked 4 October 2026). The 2026 1-star reviews cite slow replies, registrations still pending after payment, and filings that were late, wrong or submitted without review. Numeral's June 2026 support update moved requests to a structured ticket system with about one business hour response. Ask for references in your industry and state count.
The guarantee page (last updated 24 July 2023) caps accuracy cover for audit penalties and interest at 2x what you paid Numeral over the prior 12 months, and requires notice within 14 days of an audit notice. The terms of service (updated 10 June 2025) cap other liability at the greater of 6 months of fees or $100. A seller paying a few thousand dollars a year has a few thousand dollars of accuracy cover.
The pricing FAQ says cost is based on Tax Engine usage, registrations and returns, but only the filing and registration fees carry numbers. Direct API access sits in the Enterprise tier, which is custom. Get a written per-call or per-transaction rate and any volume tiers if you plan to calculate at checkout or on invoices through Numeral (numeral.com/pricing, checked 4 October 2026).
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: Yes. Numeral runs a hosted MCP server at https://mcp.numeralhq.com/mcp, documented with a quickstart, a tool reference, an authentication and limits page and a public demo app on GitHub (docs.numeral.com/mcp, checked 4 October 2026). The /ping health check returned ok and an unauthenticated initialize returned the documented 401. A separate numeral-api-docs MCP serves API documentation only and is not a data server. A third-party wrapper, io.usefulapi/numeral, appears in the public MCP registry and is not first-party.
Scope: Read only by default. The 14 documented tools read merchants, the nexus study, registrations, filings with tax, penalty and interest amounts, transactions with line-item tax, aggregated sales, products and tax categories, and exemption certificates (live mode only). Four write tools (approve_filing, reject_filing, set_product_tax_category, submit_exemption_certificate) exist but sit behind a server-side setting that is off by default; customers ask support to enable them.
Turnkey: Partly. Claude Code and Cursor connect with one config entry plus a secret API key in a bearer header. There is no OAuth flow, so Claude Desktop needs the mcp-remote bridge; Numeral's quickstart notes that Claude's Connectors setting reaches remote servers only over OAuth and has no field for a static key. A secret key grants full read access to the account, so an admin has to mint and guard it; MCP calls are rate limited per account, separately from the REST API.
In-product AI, as the vendor describes it: AI product classification, AI validation of exemption certificates (the vendor claims 500+ certificate types classified in under a minute), AI agents that check state portals daily for notices, and natural language reporting on sales tax data. The vendor claims customers cut filing and registration time by up to 80 percent; no independent account confirms it. Numeral also publishes Claude skills that teach coding agents to integrate its API.
Firms can refer clients, resell Numeral, deliver their own services on it, or advise on implementation, with premier support for partners, per the Series C announcement.
Salesforce Ventures, Geodesic, Benchmark, Mayfield, FCVC, Y Combinator and Uncork joined, taking total funding to $157 million. Numeral cited 327 percent year-over-year growth in transaction volume.
Numeral published a demo application for its MCP server at mcp.numeralhq.com on GitHub on 22 July 2026. The docs describe the server's tools as read-only, with write tools gated per account.
The release added a headless exemption certificate read API, a certificate upload API that classifies documents automatically, and tax calculation from a customer IP address.
Marketplaces and payment processors can create merchants and calculate and record tax per merchant; amount in platform calculations became a per-unit price.
Reported with Benchmark, Uncork Capital, Y Combinator and Mantis participating, for $57 million raised in total and 2,000+ brands served at the time.
On the standard plan the published fees are $75 per return and $150 per state registration, with no platform fee (checked 4 October 2026). Backfilings cost $150 each and closing a state account costs $450.
A seller registered in 10 states, with 6 monthly and 4 quarterly filers, files 88 returns a year, about $6,600 in fees, plus $1,500 once if Numeral registers all 10 states (Audit Friendly estimate). Real-time calculation through the tax engine, global coverage and API access are quoted separately.
Standard accounts are month-to-month, billed as filings occur, and can be cancelled at any time without penalty; annual and multi-year terms are optional. Numeral says it charges nothing to deactivate or to transfer registrations back to you.
The terms of service let Numeral permanently delete your content after termination, so export before you leave. Filing records sit in the dashboard, transactions and certificates can be pulled through the REST API, and the MCP server reads filings and registrations. Agree in writing which portal credentials, two-factor settings, returns and confirmations are handed back, because some agent-account credentials cannot be shared.
Numeral says most clients complete its five stages (onboarding, nexus study, registrations and transfers, go-live preparation, autopilot) within about 30 days of kickoff. Its team files registrations, takes over existing ones and prepares the first returns.
Your side supplies business documents, a remittance bank account, portal access and approvals, and connects the sales systems. API integrations should run on a test key for at least two weeks, and NetSuite calculation needs SuiteTax enabled.
Yes, for reading. Numeral's hosted MCP server at mcp.numeralhq.com exposes 14 documented read tools over nexus, registrations, filings, transactions, sales, products and certificates, authenticated with a secret API key. Claude Code and Cursor connect with one config entry; Claude Desktop needs the mcp-remote bridge because there is no OAuth.
Write tools for approving or rejecting filings, changing a product's tax category and uploading certificates exist but are off by default; Numeral's docs say to contact it to discuss enabling them for an account (checked 4 October 2026). Kintsugi's MCP is also read-only; Avalara's AvaTax MCP includes write tools such as calculate_tax.
