TaxCloud is a US sales tax service for small and mid-sized e-commerce and SaaS sellers: it tracks nexus, registers states, calculates tax and files returns, and as a Streamlined Sales Tax Certified Service Provider it files free in 24 member states for eligible remote sellers.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
Both plans, every order tier, every filing tier, the $249 registration fee, the $99 audit plan and a fee schedule are public (taxcloud.com/taxcloud-pricing and the help center, checked 10 October 2026). Marks come off for unpublished prices on guided onboarding, the success manager and the virtual mailbox, for volumes above 40,000 orders a month going to sales, and for pages that disagree on details, such as a $599 nationwide filing option that the pricing page does not list.
Phone and email support come with both plans and chat with Premium; the help center guarantees an email response within 24 business hours, with email hours of 9am to 6pm ET (checked 10 October 2026). The Shopify App Store shows 4.7 out of 5 from 104 reviews, 99 of them five-star and 5 one-star. There is no 24/7 channel, a dedicated success manager, custom onboarding and a virtual mailbox are paid add-ons, and the $99-a-month audit support excludes audit advice and representation.
A 30-day Premium trial needs no card, and TaxCloud says most businesses complete onboarding within a few days, with ERP or custom API setups taking weeks or months (SST page FAQ, checked 10 October 2026). Shopify and Stripe connect as data imports; QuickBooks Online needs a browser extension. The developer docs say there is no separate sandbox, so testing runs on a test connection against the production host, and one-to-one guided onboarding costs extra.
TaxCloud states coverage of 13,000 US jurisdictions on its site and over 11,000 in its API docs, with SST-certified rates in member states and what it calls hundreds of product tax codes (checked 10 October 2026). It files state returns nationwide, including Colorado through the SUTS program, the Colorado retail delivery fee and Washington B&O. Canada works only through Shopify and the custom API, Canadian registration tooling is marked coming soon, and nothing beyond the US and Canada is covered.
Published tiers stop at 20,000 orders a month on Starter and 40,000 on Premium; the pricing page sends larger volumes to sales (checked 10 October 2026). TaxCloud's About page cites more than 1 million orders processed monthly across 2,000+ customers, a small base next to enterprise engines. Users are free and unlimited and accountants get multi-account login, but the API page gives no numeric rate limit and the order endpoint takes one order per request.
TaxCloud is a Certified Service Provider under the Streamlined Sales Tax agreement, so its calculation system is certified by the Governing Board for 24 member states (streamlinedsalestax.org, checked 10 October 2026). Customers get a review window from the 3rd to the 11th before returns are finalized, and five user roles include a read-only Auditor. Against that, the security page names no SOC 1 or SOC 2 report and offers no SLA, the terms put filing accuracy on the customer and cap liability at the lesser of 30 days of fees or $1,000, and exemption certificates are stored as details with no validation or expiry tracking.
TaxCloud counts 13 official integrations: Shopify, Stripe, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, QuickBooks Online and Desktop, Odoo, Adobe Commerce, Magento Open Source, Miva, Chargebee, Ability Commerce and AcctVantage ERP, plus a custom API and CSV upload (integrations page, checked 10 October 2026). NetSuite, Xero and Zoho Books are marked coming soon. Shopify and Stripe are import-only, with calculation left to Shopify Tax or Stripe Tax, and Amazon, Etsy and Walmart orders arrive through Shopify or CSV.
No first-party MCP server exposes account data: the official MCP registry returns nothing for TaxCloud, and its two MCP endpoints (docs.taxcloud.com/_mcp/server with one searchDocs tool, and support.taxcloud.com/mcp with seven help-article and API-reference tools) only read documentation (checked 11 October 2026). The REST API v3 has an OpenAPI 3.0 spec and covers carts, orders, refunds, exemption certificates, a semantic TIC search and a product catalog, on Premium only, with no filing, nexus or report endpoints. TaxCloud published agent skills for coding agents on GitHub on 24 September 2026, which help a developer build on the API. In-product AI is, by TaxCloud's own account, limited to targeted help inside filing workflows.

What you are buying is a US sales tax service priced for small and mid-sized online sellers. TaxCloud tracks economic nexus, registers states, calculates tax at checkout on its Premium plan, and files and remits returns across the US. It is one of five Certified Service Providers that the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board lists as offering free services (checked 10 October 2026), so eligible remote sellers pay nothing to register or file in 24 member states. Every subscription and filing tier is published: Starter from $19 a month, Premium from $79 a month, and returns from $39 each down to $20 at volume.
The catch is assurance and reach. TaxCloud's public security page names no SOC 1 or SOC 2 report and says it offers no SLA (checked 10 October 2026). Its terms make the customer responsible for returns being filed on time and accurately, and cap TaxCloud's liability at the lesser of 30 days of fees or $1,000. The connector list is short: NetSuite, Xero and Zoho Books are marked coming soon, and the Shopify and Stripe connectors import orders while Shopify Tax or Stripe Tax does the calculating. Coverage is the US, plus Canada through Shopify and the custom API. No first-party MCP server reaches account data.
Before signing, get five things in writing. First, whether a SOC 1 or SOC 2 Type 2 report exists and can be shared under NDA. Second, your order tier and how API calls count, since each calculation or address check counts as a tenth of an order and an exempt order counts as two. Third, which of your states qualify for free SST filing given your physical presence, plus the Colorado and Louisiana surcharges. Fourth, who pays penalties and interest when a return is late or wrong, because a help center article says customers are indemnified for data or filing errors and the terms of service say the customer is responsible. Fifth, how to export reports before cancelling, because report access ends the day the account closes.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
One SST registration covers all 24 member states, and TaxCloud files and remits there monthly at no charge when the seller has no physical presence in the state. Those returns sit outside the paid filing allotment. A seller with a warehouse or office in an SST state pays the standard per-return price for that state.
On Starter, TaxCloud imports orders from Shopify, Stripe or WooCommerce, tracks nexus and prepares return-ready reports while the platform's own tax engine sets the rate at checkout. Add a filing plan and TaxCloud files and remits. Marketplace orders that reach Shopify from Amazon, Etsy or Walmart are captured for nexus tracking.
Premium turns on real-time calculation for BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Adobe Commerce, Magento, Miva, Odoo, Chargebee, QuickBooks Online and Desktop, and the custom API. Products map to Taxability Information Codes, and each calculation call counts as a tenth of an order. NetSuite and Xero connectors are marked coming soon.
Nexus monitoring across all 50 states is included in both plans and recalculates daily, per TaxCloud. When a threshold is crossed, TaxCloud prepares and files the registration, with most approvals in 7 to 21 business days. Registration in the 24 SST states is free for eligible remote sellers.
The add-on covers up to 12 amended returns and 8 hours of reconciliation help for direct-filing states, then $200 an hour. In SST states TaxCloud acts as the point of contact unless the seller has a physical presence there. It excludes audit advice, defense strategy, power of attorney and use tax on purchases.
TaxCloud does not charge for extra users and offers multi-account login so a bookkeeper or CPA can switch between client accounts. An Accountant Partner Program and a self-paced Sales Tax Bootcamp course, first published 29 May 2026, sit alongside it. The accountant page describes dedicated onboarding with three calls and email support.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Data-import plan for Shopify, Stripe, WooCommerce and CSV: nexus monitoring, return-ready reports, SST access, phone and email support. 100 to 20,000 orders a month; annual billing $199 to $3,499 for 1,200 to 240,000 orders (published, checked 10 October 2026).
Adds real-time calculation, API access, ERP and cart connectors and chat support. 200 to 40,000 orders a month; annual billing $799 to $12,999 for 2,400 to 480,000 orders. Larger volumes go to sales.
Billed after each return is filed when no filing plan is active. A zero-dollar return counts as a filing.
Annual plans run $399 for 12 returns to $11,999 for 600, as low as $20 a return. Overage bills at the tier's per-return rate; unused filings do not roll over.
Free registration, filing and remittance for remote sellers with no physical presence in the state. These returns sit outside the filing allotment; a paid subscription is still required. The pricing page and help center list SST access on Starter, while the SST page FAQ says SST benefits need Premium (all read 11 October 2026), so confirm the plan in writing.
Charged in arrears on top of the filing plan or per-return price. The Colorado retail delivery fee return is a separate $39 filing.
TaxCloud prepares and files the application; it says most approvals arrive in 7 to 21 business days. Louisiana parish registrations are not supported.
Up to 12 amended returns and 8 hours of help for direct-filing states, then $200 an hour. Audit advice, defense strategy and power of attorney are excluded.
7 percent on card payments, $100 for a failed tax remittance, $50 for a failed service payment, $39 per state when SST funds cannot be pulled, and 1.5 percent a month on late balances.
One-to-one guided onboarding, a dedicated customer success manager, state mail handling and voluntary disclosure work are sold as additional services with no published price.
Premium features, including the API, with no card required. The trial excludes filing and state registration.
The terms of service (last updated March 2025, read 10 October 2026) make the customer responsible for returns being completed on time and accurately, including confirming that the state accepted each one. Total liability is capped at the fees received in the 30 days before the claim or $1,000, whichever is less. A help center article says customers are indemnified for any data or filing errors, which reads differently. The authorization form adds that a seller's rights and obligations toward SST member states are set by each state's law. Ask for the penalty and interest position in the order form.
TaxCloud's security practices page (read 10 October 2026) describes Microsoft Azure hosting, enforced TLS, daily backups and PCI-compliant payment partners. It names no SOC 1 or SOC 2 report, and neither do the legal, API or pricing pages. On uptime it says TaxCloud does not offer an SLA and that its hosting partners guarantee 99.9 percent. A sales tax engine feeds the tax payable balance, so ask whether a SOC 1 Type 2 or SOC 2 Type 2 report exists before your auditors do.
The pricing FAQ (read 10 October 2026) says every calculation or address verification counts as a tenth of an order, even when no sale follows, and that calls from SST states and test stores count. A help article says a cart may send 3 to 5 API calls per completed transaction. An order with an exemption certificate counts as two. Overage bills at the tier's per-order price and the plan does not upgrade on its own, so size the tier on API traffic as well as orders.
TaxCloud's filing article (read 10 October 2026) adds a $60 surcharge for each Colorado filing and $30 for each Louisiana filing, on top of the plan. Zero-dollar returns count as filings and unused filings do not roll over. The pricing FAQ says card payments incur a 7 percent convenience fee, and the fee schedule applies 7 percent when tax funds are paid by credit card, so fund remittance by ACH. A failed payment costs $50 for service fees, $100 for a tax remittance and $39 per state when SST funds cannot be pulled.
The integrations page (read 10 October 2026) lists 12 platform cards plus a custom API and CSV upload, with NetSuite, Xero and Zoho Books marked coming soon and no Sage Intacct or Business Central card. The Shopify and Stripe connectors import orders for reporting and filing, and calculation stays with Shopify Tax or Stripe Tax. The QuickBooks Online connector needs a browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave or Vivaldi. Amazon, Etsy and Walmart orders reach TaxCloud through Shopify or a CSV.
The cancellation article (read 10 October 2026) says a cancelled account immediately loses access to TaxCloud reports and that data may not be preserved. The terms add that TaxCloud is not a system of record, is not obligated to provide copies of the information it stores, and that a customer who needs a copy of a return must ask the state. Fees are billed in advance and are non-refundable, and terms auto-renew. Export transaction and jurisdiction reports for every period before closing the account.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: TaxCloud publishes no MCP server for customer account data. A search of the official MCP registry on 11 October 2026 returned no TaxCloud entry, and TaxCloud's GitHub organization (FedTax) lists no MCP repository. Two documentation endpoints do exist. The developer docs advertise one at docs.taxcloud.com/_mcp/server, generated by the documentation platform; it answered an MCP initialize call on 11 October 2026 and listed one tool, searchDocs. The help center lists a second at support.taxcloud.com/mcp, which listed seven tools for searching and reading help articles and API reference entries.
Scope: The docs MCP is read-only and searches documentation pages; it cannot see or change a TaxCloud account. For real work the surface is the REST API v3, which has an OpenAPI 3.0 spec. The Sales Tax API creates carts for tax quotes, creates, updates, voids and refunds orders, manages exemption certificates, verifies addresses and runs a TIC search. A Management API handles API keys, accounts and a product catalog. The reference lists no endpoints for filings, filing status, nexus thresholds or state reports.
Turnkey: Nothing is turnkey for an agent that needs account data. A developer has to wrap an API key and a connection ID in a custom tool, and API access needs the Premium plan. TaxCloud's GitHub organization (FedTax) published a taxcloud-agent-skills repository on 24 September 2026 with three skills that teach coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor and Codex to build API v3 integrations, map tax codes and migrate from the v1 API; they guide the build and do not connect to an account. Each calculation or address check counts as a tenth of an order toward the plan, in every state, and the pricing FAQ says calls sent from a test store count too. There is no separate sandbox host; the docs tell developers to create a test connection on the production API.
In-product AI: TaxCloud's 2025 review post says its AI is intentionally scoped, assisting with repetitive tasks inside filing workflows in limited cases under human oversight. The developer docs say TIC Search uses a semantic search model to rank tax codes for a product description. TaxCloud publishes no accuracy figure for either, so treat a suggested code as a first pass for a person to confirm.
WordPress.org shows TaxCloud for WooCommerce at version 8.4.20, last updated 8 October 2026, with 500+ active installs.
A product post updated 10 June 2026 says TaxCloud for Stripe is available on Starter and Premium. Stripe Tax calculates, and TaxCloud syncs invoices, credit notes, refunds and checkout sessions for nexus tracking and filing.
TaxCloud's course page, first published 29 May 2026, describes a self-paced four-chapter program for bookkeepers and CPAs built around its platform.
TaxCloud announced a rebuilt CSV upload with a template, real-time validation, automatic fixes for common formatting issues and a per-row view of what succeeded or failed.
TaxCloud's year-end post says it launched native Chargebee support and an Accountant Partner Program, passed 1,000 Shopify installs and doubled its onboarding and support teams. These are the vendor's own figures.
TaxCloud's Canada page, first published 23 December 2025, covers GST/HST and provincial taxes through Shopify and custom API integrations. Registration and threshold management are marked coming soon.
Subscription prices are published. Starter runs from $19 a month at 100 orders to $349 at 20,000, and Premium from $79 a month at 200 orders to $1,299 at 40,000. Annual billing saves up to 16 percent, starting at $199 a year for Starter and $799 for Premium (published, checked 10 October 2026).
Filing is separate. Each return costs $39 pay as you go, or less on a filing plan, down to $20 on the 600-return annual plan. Eligible remote sellers file free in the 24 Streamlined Sales Tax states. Colorado adds $60 and Louisiana $30 per filing, and registration in a non-SST state is $249.
Audit Friendly estimate: a Shopify seller with 1,000 orders a month that files monthly in 10 non-SST states pays about $408 a month on monthly plans ($89 for Starter plus $319 for 10 returns), or $4,398 a year on annual plans. A Premium seller at the same volume pays about $618 a month. No public Vendr or SpendHound benchmark for TaxCloud was found as of 11 October 2026.
Plans are monthly or annual and renew automatically for the same term. Fees are billed in advance and are non-refundable, and TaxCloud may raise prices at renewal with notice by email or on its website. If the order form is silent, cancellation takes at least 30 days' written notice and takes effect at the end of the current term (terms of service, read 10 October 2026).
Export before you leave. The help center says a cancelled account immediately loses access to reports and that data may not be preserved. The terms say TaxCloud is not a system of record and is not obligated to provide copies of what it stores; for a copy of a filed return, the customer must ask the state.
If TaxCloud is filing for you, it files the data received in your last month of service. Its own guidance is to close the account on the first day of the following month so the full month is filed. Your SST registration stays active after you leave, so line up the next filer first.
TaxCloud says most businesses complete onboarding within a few days and that ERP or custom API setups can take several weeks or months (checked 10 October 2026). A 30-day Premium trial needs no card, though it excludes filing and registration. One customer story, Rareform, puts its move from Avalara at under two weeks.
Self-serve setup is free. One-to-one guided onboarding, where a specialist validates data flows, maps tax codes and coordinates with the prior provider, is a paid add-on with no published price. New registrations take 7 to 21 business days per state.
Plan for one review in the first cycle. Reports are ready on the 3rd of the month and finalized on the 11th, and TaxCloud asks customers to check transactions and exempt sales in that window before it files.
Only through custom code. TaxCloud has no first-party MCP server for account data: the official MCP registry lists none, and its two MCP endpoints, one in the developer docs and one in the help center, only search and read documentation (checked 11 October 2026).
A developer can wrap the REST API v3 in a tool. With a Premium API key and connection ID, an agent can quote tax on a cart, create, update, void or refund orders, manage exemption certificate records and search for tax codes. Each calculation counts as a tenth of an order toward the plan.
Filing, nexus and reporting stay in the dashboard. The API reference lists no endpoints for enabling filing, checking filing status, reading nexus thresholds or downloading state reports.
