TaxJar is Stripe's US-only sales tax tool for small and mid-sized online sellers: it pulls orders from carts and marketplaces, tracks economic nexus, calculates rates by API and files state returns through AutoFile.
Independently scored, one dimension at a time. Every dimension is sourced, and we say whether a claim is published, reported, or estimated.
TaxJar's support site publishes monthly and annual prices for all 34 tiers across both plans, AutoFile per-return fees and bundles, the $299 registration fee, $65 overdue returns and data backfill prices (checked 4 October 2026). Flex fees for busy months are explained with worked examples. The catch is the 2026 increase: the pricing page does not mention it, and the explanation sits in a support FAQ.
A 30-day trial imports the last 60 days of sales with no card required, and TaxJar's QuickBooks page says most customers go live within 7 days. Professional onboarding includes a personalized plan and a free two-year backfill, though technical calls and test accounts are limited to custom API, WooCommerce and Magento 2 setups. AutoFile enrollment and state registrations add state-by-state paperwork on top.
TaxJar builds its own connectors for Amazon, Shopify, Etsy, eBay, Walmart, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, Square, PayPal and QuickBooks Online, with certified partner connectors for Chargebee and others (integrations page, checked 4 October 2026). New NetSuite integrations are not supported (article updated 2 May 2025), new Xero connections ended in August 2022 and the Stripe integrations are existing-users only. Starter allows 3 data import integrations and Professional 10.
Published tiers run from 200 to 10 million orders a month, and Professional allows 10,000 API calls a minute per the API reference. Professional caps an account at 10 team users and 10 integrations, and content is US-only. Each separately filing entity needs its own TaxJar account (support article updated 1 July 2024), and users switch between accounts.
TaxJar's security page lists SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and Cloud Security Alliance, with no SOC 1 report named (checked 4 October 2026). The accuracy guarantee pays tax, penalties and interest from a wrong API result up to 2 times the fees paid in the prior 12 months, and the filing guarantee covers late-filing penalties. Roles are only Administrator and Member, and AutoFile submits without an approval step: a reviewer gets about two days after the 1st of the due month to pause a return before the data locks.
TaxJar covers US sales tax only with rooftop-level rates; its homepage cites 11,000 jurisdictions and its QuickBooks page more than 14,000 (both checked 4 October 2026). It does not offer international calculations to new customers (support article updated 30 September 2025) and its NetSuite guide says it does not calculate use tax. AutoFile skips Alaska, Colorado home-rule cities, the Colorado retail delivery fee and Louisiana parish returns for standard licenses.
TaxJar's SLA article promises email replies within two business days on Starter and one on Professional, 8AM to 7PM Central on weekdays, with phone callbacks only from the Professional 1K tier. Professional adds an Onboarding Specialist, and a Customer Success Manager at higher tiers. The Shopify App Store shows 2.6 out of 5 from 76 reviews, with 36 percent one-star (checked 4 October 2026).
No first-party MCP server appears in the official MCP registry, TaxJar's GitHub or its docs (checked 4 October 2026); the only TaxJar MCP is CData's third-party server, read-only in its open-source form. The v2 REST API covers calculations, orders, refunds, exempt customers, nexus regions and address validation, but has no filing or report endpoints, and its changelog's last entry is January 2022. The pricing page lists AI-driven product taxability recommendations, with no accuracy figure published.

What you are buying is a US sales tax workflow built around online orders. TaxJar imports sales from Shopify, Amazon, Etsy, WooCommerce, QuickBooks Online and other channels, shows liability by state and local jurisdiction, alerts Professional users as they near economic nexus, and files returns in every state except Alaska through AutoFile. Stripe has owned it since 2021 and still sells it as a separate product from Stripe Tax. Stripe Tax itself files its customers' US returns through TaxJar.
The catch is scope and direction. TaxJar covers US sales tax only: no international calculations for new customers, no use tax calculation, and AutoFile skips Colorado home-rule cities, the Colorado retail delivery fee and Louisiana parish returns for standard licenses. New NetSuite and Xero connections are closed. Its first price change in over six years took effect on 1 October 2026, and TaxCloud, a competitor, reports that annual customers move at renewal. The Shopify app sits at 2.6 out of 5 (checked 4 October 2026).
Before signing, get four things in writing: your order tier and how API calls count toward it (a tenth of an order per calculation on Professional), the AutoFile price per return and whether a prepaid bundle fits your filing calendar, which of your state and local returns AutoFile will not file, and how you will export reports and transactions, because report access ends the day the account is cancelled.
Jobs, mapped to how finance teams actually buy.
AutoFile turns imported orders into state returns and remits payment from your bank account, in every state except Alaska. TaxJar guarantees on-time submission and pays late-filing penalties and interest if it misses. Starter includes 2 free credits a year and Professional 4.
The Economic Nexus Insights dashboard on Professional tracks sales by state against each threshold and alerts you as you approach one. TaxJar tells Starter users to monitor thresholds with another provider. Prior years beyond the free backfill cost $25 to $450 a year depending on tier.
The TaxJar API returns rates by street address and product tax code for WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce and custom carts. TaxJar claims sub-20ms responses and 99.999 percent historical uptime. API access requires Professional, and each calculation counts as a tenth of an order toward your tier.
Paid-plan customers fill in one form and TaxJar submits the state permit application within 30 days. It covers nexus from sales and Amazon FBA inventory, but not nexus from employees or other inventory storage. State registration fees are extra.
TaxJar imports orders from Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Walmart, Shopify, PayPal and other channels and breaks liability down by state, county, city and special district. Sales where a marketplace collected the tax can be flagged so they are not counted twice. Professional adds XLS export of state reports.

Here's what it really costs: published rates where a vendor lists them, aggregated quote data where they don't, plus a path to your own number.
Priced in steps from 200 to 10 million orders a month (published 4 October 2026): $39/mo at 200 orders, $99 at 1,000, $429 at 10K. Annual billing from $419/yr.
Same order steps with more features (published 4 October 2026): $99/mo at 200 orders, $499 at 1,000, $1,999 at 10K. Annual billing from $1,069/yr.
Per return filed beyond the free credits included in each plan.
Prepaid return bundles of 25, 50, 100 or unlimited returns; Starter pricing shown first, Professional slightly higher (published).
Paid plans only; TaxJar submits within 30 days. State fees are extra.
For past periods in AutoFile states, on request after enrollment. No penalty waiver requests.
Priced by order tier. Professional onboarding includes a free two-year backfill.
Included in the subscription.
TaxJar says it charges no implementation, sandbox, support or setup fees.
TaxJar's pricing FAQ (updated 1 October 2026) says new pricing took effect that day and that anyone who signed up after 26 February 2026 already pays it. TaxCloud, a competitor, reports the Professional annual price at 2,500 orders rising from $5,389 to $11,999 and the Professional AutoFile fee from $35 to $55 a return. TaxCloud also reports that annual customers move at renewal, so get a written renewal quote early.
TaxJar's support article (updated 2 May 2025) says it does not support new NetSuite integrations, and its NetSuite guide says the connector is for existing users only. New Xero connections ended on 30 August 2022, and the Stripe integrations are also existing-users only. An ERP-led company should plan on the API, a certified partner connector or a different engine.
TaxJar does not offer international calculations to new customers (support article updated 30 September 2025) and points them to Stripe Tax. Its NetSuite guide says it calculates sales tax and does not calculate use tax. AutoFile skips Alaska, Colorado home-rule cities and the Colorado retail delivery fee return, and for standard Louisiana licenses it files the state return and leaves parish returns to you.
TaxJar's cancellation article (updated 1 April 2026) says you lose access to reports immediately and that data is not guaranteed to be kept for cancelled or inactive accounts. AutoFile enrollments are cancelled with the account, flex fees are billed on the way out, and Professional accounts cancel through support. Export state reports and transaction files, and keep copies of filed returns, before you give notice.
On Professional, the order count combines imported transactions with API calculations at a tenth of an order per call. A month over your tier bills a flex fee equal to the gap between tiers: TaxJar's own examples are $250 for a Professional 500 plan that hits 750 orders and $5,000 for a 250K plan that hits 350K. Size the tier for peak season or budget for the fee.
Professional customers can upload PDF certificates, but only for customers created through the API or an API-powered integration such as WooCommerce or Magento (support article updated 15 July 2024). TaxJar does not notify you when a certificate expires, and deleting or replacing one takes a support request. Sellers with many exempt customers will likely want a dedicated certificate tool.
Scored on what an outside agent can actually reach: the documented API, how it authenticates, and whether the vendor ships an MCP server.
Exists: TaxJar publishes no MCP server of its own. Searches of the official MCP registry, TaxJar's GitHub organization and its developer docs on 4 October 2026 found none. The one TaxJar MCP in public listings comes from CData and needs CData's licensed JDBC driver. Stripe's hosted MCP server covers the Stripe API, while TaxJar runs its own separate API at api.taxjar.com.
Scope: CData's open-source server is read-only by its own README; CData sells a separate version with write access. Underneath, TaxJar's v2 REST API can calculate tax, create, update and delete order and refund transactions, manage exempt customers, list nexus regions and validate addresses. It has no endpoints for AutoFile enrollment, filing status or state reports.
Turnkey: Nothing is turnkey for an agent. A developer has to wrap the API token in a custom tool or install CData's driver. API access needs the Professional plan, and each calculation call counts as a tenth of an order toward the monthly tier, so an agent calling it in a loop has a cost.
In-product AI: the pricing page lists AI-driven product taxability recommendations, and the API page says the classification tool suggests a product tax code for each product. TaxJar publishes no accuracy figure for it, so treat the suggestions as a first pass for a person to confirm.
TaxJar's pricing FAQ says its first price update in over six years went into effect on 1 October 2026 and points existing customers to their Plans and Billing page for when it applies to them.
Updated terms took effect for new users on 14 May 2026 and existing users on 13 June 2026, covering TaxJar services bought through Stripe and adding an online DPA.
TaxJar's pricing FAQ says pricing is unchanged for anyone who signed up after 26 February 2026, and archived copies of its pricing article show Starter rising from $19 to $39 a month between 11 February and 11 March 2026; Professional still starts at $99.
Brink Commerce released a TaxJar connector for real-time US tax at checkout and automatic transaction reporting on delivery, built on the TaxJar API.
TaxJar's support article, last updated 2 May 2025, says it does not support new NetSuite integrations; existing NetSuite users keep the SuiteApp.
Subscription prices are published. Starter runs from $39 a month at 200 orders to $19,999 a month at 10 million; Professional runs from $99 to $49,999 a month across the same tiers. Annual billing saves 10 percent or more (published, checked 4 October 2026).
Filing is extra. AutoFile costs $50 a return on Starter and $55 on Professional after 2 or 4 free credits a year, with prepaid bundles for annual subscribers. TaxJar's own worked example puts a Professional 1K seller filing monthly in three states, plus one $299 registration, at $908 for the month before sales tax.
Vendr reports a median TaxJar contract of $24,423 a year (checked 4 October 2026). Its page still cites the old $19 Starter price, so treat that median as mostly pre-2026 pricing.
Plans run month to month or annually, and you can change tier at any time. A month over your tier adds a one-off flex fee equal to the gap between tiers. AutoFile credits and bundles are non-refundable, and the unlimited bundle of 540 credits expires a year after purchase.
Export before you cancel. Professional users can export each state report as XLS, and users can request CSV exports of transactions. TaxJar says report access ends the moment an account is cancelled and that it does not guarantee data is kept for cancelled or inactive accounts. AutoFile enrollments end with the account, and Professional accounts cancel through support.
TaxJar says most customers are live within 7 days. A trial imports the last 60 days of sales from connected channels, and a paid plan pulls history back to the start of the year, or the prior year if you upgrade between January and March.
Your team does the setup. Professional includes an Onboarding Specialist, a personalized plan and a free two-year backfill for nexus analysis, but technical calls, test accounts and go-live reviews are offered only for custom API, WooCommerce and Magento 2 integrations. AutoFile then needs state tax IDs, filing frequencies and bank details, and the registration service submits new state permits within 30 days for $299 each.
Only through the API today. TaxJar has no first-party MCP server, and the one TaxJar MCP in public listings is a third-party server from CData that needs CData's licensed JDBC driver; its open-source version is read-only.
With a TaxJar API token wired into a custom tool, an agent can calculate tax for an order, create, update or delete order and refund transactions, manage exempt customers, list nexus regions and validate addresses. It cannot enroll states in AutoFile, read filing history or pull state reports, because the API has no endpoints for them. On Professional each calculation counts as a tenth of an order toward your tier, so agent traffic has a cost.
